Tech Support GAF Thread: No Case Too Big, No Case Too Small

My laptop has recently started turning on while it's closed and in sleep mode. I'll come back after turning it to sleep mode (either by closing it or pushing the power button) to find almost all my battery drained and it being on the lock screen. Is there any way to stop this from happening?

My laptop is the Lenovo Yoga 2 11".

Guys, I need serious help now!!!!!

My Laptop get's more and more issues, it's fucking frustrating!!!
I've decided to restore my system with a recovery disk. But it does not work!!!

I made a system backup with EaseUs Todo Backup.

I have a total of 4 disks, called:
Sys000
Sys001
Sys002
Sys003

I created that back in August 2014

Now when I go to System Recovery. There's the Backup of August already listed:
"System backup 8-3-2014 09-23"

Now I go to browse and select the .pbd file of said date inside the Sys000 disk...

"0x47D0633E [?]
Incorrect image file"

Seriously, I am so fucking desperate..
Please kill me..

What the hell am I supposed to do!?

Maybe someone here can help me. It's been a few days since I played any video games, but suddenly today I can't launch anything due to DirectX errors. For example, when launching Command & Conquer 3: Tiberium Wars, I get this:

"Please make sure you have DirectX 9.0 or higher installed. Also verify that your video card meets the minimum requirements, and that you d not have hardware acceleration disabled in the Display control panel."

I'm on a Windows 7 laptop, which yes I know is not ideal for playing games, but I've put 11 hours into C&C with no problems, and every other game I attempted to launch, I've put hours into with no issues either.

Before you tell me to change the acceleration slider settings in the Advanced settings under Screen Resolution, that option is not available so I can't do that.

When using the dxdiag tool, it says everything is working fine however this is part of the output:

DirectDraw Acceleration: Not Available
Direct3D Acceleration: Enabled
AGP Texture Acceleration: Not Available

I'm assuming one or both of these not being available is the problem.

I already tried using the DirectX Web Installer to reinstall DirectX, but it just tells me this:

"DirectX setup has determind that a newer or equivalent version of DirectX has been installed already. No installation is necessary."

So I am at a loss, and this really sucks. Any help would be appreciated.

Windows keeps track of the events that cause it to wake from sleep mode; you can access this information using the powercfg command from the command prompt (type cmd in the Start menu Search box and press Enter to display a command prompt).

The specific command you will need is powercfg -lastwake, which will return information on the device that woke your machine. You can then locate the culprit in Device Manager and turn off its ability to wake up the PC. Choose Properties, Power Management and deselect ‘Allow this device to wake up the computer'.

If they can't help you, I recommend backing up all your important documents and re-installing Windows.

What's your laptop make and model? Does it have ATI or nVidia graphics in addition to integrated video? Have you tried updating your video drivers? I have a friend that has a laptop with integrated and nVidia graphics. Sometimes she has to force a game to use the nVidia graphics (via the nVidia control panel), otherwise it defaults to the integrated video.

This isn't directed at anyone specific, but it may come in handy to anyone with tech issues.

It's funny because it's true.

Been having weird issues with a HDD recently.

Checked its S.M.A.R.T status - all is fine. However when I copy something from it to another HDD, it'll start copying at its max speed usually, then immediately halt copying and there will be a barrage of clicking noises, maybe 5-6 of them, then it'll resume the copying and rinse and repeat at random intervals. Even after the clicking stops it takes a bit of time for the copying to resume.

However like I said, S.M.A.R.T shows it's a-okay. I tried swapping both the sata cable + power cable for it internally and put it in a different controller in the mobo and still the same thing. Ran chkdsk as well. Only thing I haven't done is defragmented it, going to try that now.

Is it failing in some other way that S.M.A.R.T is unaware of?

I hate HDD issues, it's the only hardware issues I ever have with PCs. If it's failing this will be my last mechanical drive, I've replaced the rest with SSDs already.

Do NOT defrag a drive that is clicking. Get all important documents off it and then replace it ASAP.

I tried older Ver of the catalyst but nothing change after that i install new windows and the same thing keep happening what should I do? is there some test to see if the vga is the problem ?

Doing a quick Google search suggests that this is a common issue with that card. Is V-Sync on or off?

Try the latest non-beta drivers. If you get the same FPS drops, try the latest beta drivers.

Anyone have experience fixing a stuck pixel? I've got a red one just off-center that's driving me nuts:

I've tried both flashing it for several hours using UDPixel and the tap-with-a-Sharpie method to no avail.

Any ideas? My monitor is an ASUS VS228H-P.

I tried other ver such as 13.9 and 14.4 and the last one 14.12 omega but nothing change... the V-sync was off with setting low or high.

