AC UNITY patch worsens NPC pop-in. Ubisoft actually puts in new spawning animation.

New patch actually reduced pop in significantly for me. Pre patch if you stood and watched a large crowd it was horrible as they all seemed to pop in and out constantly. Haven't seen that happen since though.

For all the shit Ubi has received this year, I think they got it right with FC4. Was on the fence for ages because I hated FC3, but took the plunge and really like it. The way the Dunia engine deals with pop in is a much more elegant solution. I wonder if a similar process is doable in this?

Who are you quoting and why should I be listening to him in particular when he says it's "worse"?

Yeah, I mean the whole thing is pretty stupid (making the popin more visible with this animation when trying to conceal it or make it look cooler), but I'm not sure what is "worse".

NPC pop-in as you run into them was already there.

It used to be the same pop-in fade like in the Crysis and Far Cry games. A sort-of pixelated effect.
GTA V has the same effect (but the draw distance is much better) so you won't notice it that much. It seems that most Ubisoft games have problems with draw distance. One could think the amount of memory in current gen consoles would allow them to improve that but Ubi programmers apparently still live in the 7th generation.

It's obviously a glitch in the animus and part of the highly cerebral storyline

I actually have the game now because I got it free. It has great potential but really, really is a bug ridden mess. Not to the point where it's unplayable, but there is no excuse for it to be this clunky

So uhhh

why didn't they dramatically reduce the number or NPCs on screen for the console versions ?That seems the obvious solution to me.

Many PC settings allow you to reduce that with the click of a button but they can't ?

Its ok Ubi..A thousand NPCs at once doesn't make for better gameplay.Unless its essential for Unity ? idk

Its the environment not the npcs

It's not as simple as reducing npc count.

This is beyond ridiculous. At which point do Ubisoft offers full refund for Unity? Or more importantly at which point people start demanding full refund?
I'm not talking free game, I'm talking money back.

they used it in previous assassin creeds

IIRC In Black Flag npcs would appear from a dust cloud of sorts

Yes, this is true. It happened in Black Flag, at least when I played it on PC. Sometimes NPC's would pop right in front of me exactly as in this Unity video, granted, I believe the animation was different.

I always chalked it up to the game catching up on data streaming of assets.

PC gamers should not have to be reduced to this rubbish.

Why just PC gamers? I don't think any paying customer deserves to receive such a poorly optimized title. Sure, some have had quite a bit of enjoyment out of the game, but I think it's fair to say that the title hasn't lived up to its potential. Then again, I think the same thing about most ubisoft games. Hopefully this debacle changes the way ubisoft treat their consumers. It would be nice if they'd stop copying and pasting so much shit from franchise to franchise, but that's never going to happen.

I mean... the game just should have been delayed to next year, like Watch_Dogs was. They didn't have to release it. But, ya know, holiday season and $$$$$ and all that.

Yup. The sad thing is that ubisoft could have put another team or two (since they have so many) to work porting rogue to other formats to fill their annual AC quota and given this another year in the oven. But ubisoft gonna ubisoft, I guess.

I wonder how Victory will turn out.

While I agree that reducing npc population probably won't improve framerates much, at least it might reduce the chances of that gif happening and other random spawn issues.

You turn a corner and there are already lots of npcs standing around. They're probably guaranteed to be there. Then you run forward and that's when 2-3 additional npcs will just appear out of thin air. That part that adds npcs dynamically is the issue.

Whatever the engine is trying to do when it spawns that extra 2-3 npcs in an pre-existing crowd of 50, it's obviously struggling or just very bad at it. Either make it stop, or reduce the npc population by a bit so that system has more available resources and can spawn them sooner (aka further away from your character).

Because the NPCs aren't the issue, the pop-in shown in the OP seems to be a pretty rare occurrence and the patch reduced the amount of pop-in of NPCs in crowds (Which was probably more of a FPS drain given it meant it was constantly loading in new NPCs while the player was near big crowds...)
It might help a little, but odds are the NPCs are already pretty well optimised and the bigger framerate hits are coming from something else.

Have they patched the God ray thingy, thought it was still ongoing?

I mean that the last patch from them basically disabled most of the god rays! On all systems.

They're lost. I spent about 5 minutes looking for them. Way too subtle. People wanted the bugged haze near mountains gone, not this flatland.

I already finished it and was planning to come back to check out co-op and multiplayer but now I don't feel like it. It would ruin the great memories of the environment I have of this game while I played the SP campaign.

Can't wait to see what they've fucked up with AC on PC.

Of course you could render Toy Story on a PS2.

Framerate would be about one frame per hour or less, but you could do it.
You just gave me this idea for cloud gaming.... rendering a game to the point where the platform isn't stable, but recording the 4 frames per hour to be replayed via stream with previously recorded footage overlaying the actual barebones, playable version. Not sure if possible since it's a matter of timing and synchronization but it was worth the wonder. It originally spawned from thinking how they could have taken stills from your hypothetical PS2 rendered Toy Story and turned it into a film.

So instead of just these NPCs just appearing, they appear by way of teleportation!

AC: Unity is now Sci Fi....purchase redeemed!

No, I didn't buy it

Every Assassins Creed game is overtly sci-fi

I may be late here, but why on earth have a turned on my Xbox One to find a 39GB patch for ACU waiting for me. And it does this shit I assume?

I actually find the pop in more distracting than the frame dips which have never really been that severe for me. The pop in though, is constantly terrible, a shame it looks like they're not going to fix it.

Wow, really, as if bugs improved in patches is something new. To patch a behemoth like this without introducing some new problems is virtually impossible.

The arrogance of those who can only complain but probably never created something themselves which is even close to this effort is really making me sad.

So if I've never made a good post on Neogaf I shouldn't be able to complain about others' posts? Interesting...
