Nintendo software and hardware sales data from 1983 to present

And how many times have you seen any game sell 30M copies? Besides GTAV if there's any company that proves they can do it is Nintendo.

I'm not saying every Nintendo game has the potential for 70M copies sold if they went multiplatform. I'm saying that if MKWii sold 35m on Wii alone then that game would've sold way way more that that if it were on other consoles.

Hell, Mario Kart 8 would be giving any AC Unity and CoD AW a run for their money if it was multiplatform.

I'm not saying Nintendo should do it. Im realizing how much Nintendo software success I tied to Nintendo's often inability to make a home console a mainstream success.
Yes, when Nintendo systems do bad sales of Nintendo software are constrained by the low userbase however when they do great, sales of Nintendo key software are enhanced (they are by default the big must have game to buy, always in the spotlight, bundles etc.).

It's delusional to think that MKWii could have done 70M have it be on PS3/360/PC instead of Wii (or even with the Wii included).

EDIT:
GE: about 5M (NPD)

Why does Nintendo make so much Mario and Pokemon?!

I'm not saying Nintendo should but what? Are you high? You think their games sellinng more copies wouldn't translate to more money for the company?

Because they lose the royalty fee on each and every software sold, they also lose royalty fees on every 3rd party software.
And going by your logic Wiisports would have sold something like 100mil units.
To make more money on a project where they're not the platform holder they need to sell more to cover the % lost on royalty fee.
To make the operation globally they need to have their 1rst party software sell enough that the revenue they get (which is lower with the royalty fee deduced) would offset ALL the software revenue they get from all 3rd parties.
That's never happening.

The Wii u gimmick is used negatively since it never proved itself and actually affects the console negatively. Again, the Wii had decent support. Call of Duty had special versions made just for it and other next gen games got Wii versions made which is better than the Wii U has now. $249.99 is budget priced compared to its competition at $400 and $600...
1. "Yet another gimmick" implied that there's something intrinsically wrong with a gimmick. The Wii U's gimmick happened to be poorly thought out.
2. Special versions with gimped online capabilities, modes, cut DLC etc. sure. We're actually seeing that again with the Wii U. Sniper Elite V3 missing half the modes, no DLC for Wii U CODs, etc. It's only worse now because it looks like the support is drying up at an alarming rate.
3. Again, $249.99 is a hefty price to ask for something that was a modest step up from a Gamecube and had noticeable features missing compared to its competition.
The Wii sold 500 million units of 3rd party software. It had a lot of 3rd party support, just the kind that was crowed about on message boards.

Don't get me wrong, shovelware is legitimate third party support. However, the system did not receive software that defined the generation. You know what I'm talking about. The big publisher franchise. Yes, the system got "tons" of third party support, but it's always a slight against the system when it's specified what the software was (shovelware like Ubisoft's "Babyz" or whatever the fuck :p).

aonuma: (exasperated sigh) after lessons learned from zelda wii u, we understand that fans really just want lots of focus on dungeons and puzzles. so we are going back to the twilight princess method. we thought we'd revisit it to refresh our memories. or something. i don't care anymore.
Between OOT, MM and WW they've really just set a precedent for the Zelda games getting portable or improved (or both!) remakes. It's like the Pokemon remakes at this point.

TP + TP HD might not be able to beat OOT + OOT 3D

But maybe TP + TP n3DS

No god, please no. I'm enough disappointed with Xenoblade downgrade version. I really wanted to see Twilight Princess artstyle with a engine that do justice to it's asthethics. I prefer to wait for TP HD until next gen.

Would the Arkham games be nearly as big if they didn't star Batman? Not only is he recognized by everyone, he's benefited from fantastic presence in other media as well.

Batman was in a ton of crap games over the years that didn't sell nearly as well as the Arkham games (or the Lego Batman games). Licensed shovelware may be near dead on consoles, but franchises will always have a benefit over new IP unless they have tons of negative baggage.

Wii sales were good enough that even if third party games sold less than their PS360 counterparts, they sold well enough to make the ports worthwhile. In some cases, they even eventually overtook the PS360 releases, like The Force Unleashed and Tiger Woods. The Wii U has none of that going on, because month to month sales are too poor for anything to have legs.

Guitar Hero, Mario & Sonic, and Just Dance defined the generation to the extent that MS bundled a mandatory $150 motion peripheral with their new console at launch and entered into exclusive publishing deals with Ubisoft and Harmonix. Motion gaming was a huge honey pot that several companies made fat stacks of cash on.