Edit: with V-sync off in lol the fps jump t0 150 but sometime it drop to 100 fps...

Toshiba Satellite C855-S5214, only got integrated video.

Haven't tried updating video drivers yet, but I'll try it.

Edit: Problem solved, thanks

Maybe your card is being throttled to prevent overheating. Try running Furmark to see if the drop in framerate corresponds to a rise in temperature. Once the temperature hits a certain threshold, the GPU usage will drop as it attempts to maintain a safe temperature. Keep an eye on it while it's running and stop it if the GPU temperature gets too hot. Generally, over 90 C is too hot. You can start the "GPU Shark" tool from furmark to monitor GPU usage and temperature.

Have you installed the flash player plugin?

If it's not flash player, you'll need to be more specific. Which pornwebsite?

So I got a new PC in December and once every few weeks the PC would boot up but then just quickly turn off and turn on again after about 3 ish seconds; it'll go on a loop until I disconnect the power.
Now my cousin told me that I should just open up the PC, take out the battery for a while and put it back in and it'll work fine and it does but then the problem comes back again after a few weeks.

Now I'm not great with computers, I mean simple stuff like take the battery out and in again I can handle but I can't really build a PC or anything like that.
Having said that, is there a more permanent solution? or should I just take the PC to him?

If you need my specs:
Gigabyte GA-H81N
i5 4690
HyperX 8gb
Cooler Master B600 B-Series 600W
970 4GB

It doesn't appear to be temperature related, those numbers look good. I'm not sure what else to suggest.

Sounds like you got a faulty power supply or the atx power connector is not seated properly to the motherboard. Did your system not come with any kind of warranty when you had it built/bought it? because your probably better off going through them first.

Are you sure you don't have any weird presets in catalyst control center and if you have AMD OverDrive or any other auto clocking software installed you may want try disabling it.

I've been having an odd issue for a while now and gave up on trying to figure out what might be causing it. Perhaps tech support gaf might have an idea.

I'm pretty sure this issue started when I updated my bios to the latest version (MB is Asus p6x58d premium). I noticed that my max download speeds for the Steam client had slowed considerably. Normally I would get around 15MB/s. Now it would sit around 5MB/s. I chalked it up to slow servers for a few weeks but the slow Steam download speeds stayed the same. I have no download speed limits in my Steam options. I've contacted Steam support a bunch of times but they're stumped on the issue.

Later I found out that if I have the option to allow downloads while in-game and load up a resource intensive game (must be resource intensive) my download speeds will shoot up to around 15MB/s where it should be. I would think it's a power management issue but even if I use the high performance option in Windows 7 power options doesn't fix the issue. I even installed asus's bloated power management software with no luck. There is nothing in device manager that would indicate an issue. I can also tell you I don't have this issue with any other clients such as Battle.net or Origin or doing speed test in any browser. It's just the Steam client that acts like this. As a last resort I tried reinstalling Steam with no luck and then I tried reinstalling Windows with no luck either.

Now there is another reason I suspect it might be a power management issue. Windows action center gave me this message about a month after I updated the bios. "Your power management system is missing a driver." When I click the link it gives me it downloads Asus Cool and Quiet software. This makes no sense to me because Cool and Quiet is for AMD hardware and not Intel. So I've decided not to install that.

It would be nice to get this minor issue resolved. It's only minor to me now because I at least have found a workaround.

Stuck pixels -- how many are you willing to live with instead of returning monitor?

I bought a Dell U2715H and it had terrible backlight bleed and 1 dead pixel in the middle so I returned it.

Bought a BENQ 27" monitor which has almost zero backlight bleeding, looks just as good if not better, and was cheaper. But it has 2 stuck pixels, one of them blue and of them green. They are off in places you wouldn't notice unless the screen was black or a solid color, but not all colors show the pixels.

Read the reviews and a lot of them mention stuck pixels on this model, and bad backlight bleeding. Mine has zero backlight bleeding issues, in fact the black levels are pretty damn impressive, but these stuck pixels are annoying.

Knowing my luck if I return it I will get a worse monitor. Would you guys live with it?

I may have the opportunity to buy a Google Pixel for $300... BUT, it appears to have vertical lines on the screen that "appear and disappear" from time to time, according to the seller. It's either that, or ordering a new Toshiba Chromebook 2 (screen quality's my biggest priority).

What would you guys do? Any experience with similar issues? Getting a $1300 device for less than a third of the price sounds extremely tempting, but the lines issue (and the fact that I want a great screen) is turning me off. What are the odds it can be repaired?

It almost looks like your card is hitting a thermal limit and then its down clocking (which is strange because your temps aren't that bad), do you have option to monitor/graph your fan speed? You can also try manual setting your gpu fan speed to max and see if your still seeing drops.

