Gamecube Platformers ?

Platy

I need recomendations of cute platformers on the Gamecube !

Are any of the Spyro or Crash games good ?

I heard someone talking about that Ty the Tasmanian Tiger game ... is it any good ?

Any 2d platformers on the system ?

Platformers on the "simple" side would be good.

I think the Spyro trilogy with Elijah Wood in it were well received.

Billy Hatcher is good too.

Wario World is pretty neat and the Tak games are good. I think Vexx might have been ported to it as well which is a solid game. Out of the gamecube Crash and Spyro games I think A Heroes Tail is the only one worth bothering with.

I didnt like the first Ty very much. Starts off with focused semi-linear levels and is pretty fun, but falls apart when the game tries to go for big open stages. Never played the other two.

underrated as all hell!

The only Crash game on the GC, from what I remember is Wrath of Cortex, and I've heard that the GC port has serious frame rate issues, I have it on the PS2 though and it's a fun game, but it can get kinda hard. Likewise, the TY games are pretty good as well, I've only played the first one though so I can't really variety for the other two, but I do know that the first one does also have a few hard points. There's also of course Mario Sunshine which is great. I don't know about the Spyro games.

Also, there are some Sonic games. Namely SADX, SA2B, and maybe Sonic Heroes but Heroes is a kinda iffy.

Yes, definitely buy Ty 1 and Ty 2. Both of them are fun, unique, charming and have quite a lot of content. Nice fictional Australian setting too, which is pretty uncommon in games.

Does donkey kong jungle beat count? You need bongos.

This is the best answer. It's fun and novel. The boss battles feel pretty visceral too because you're mashing on the bongo drums to beat the crap out of enemies. It's an EAD Tokyo joint too.

I'd also highly recommend Sonic Adventure 2 Battle. It's the last ambitious Sonic game and has a lot of cool elements in it (especially the Chao Garden). It's the only good 3D Sonic game in my opinion.

Holy shit! Didn't expect to see so much Billy Hatcher. Really enjoyed the game myself. Levels are open enough for you to get creative with the mechanics.

Also agree with DK:JB recommendations.

Will be kinda hard to find ... but it sure counts !

underrated as all hell!

Isn't this one made by Treasure or something ?
It sounds kinda hard =x

Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg. Best Sonic Team game on the platform.

That is a lot considering basicaly every previous Sonic game is avaliable on the gamecube (even Sonic Fighters !)

Is Wario World seriously good? I'd read such bad things about it. I'd love it to be good, though!

Its good, the worst thing about it is how short it is.

Its really forgiving, especially if you just want to get to the end and ignore all of the bonus platforming levels. The game makes you "pay" for continues at a gameover with the coins you have, but you wind up amassing so many coins that you always have enough.

I don't know what level of cute are you exactly looking for, but consider Rayman 3: Hoodlum Havoc. It is really solid in terms of mechanics and the general setting. Some jokes are not too cute, and some enemies aren't either (most, to cut long story short, are just patchwork costumes housing dark energy balls). The mechanics aren't insanely simplistic, so keep that in mind.

I am assuming you are looking for GC games for some specific reason - while the game is alright on the Cube, PC version is probably a better choice in most cases.

I am also interested in some GC recommendations, everybody! Missed that era, and eBay exists.

Not sure if Monkey Ball counts for you, but that's a good one.

Here are GCN games on Metacritic:

http://www.metacritic.com/browse/games/release-date/available/gamecube/metascore

Sphinx isn't a platformer per se, more of a Zelda-like, and I have it for PS2 but it's also on GCN. I haven't played it yet but it comes highly recommended.

Rayman 3 is on the system.

I hear good things about I-Ninja and Pac-Man World 2.

Yay. I'll check it out. I trust in Lijik so no further research needed. Thanks man.

Oh, so it is good? That sounds worthwhile to check out. Thanks man.

I enjoyed it. It has a bit of 3D Land going on, with 3D platformer but a more 2D focus, if that makes any sense :P The platforming can get pretty challenging at times. Nothing incredible, but I thought it was a good game.

It does make sense. It sounds right up my alley, too. And Rm88~! Lookin' good, bro. Barely recognized you without your usual avatar ;)

I'm a huge platformer nerd, and aside from Super Mario Sunshine, I'd say that I-Ninja is the best one on the system. A game nobody really knows about, but was seriously a blast to play.

DK: Jungle Beat is fun too if you don't mind the physical aspect. If you played Rayman Legends at any point, DK: Jungle Beat sort of has that kind of feel to it.

Try I-Ninja! Trust me!

It's a really good game. I loved the themed worlds and the bosses. The only negatives to it are the disappointing final boss and the length of the game.

Thanks! It does feel weird not having my usual avatar :P Hope you enjoy the game if you end up buying it!

It's a solid platformer/beat'em-up hybrid. Problem I've found is that it's a bit too shallow in either regard, so it's not very challenging.. Super fun, though and rather short, though you can extend game time if you hunt down all the extras.

Bottom line: It's genuinely fun although it's very easy and short.

Get Crash Twinsanity, Crash Wrath of Cortex, Spyro A Hero's Tail. They're all three great games.Ty 1/2 are good, don't know about 3.I don't know about any 2d platformer except for Jungle Beat.
Other suggestions: get Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy and, if it's available on GC, Kya: Dark Lineage. edit: no it isn't :(

Some of the above posters made great suggestions, I definitely second Rayman 3 and I-Ninja. And Vexx too, as the poster below says. I'd add Scaler too.

Surprised to see so much love for Billy Hatcher. I have a copy sitting here but I haven't touched it yet. So I should play it? Damn. My retrogaming list is getting huge

Eh, not really imo. I remember the platforming wasn't really hot and the overall game was boring.

