Halo MCC dedicated servers: Where art thou??

No, in Titanfall YOU choose the datacenter. 99.9% of the games are against people in your region. With almost non existent lag/latency problems.

I don't think you know how this works. In Titanfall it isn't 99.9%, it's 100%. When you are connected to let's say EU-W - there is no technical possibility to play against someone who is logged in to another datacenter. If at the start-up Halo 5 checks the pings to all of the datacenters and EU-W is the best one for your - then you will be logged in there and you can only play against other players logged-in on the same datacenter.

I really get the feeling the halo community is gonna dip their toes into 5, not barrel in, after MCC
Gamers aren't known for their restraint. 343 could release a bullshot trailer today and the inevitable GAF thread would be filled with 10 pages worth of "day 1" posts.

I remember one of the titanfall updates adding the ability to find matches outside your region if the population was low, so something happens if needs be.

But Titanfall, while player positioning can be a little choppy sometimes has always given me rather good ping playing on the EU servers and I love it, compared to say playing Garden Warfare where the game feels smooth but sometimes it takes a second for someone to die after being blown up.

Its sad that bullshot trailer used to mean made up or exaggerated graphics.

Now to mean it means "a trailer for a game that shows its working but broken upon release"

Yep. If "dipping their toes in" means "buying the game", them I'm sure Microsoft won't mind. They've won as soon as they have your cash, regardless of your opinion once you start playing.

I know very well how titanfall works... But, there is nothing stopping someone from another region playing on datacenter where i am playing. That is why I said 99.9%.

Please, if your interpretation of his tweet is accurate, then I will be happy. Also, sorry if it seemed like I was shooting the messenger.

Man I hope what you wrote is going to be how it goes down on halo 5.

I am one of the folks that bought an Xbox One just for this. "Regret" doesn't even begin to cover it. Ten years and two generations later, the game and system lacks most of the functionality of the original. That is nothing short of disgusting.

I almost bought an X1 just for the MCC. I was seriously considering it, but I hesitated just to hear final reviews and opinions before I pulled the trigger. Thank Gaben I did. I would be sorely pissed and disappointed had I bought an X1 with MCC.

I have never been so disappointed in a gaming product. It is an absolute disgrace what has happened with MCC. For all the debates leading up to the release- what version of CE, would glitches be in or out, etc.- I never imagined that matchmaking itself would be so fundamentally broken. Even teams? Fast search times? Basic functionality like moving your party from playlist to playlist, or backing out of a playlist together if you decide on something else? Completely, astonishingly, absent. Custom games are, with a truckload of patience, serviceable. "Serviceable" is a term I would have never used to describe Halo's matchmaking in the past.

I'm also in the boat of having bought the console exclusively for this game. I've never, ever, been this upset over a purchase.

It's astonishing to me that Microsoft allowed a game to come out like this and hasn't issued a statement or done something to try to soften the blow. There should've been an official refund program available for both physical and digital copies at the very least. Instead, they've stayed silent and even continued to advertise and promote a broken product. It's borderline fraud, and it shows just how little they care about their customers.

I've owned an Xbox and Halo since the originals. I beta tested the original Xbox Live service in 2002. But I'm done now.

Out of all the games that have come out broken this year, every company has at least said "this is what we are doing to make up for our mistake"

343 has not.

I don't now if it's there place to say anything, they have to clear it with MS i'm sure. But it is surprising that neither has really said much of anything other than 343 saying they are 'working on it'.

They have said "we know we owe you".

But yeah, the actual compensation is likely to depend on just how much damage they will estimate had been done by this mess.

What really annoys me, though, is seeing all those vidocs and E3 promises again, and to read some reviews gushing about how lovingly put together and polished the package is. I don't even know how someone could reach that conclusion even if the matchmaking was perfect.

A few anniversary maps for free would be cool. But I'll take 100% dedicated servers as a first choice... What should've been there from day one.

There is no way that 343 gets this game fixed before they all jump for the holidays. This compensation that was talked about better be worth it. Free Map Packs for the rest of the Halo 2 levels, Free Halo 5 (or 75% off in the Xbox Live Store) for those affected, Free Games. Something, because this is insane.

Agreed. This game won't even be 75% fixed either.