There is no equivalent to Guitar Hero or Rock Band or Wii Sports on Wii U. Even though the Wii U has Wii Sports and Wii Fit in HD, those games aren't being sold on the strength of the Wii U pad. The Wii U doesn't sell nearly the volume of franchise staples like CoD and Madden that the Wii did. Which is why those games aren't coming any longer. The Wii launched at $250 against a $399 360 and a $599 PS3. The Wii U this fall was $299 against a $320 Xbox One and a $399 PS4 both loaded with free games. The two systems aren't really comparable at all.

Fzero X sold a million!
but damn the decline from original to GX!
Now I know why they're falling over themselves to make another one.
Wario Land did too most of the time!
I guess no more after the DS means that they wanted to improve sales after the last disappointing entry and it kinda failed :/

F-Zero GX didn't even break a million in sales? No wonder they didn't make another one after that :-(

Edit: also, why is there a "2" by Super Mario Strikers?
They made two for GBA, GP Legend and Climax. But yeah, probably F-Zero s sright now sitting in the "How can we sell millions of this" pile at Nintendo. :(

Also, nice to see Metroid there, but no Other M(or Zero Mission). I wonder why?

That is some of the craziest shit i ever read on gaf.

If it had been made obvious that it was a successor to the Wii, a console that sold more than 100 million units, would it be that crazy? Most of the public thinks the Wii U is the Wii or some variation/expansion on it to this very day.

The Wii U sold like absolute shit. 6.68 million units for a Nintendo console over two years on the market is shit. When compared, the Gamecube was doing double the numbers the Wii U was this March. Tripled and quadrupled sound extreme, but they aren't that big in this case.

Granted, quadrupled was a bit hyperbolic, but had people actually known the Wii U was the fancy new follow-up to their favorite sport and fitness simulator is it absolutely impossible to imagine it having sold 20-21m in a best-case scenario? The PS4 and Xbox One are doing crazy numbers (the PS4 sold 15m in one year), console gaming is bigger than ever before. I'm not saying changing the name to something more logical would've instantly resulted in amazing numbers like that, but I don't think saying it would have been possible is insane had the damn thing actually been seen as the next Wii from day one.

This, of course, is all if we asume the name 'Wii U' is the main problem here. I believe it is, but who knows. Maybe the Gamepad shied more people away than I think, but people loved double screens, 3D and motion controls so why would this be the gimmick to stop that trend.

If you want a more realistic expectation, not my best-case "everyone going crazy for a Wii successor" scenario, I think it would've done 12-15m this March just by not having a confusing and unmarketable name.

Look at Super Mario Bros 2 and Legend of Zelda: Adventures of link in the top 10.

Lot of weirdos on the net lately have been convincing themselves that these were really unpopular games.

Not sure if it's some sort of illuminati conspiracy but it might be.

Twilight Princess surpassed Ocarina of Time. I wonder if if TP + TP HD would surpass Oot + Oot 3D.

wrong. OoT is still ahead.

OoT N64 > Wii TP

OoT N64 + 3DS > TP Wii + GC

a TP remaster could make it pass OoT though since the difference is 2 million but it'd need to be ona better selling console (next gen)

Yes, but Maximum Velocity was before F-Zero died in a blaze of glory with GX. Legend and Climax just made sure it wouldn't wake up anymore. 10 years later and we are still waiting :(

It's honestly a shame Super Mario 3D World is handicapped by the Wii U so much. When I read the GAF reception in regards to the game (not everyone of course but a fair few people), so many people said it's a weak entry after Galaxy, but I really disagree. Galaxy is the first 3D Mario I liked, but 3D World really has its shining points. It's such a great game for local multiplayer. Fun, challenging, and hilarious because things inevitably go sour and people start messing with each other.

On the other hand, thanks to the massive Wii U handicap, Playstation Smash Bomba on the PS4 is probably going to stand a chance of outselling Super Smash Bros. for Wii U. It'll be a hollow victory, but at least people will be able to sleep peacefully at night.

Wow. If that were a picture of a black guy and used a bunch of words mocking "Ebonic" African American speech, would it be posted here?

Edit: I should clarify that I'm not accusing anyone of racism or anything. I just notice that mocking Asians seems to be accepted on a level that few other forms of race-based mockery are.

holy shit, sony's going to try their hand at that again? the game did 300k after six months on a userbase of about 26 million people. smash bros. for wii u cleared that in a week on a userbase of about 3 million people. not happening. the playstation audience doesn't care for mascots.

It shipped a million. Not that it's any consolation. It may not exactly be what I wanted, but baby steps. The Playstation audience will care as long as a great game is delivered. And many other things such as promotion, messaging, content etc. is done well.