Just FYI, Kya's PS2 only. :)

(regarding Rayman 3) Oh, so it is good? That sounds worthwhile to check out. Thanks man.
It honestly depends on what you're looking for. I had a ton of fun with that game. It ain't perfect nor does it aim for perfection though. I like games like this, some people do not.

Twinsanity wasn't released for GC and the GC port of Wrath of Cortex was a complete hack job. I fully endorse these two games and Hero's Tail, but play them on the PS2. (Actually I don't know how the GC port of Hero's Tail turned out, but it was developed by the same people as Wrath of Cortex.) Just make sure you get the Greatest Hits rerelease of Wrath of Cortex, as the original release had insanely long load times.

The GameCube isn't well known for its platformers. The two really well known ones are Super Mario Sunshine and Sonic Adventure 2, I'd say, and I enjoyed both quite a bit. I only ever played the demo of Billy Hatcher but I enjoyed it.

underrated as all hell!

Well said! Definitely recommended.

Mario Sunshine (A visceral game)
Chibi Robo (Charming fun)
Sonic Adventure DX
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (Connect to your GBA and turn it into a Chao Tamogotchi. That sound trackthough. WOOO!)
Beyond Good and Evil (Has platformy elements but a damn good game. If you play it, you'll see why every wants a sequel)
Prince of Persia (back when Ubisoft wasn't a crap company. Decent story, good platforming and the time mechanic is well implemented)
Viewtiful Joe/Viewitul Joe 2 (Before Platinum Games, there was Clover Studio. One of the many gems they brought to us was the classic, Viewtiful Joe. Loveable characters, kickarse soundtrack, sharp graphics and fun as heck combat. Needs a HD rerelease). Henshin a go-go baby
Donkey Kong: Jungle Beat. (Holy shit, son. I've never seen a Donkey Kong game come out of nowhere and be so freakin' awesome. Fun fast paced gameplay! It's that good I consider it to be the finest Donkey Kong game, better than even Donkey Kong Country. Nintendo randomly threw us this game and it delivered on everything. From fun bosses, to comboing the entire level to a fun upbeat soundtrack, oh my is this game good).
Billy Hatcher. (Nothing special but enjoyable).
Alien Hominid(Probably the first major instance of an indie game setting the trend by making it big. Fun gameplay that still holds up to this day. I miss Miniclip).

Man I really dislike that game. It honestly felt like it was made by some annoyed intern. Generic half-arsed UI from a PS1 game, graphics and textures that had none of the detail and style that Nintendo games typical have. Generic enemies. A forgettable soundtrack. Man I have no idea why this game was made. Obviously not to be shitting on a game you like but man. Not a bad game per se, just a game I wouldn't even say is made by Nintendo. It feels nothing like one. No idea what to make of it.

Billy Hatcher and the Giant Egg

It's far from perfect, but I love this game to pieces. The mechanics in Hatcher's world are fairly sound, and manipulating the many eggs, hatching them, and then siphoning their abilities, is enjoyable. It's also very cute, but solid, puzzle-platformer, though it does get repetitive if playing for long-periods of time.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat

The actual platforming mechanics aren’t anything special for a 2D sidescroller, but the bongo drum controller does change the feel. It was cool that I had to use a coordinated, rhythmic string of beats to keep Donkey Kong moving through the levels and vanquish vile zoo creatures.

Sphinx and the Cursed Mummy

This game is rarely mentioned around here, but when it's all is said and done, the good the game provides far outweighs the bad and Sphinx is one of the better action-platforming games of it's generation. If you can find a copy for the Nintendo Gamecube &/or Playstation 2, check it out.

Only Jungle Beat.

Wario World was just boring and didn't really feel like a Wario game at all. Even back in the day, everyone knew two thirds of Sonic sucked and I suspect the rest doesn't hold up that well either. Rayman 3 can't hold a candle against 2.

Maybe Viewtiful Joe as an action platformer?

Super Mario Sunshine
Donkey Kong Jungle Beat
(2D platformer using bongos from EAD Tokyo - their first game, right before Galaxy. Their brilliance already shines through a lot)
Wario World (very short and a bit strange, but really well-made mix of platforming and action)
Vexx (Banjo-Kazooie-like Collectathon, nice level design, but quite difficult)
Rayman 3 (linear 3D platformer, not nearly as good as Rayman 2, but still fun)
Sonic Adventure 2 Battle (the Sonic / Shadow levels are fantastic, but the shooting levels are meh, the treasure collecting levels weak, if you can stand a bit of shit in between it can be a great game though)
Sonic Heroes (imo quite an underrated Sonic-game. The levels are too long an it doesn't quite reach the heights of SA2, but it also doesn't come close to the lows)
Sonic Adventure DX (if you have no access to a Dreamcast and like SA2, you can check out the first one on GameCube, too)
Sonic Mega Collection (Sonic 1-3&Knuckles, enough said)
Billy Hatcher & the Giant Egg (a creative 3D platformer, not outstanding, but fun and always happy)

I haben't played Crash Bandicoot: Wrath of Cortex or the first Spyro game on GameCube, but the second one (A Hero's Tail) is about as boring as the PS1-games, very similar in design, almost equally as clunky. Imo not worth it, but if you happen to like the PS1 games you will probably like A Hero's Tail, too. The Legend of Spyro games are a mixture of RPG and mild platforming, with a huge focus on fighting. I didn't find them a lot of fun, but they did have high production values.

EDIT: Sphinx is great, but not a platformer, rather a Zelda-clone with very mild platforming elements thrown in. They play a miniscule role in the game though.

Is i-Ninja good? I remember enjoying the heck out of its demo circa ~12 years ago. Still remember the drum n bass soundtrack.
