Had this on the mind, along with Sonic The Hedgehog 4, it's sudden confirmation of cliffhanger, and the journey I've had with it; I feel a little better now (all in good time)...

Better enough for a GIVEAWAY! This will be my first one this year, so it's gonna be nice: 10 USD USA eShop credit!

So, here are the rules.

  1. This is USA eShop credit, so make sure you have a USA system associated with the appropriate shop.
  2. The code will be PMed to the winner after they accept the prize; if they don't want it, it goes to someone else.
  3. We need to make the contest worthwhile, so if we get fewer than 10 entries, no giveaway will happen.
  4. Don't just post a link; tell us what it is at least, or tell us why you like it/it's cool (even better)!

So, ready to go? The theme for this contest is... MUSIC!

That Xenoblade Kazoo thread got me in the mood for more shit like this. All you gotta do to play is link to a youtube vid of either a gaming-related mashup, a game song played on an uncommon instrument, or remix of a gaming song; that's it! At 11:59 PM Eastern (a little less than an hour from now), I will declare a winner!

Time to hear some tunes!

So would something like this count? I'll switch my submission if it doesn't.

Edit: 4th rule now? Well it's Hydrocity Zone Act 2 + Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. It seems a decent amount of Sonic tunes (mainly the Genesis stuff & a few Sonic CD songs) are able to fit the beat of the Bel-Air theme, and this one is my favorite since it's one of my favorite tunes from any Sonic game, especially from the Genesis era.

A beautiful 4-part solo cello cover of Yearnings of the Wind.

I can't begin to describe the chills I get each time I hear it. His fingerstyle is spot on; I would love to walk through a dense forest with this track and a nice pair of headphones.

I was going to link a video of some dude playing Zelda tracks on an ocarina since you said "uncommon instruments," but that felt a little too on the nose.

Here's a dude playing the main theme on a theramin instead. It's not particularly flashy or well-presented, but some sections of the song are downright eerie while accompanying the theramin. I came across it when watching someone else play the song on a theramin a lot faster and more precise-- this stuck with me more.

I can think of a lot of remixes, but almost all my favorite non-original gaming music lies in guitar/rock covers. Good question, OP
and I was almost surprised it wasn't maxcriden when I opened the thread :p

I wanted to post this as my submission but I couldn't find a YouTube version of it, so I'll just post my other favorite remix/reimagining of an amazing vg song. It's a bit of a downer, but a beautiful one at that.

Why is it a favorite? Beyond being a skillfully made interpretation of an already gorgeous song, the remixer heightened the melancholy nature of the track without a trace of any sappiness or feeling manipulative in a way that can scarcely ever be surpassed. When I listen to it I'm also always reminded that even seemingly small gestures can echo and impact, and how important it is to make these gestures while you can; Avien passed away shortly after his contribution to this album while still in his teens.

Here are a few cool ones!

Sonic 2 Special Edition - Let's Play! - A great acapella version of the Sonic 2 ending theme by Dave Bulmer, who some people might know from his Brentalfloss collabs. It was made for a joke Let's Play of a fake game, but it's still entertaining to listen to thanks to some amusing lyrics (the latter half is especially funny if you've heard the song's original inspiration, Sweet Dream).

Tanguy Ukulele Orchestra - Snake Eater - An fast paced, yet relaxed rendition of Snake Eater performed with ukuleles. They've got some other cool gaming remixes as well, like Shinobi and Rainbow Road. I wish these guys would make more music! I e-mailed them a few years ago and they said motivation was high to make new pieces, but still nothing so far.

Retro Remix Revue - Mario Paint A funky-fresh remix of Gnat Attack Level 2 and the Save/Load song. Warning: may contain autotune.

Great, now that I'm thinking about it/checking my Favorites & Liked videos on YouTube, there's a few I wish I could've used to enter.

Super Spice Bros. 2 - Super Mario 64 x Old Spice. It's just as bizarre as you think, yet you can't look away.

Jojo's Bizarre Adventure + U.N. Owen Was Here - I'm a sucker for MADs and this one is one of my favorites on the grounds it combines a great Touhou song & one of my favorite anime/manga franchises.

SUPER MARIO CEREMONY -The 30th Anniversary Medley- - An AMAZING 18 minute medley celebrating 30 years of Mario. So many games & songs are represented, it's almost like a trip through childhood.

Kirby 64 x El Shaddai - Just as it says. It's the Boss Theme, perhaps my favorite boss music from a Kirby game, using the El Shaddai trailer. Again, weird as you'd think it'd be, but for some reason, I still randomly find myself listening to it again & again.

EarthBound - Smiles and Tears(I Am Here) sung in Japanese with English lyrics. I always thought this song with amazing at the end of the game and could tell it had a deeper meaning to it, but without lyrics or singing it felt like it could have so much more to it. Then I heard this version a few years ago and just wow....it all makes sense now why the original sounded so sad.