Not totally related but it's weird. I know my NAT is open. I turn my console on and its open. I can play the game with little to no problems now. I take the wire out of the console for any amount of time my NAT goes to strict and I literally can't join any game.I just sit at connecting. I noticed this before too. Why does the NAT change like that? Is it a console error? Kinda stupid.

How do we even know they'll be going home for the holidays? They already had to work on Thanksgiving; Christmas wouldn't surprise me at this point.

That's weird. My NAT has been Open but over the weekend it changed to Moderate. I think that was more due to actual Live issues though that were going on. I did a hard reset, unplugged my modem and router, and when I booted back up, it was Open again. I'm going to keep monitoring as well to see if/when it changes. Opening ports on routers has never been my thing and I hope it doesn't resort to that.

Edit: thanks for that link, dwells. Really helpful. So basically doing a hard reset (which I've been prone to doing with all the MCC updates) fixes the NAT issue until it may come up again due to instant on/inactivity with the ports?

Hello everyone! Just returned from a 1 month ban for "being a hostile jerk" in one of the Halo MCC threads shortly after the game came out.

I was being a "hostile jerk" to the apologists who were okay with the official explanation that p2p is fine as a fallback.

Well guess what? We're now over a month after the release of Halo MCC and I too have maybe only seen the "connecting to dedicated servers" notification once during my entire play time. The vast majority of the time I see users with yellow/red ping.

So is it really okay that a game promises dedicated servers at launch, when those dedicated servers are only working less than 10% of the time (and I'm being generous with that estimate)? Is it really okay that this game is not transparent about this at all?

I apologize for being so "hostile" about this, but I guess everyone else is okay with consistently getting screwed by the big publishers/devs.

^^^ Dang bro you're salty.

Is this game still broken?
Define broken. It works, but it works so infrequently it's incredibly frustrating. I've still logged in over 60 mp matches and haven't had any issues with the campaigns, but it's frustrating not having access to certain playlists (I can't do BTB, it doesn't ever match me) while other playlists (SWAT) work perfectly and I get into a game with ~1 min matchmaking.

Ok, I don't understand this.

Hasn't the "Cloud" been explained as also implying basically (virtual) dedicated servers for every single big 1st party game (and some high profile 3rd party ones, like TF)?

I mean...

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2...one-cloud-message-shifts-to-dedicated-servers

Now Titanfall has released, the power of the cloud seems to have been something of a damp squib. It seems the cloud, in the short term at least, is about dedicated servers and how they make multiplayer gaming more seamless.

And that - finally - is how Microsoft is now referring to the cloud.

"You picked up on exactly that," Phil Harrison told me at E3 last week.

"Xbox Live is the service. Dedicated servers is the benefit. That is the reason why these games are going to be better, why the experience for multiplayer is going to be better.

"And we're being clear, hopefully around all of the games that will take advantage of it, whether it is a game like Forza Horizon 2, or whether it's Halo: The Master Chief Collection, particularly the Halo 5: Guardians multiplayer beta."

So what does this mean for Xbox One games? Dedicated servers was mentioned in relation to a raft of upcoming Xbox One exclusives, including racing game Forza Horizon 2, from UK studio Playground Games, Insomniac Games' Sunset Overdrive with its eight-player multiplayer, Halo: The Master Chief Collection's nostalgia-fuelled multiplayer, Lionhead's Fable: Legends with its four versus one multiplayer, and Crackdown, from Dave Jones and his mystery team, which features open world co-op.

Am I dreaming this?

I did the same and just bailed. Really is a shame because I was beyond hyped for this game.

Same for me as well. Based on anecdotal evidence from some of the conversations that I've had with randoms in MCC a lot of people did this. I'm not going to argue that this was ill advised on my (our) part, because obviously it was. That being said, I can't help but feel a little bit scammed by the promises that this game made before launch (Halo MCC vidoc anyone?). Also the level at which they knowingly misled the public by giving certain outlets and twitch streamers early access to customs, which led everyone into thinking that the game was working fine.

At this point the only reason why I haven't processed a refund is because I'm holding on to the hope that Halo 5 might actually be good. Although all evidence thus far points to the contrary. Right now Halo 5 looks like the culmination of shoddy "big-data" analysis and over reliance on focus groups. Seriously, Microsoft needs to fire whatever companies are doing informatics/stats work for them because they are destroying the Xbox brand.

You're not dreaming.. It is just that some studios are capable of getting games working on azure and others aren't..

I think 343 need to speak to respawn to see how its done.