And more importantly, I care. That's all that really matters to be honest.

That's hardly a fair comparision. Wii TP and GC TP are the same game, launched at virtually the same time (mere weeks varying a little by region), so the sales really do need to be added together. No-one reports pokemon sales seperately for two different versions of the same game, even with the minor differences, while later remakes are counted separately. It's the same deal with TP Wii and TP GC.

It's certainly not the same thing as a 13 year gap between a game and it's remake. Otherwise, we have to wait until at least 2019 to see if a similar remake is happening in the same period of time, then 3 more years to accurately compare the sales.

That's why selling Rare (especially if you look how well their titles sold on N64), shutting down NoA's authonomy and their entire western development division and dismissal of their western second parties were huge mistakes by Iwata's managament and Nintendo paid a big price for it.

Goldeneye and Perfect Dark were the offspring of FPS gaming on home consoles. Nintendo had this audience on the N64 and they decided to abandon it on the GCN. By doing it so, Microsoft grabbed these audience and we know the rest of the story.
Could someone explain to me that? I keep reading about that happening but I've never had a decent explanation about what kind of autonomy NoA had that later was stripped from them.

What happened here?

Because they lose the royalty fee on each and every software sold, they also lose royalty fees on every 3rd party software.

No. Wii Sports, like every console bundled game ever, is a different story altogether. You'll notice I didn't mention it in my post and said Mario Kart Wii.

Wii Sports was bundled with the Wii console for the first years of the console making it sell by default tons and tons to many people who wanted the console but didn't give a crap about the game. Like me.

hasnt the 3DS sold more than 50 million yet? seems like it has been standing still at 45 million for ages

Nintendo has shipped only 2.7 million 3DSs trough last three quarters because they massively overshipped during last holiday season (and sales have also slowed down yoy). That is probably why it feels that it has been around 45 million for ages.

+3.6 million units, or 9.77 million LTD by March 2015.

So far they're at 7.29 million LTD as of September 2014.
That's depressing.

If this trend continues the WiiU could end up being the worst selling Nintendo console in history with the exception of the less-than-a-year-in-stores-not-even-released-in-Europe Virtual Boy.

That's been guaranteed for a long time though.

Game and Watch did THAT well? I always thought of it as one of nintendo's failed/less successful products they still took pride in. wow

Damn none of the Advance Wars games reached the 1m treshold? RIP

the original advance wars + advance wars 2 sold less than 400,000 in the usa.

and the ds iterations did worse.

it was reliable, but it was never a big seller. probably why nintendo ended up putting the franchise on hold.

Wii Sports is pretty much the reason the Wii was sold out for more than 2 years straight.
They would have needed to put it on something as undesirable as the WiiU to dampen its effect at the time.
That's my analysis anyway and I don't think there's much you can say that could prove that Wii Sports sold console more than console sold Wiisports.
Seriously I'm personally responsible for at least 5 Wii unit being sold just with that and I'm the last guy to push people to play games when I have people over.
Heck the Japanese sales of Wiisports is pretty good indication that the game wouldn't have been anything but successful if it wasn't bundled anyway.

Mario Kart Wii was already selling like hotcake before they bundled it with the console because that bundle was already what people where buying anyway.
The bundle was even supposed to be limited and it was already at more than 20 mil by that time.
So yeah MKWii reached this height not because it was bundled like Killzone 2 since it cost something like 15bucks anyway.
We're talking about a game Gamestop is confident that they can sell you for its original price with 10 bucks discount if you want preowned..
MKWii is basically like NSMB, it sold so much because there was a demand for it and putting it on another system isn't gonna make the sales improve at all.

Huge collapse damn. Wii ds were something else.

Eh, they really deserve it, people aren't going to buy the same game 3 or 4 times in a row (ie Mario Kart DS -> Mario Kart Wii -> Mario Kart 7 -> Mario Kart 8). There's very little differentiating these titles, to give an example...

Although I wish their more unique ventures like Bayonetta 2 would sell ;_;

Our beloved Satoru Iwata programmed Balloon Fight, so he's going to keep shoehorning it into everything until he resigns. Please understand.

Also, your list is wrong. Kirby's Adventure and Ice Climber are both available.

Huh. That's what I get for checking at work. Is Kung Fu a licensing issue? I just remember a friend having the game and it seeming awesome - was it a tie in to that old tv show?

Also, I too was surprised at the success of game and watch. I was born in 83, so I guess too late to see them in the wild. Like how many old Tiger Electronics games do you see today?