Sure thing. The other option is to do the LT+RT+LB+RB trick in the network test that's mentioned in that thread. You'll likely have to do it a couple times. This is a bit quicker than doing the hard reset all the time.

Note than even if your NAT shows up as "Open," it's not necessarily true. The Xbox caches and continues to display the initial status, regardless of whether or not is has an active lease on port 3074 like it's supposed to.

I've got my Xbox in the routers DMZ. Seems to be OK for me.

lmao I literally can't

I dont expect it, look in the brackets. I'm just spitballing ideas which show that it is unacceptable for them to treat Halo Fans with a broken product like this. This is the first ever Halo Game to be released in a state which is literally barely playable. We can't allow that precident to continue and asking for a heavy compensation is a good deterent, even if you dont get it.

Well, yeah, that'll do it. But using the DMZ as a means of dealing with connectivity issues is generally bad practice, even if it is just a gaming console.

Why is that? I tried forwarding all the ports and it stayed strict. DMZ was the only thing that worked.

Putting something in the DMZ means it's 100% exposed to the internet and not behind your router's firewall. Assuming a closed, secure platform like a gaming console, it's not necessarily a huge issue. But if another device on your network were somehow to wind up with the same IP as the one specified for the DMZ, that device (say a laptop) would now be fully exposed. Also, with the Xbox running a version Windows now, I do worry about the possibility of zero day vulnerabilities from desktop Windows affecting the Xbox as well - after al, you do keep log in and credit card info on there.

Got it. But doing the LT+RT+LB+RB or the hard reset will more than likely move it to Open despite what it displays, as you said above?

How is this, and other games like this, not a lawsuit or a demand for a return?

It seems crazy that a game that was surely a guaranteed hit is so broken

I hope they the servers back on this month. I only played on Dedicated Servers on launch night. You would get a message once the Lobby filled up saying "Connecting to a Dedicated Server." I know it wasn't removed as a result of a patch, because the first Update wasn't released until the following week. And every day leading up to that I was unable to connect to a Dedicated Server.

Huh, that's weird. They were out there pounding their chest about dedicated servers for the longest time. Thought for sure that was at least working, and just matchmaking was jacked up.

Me too. I thought I left the walled console garden and ridiculous practice of paid multiplayer for good a few years ago but the nostalgia and promise of dedicated servers and 60 FPS Halo was too strong.

Console + Live Subscription + Digital Version of the game = I feel like an idiot.

1. Because the AAA publishers have lawyers. Lots of em. Expensive lawyers too!
2. If you bought the game digitally, you can get a return from microsoft. Although it's not clear if you must process that return within a certain time period.
3. As part of the XBL terms of service you sign away your rights to any class action lawsuit against them (which is honestly bullshit in my opinion).

Basically consumer protection laws have not caught up with this "new" media. The BF4 class action suit alleging insider trading amongst other things went nowhere.

I want Frankie or someone from 343i, you know, maybe the LEAD PRODUCER, Dan Ayoub, who's been hiding from the community since the problems started, to be HONEST and come out and say what the hell is going on with the dedicated servers.

I've said this a hundred times already... One of the biggest reasons I bought this collection was to finally experience a (mostly) lag free experience, and 343i has FAILED MISERABLY on delivering that.

Doing either the of those will force it to refresh and display the actual NAT setting. After two or three of the button combos or one hard reset, it'll display Open NAT. If it doesn't, there might be another network issue at play.

I hope the dedicated servers can fix the latency in Halo 2 classic. My God that thing is bad.
I'm not sure it can. Even in custom games with low ping times, the weirdness with the BR and the sniper not connecting outside short range with a moving target still persist. That's gonna require a netcode patch, which we have a slim to nil chance of seeing.

I love how Dan Ayoub went from being the face of the game, introducing it, hyping it, being on social media, etc. to being completely absent. His Twitter went dark a mere two days after the game released, and the only time his name has surfaced was when it was signed to a horrible PR-speak apology that described the issues as being "some users" with "longer than normal" matchmaking times.

How in the world can 343 Industries or Microsoft be okay with an employee behaving like that? It instills no confidence whatsoever in consumers when the previous face of the game just flat out disappears two days after the game launches and we discover what a mess it is. Makes you think that he knew this was going to happen, knows it's not getting fixed, and is just saying screw it and hiding until it all blows over.