Well that's odd, have you tried playing around with the power management tab on your network card in device manager?
(Are you sure have the most recent chipset drivers installed as well)

I'm not getting any luck with messing with the power management options for my NIC.

I'm pretty sure I installed the latest chipset drivers but perhaps I messed that up.

I downloaded these drivers. I'm pretty sure they're the ones I want since my motherboard is x58 (series 5).

I find it highly dubious that all of your stuff reset because of plugging in a set of earphones... that's probably a coincidence. I would bet on the cause being a power surge, in which case it's really difficult to diagnose whether it's a motherboard or power supply thing. Your best bet is replacing the power supply and seeing if that works.

I might add that when i flip the switch behind my pc for on or off the power button on the motherboard flashes for a second. Would that lead to beleive its the power supply or motherboard?

I have a question, is there anything for windows that groups and shows nicely, what and where takes up how much space, what i mean is, my ssd is basically full, on my android phone, i can easily tell when and how much space is taken, and i can clean it out accordingly,

MgEZEFll.jpg

And then going one step deeper i see which folder/app weighs how much exactly.

Now i would be happy if the windows file explorer would actually give any useful details straight up, without me having to hower over every single folder to see how much it takes up in total.

Hy4vl6Vl.png

So basically is there a program that does just that ? So i can easily understand what takes up how much space, without me having to manually check each and every folder. Thanks !

I guess this is the thread for this but gaf avatar images aren't loading, images in the threads and ads load fine but just not avatars. I cleared my cookies and cache on Firefox but that didn't work and tried on Chrome but it's the same thing.

*edit* They show up on my phone.

Have you tried just using the chipset driver Version 9.1.1.1020 available from asus's support website you may also want to ensure your network card is using the correct lan driver.

So basically is there a program that does just that ? So i can easily understand what takes up how much space, without me having to manually check each and every folder. Thanks !

If you right click on your local C: drive and select properties, it will give you a basic pie graph of how much space have and how much is used/free. If you want more details you'll need a third party program such as the one Rufus suggested.

If your looking to free up space you could always try running running disk cleanup (Charm bar > search >disk cleanup) and ensure to click the clean up system files in bottom left. From there you check off what do and don't want any more, it may help you alleviate your space issues temporarily but you may want to consider purchasing another drive for storage.

Hey guys - weird issue time.

NeoGAF keeps having random 3-5 second freezes/hangups while using Firefox. Any idea what the issue might be? It doesn't happen in IE or Chrome, and it only happens on GAF.

Hi GAF! I need a great Wireless setup that gives great coverage to 2-3 houses away.

What routers, extenders, etc can you suggest?

Budget: as long as it reach to those houses.

I didn't see your post until just now. Were you able to track down the cause?

I started getting this bsod when I upgraded my video card from an AMD 6970 to nVidia GTX 970. I also tried rolling back the drivers, but I had the same issue with 3 different versions of the nVidia drivers. I switched back temporarily to play Gat Out of Hell and had zero problems.

I contacted my video card manufacturer's support department and they recommended using DDU (http://www.wagnardmobile.com/DDU/) to uninstall all the old drivers and reinstall the latest ones from nVidia. They also asked if I could try the card in a different computer. Unfortunately, I don't have another PC to test the card in. I followed their DDU recommendation and as soon as I launched the game again my PC shut right off, but the power LED was blinking constantly and would not turn back on. I tested my PSU with a PSU tester and the PG (Power Good signal) was reading HH. Luckily my PSU was still under warranty. I'm awaiting my replacement PSU which should arrive next Thursday. Right now, my hypothesis is that the PSU was failing and the new video card exacerbated the problem.

Hope this helps.

I got my warranty replacement PSU from Corsair last Thursday and so far so good, no more blue screens with the 970.

Welp, I think my video card is dead.

Started up Heroes of the Storm and my screen started to glitch out, throwing artifacts all over the place and skewing the screen.

Closed the game and the screen was still distorted so I restarted my PC, both screens are now black.

Plugged in one of my monitors into the integrated hdmi and it works fine.

My video card has a lifetime warranty, should I send in a ticket or try a few more things?

Try it in a different PC if you can, then submit a ticket. They'll do some basic troubleshooting and tell you how to send it in for a replacement if it's pooched.

I have no other pc to try it in.

I tried reseating it, replugging power cables, cleaning using canned air then plugged it back in and it still wont show anything.

im back to using the integrated gpu and everything seems fine, i can even run a few games.

Proudly debt free. If you need a couple bucks, just ask.
I've recently ran MalwareBytes and MSE after not doing it for a good year. The found 2 viruses and I removed them. Someone mentioned to check the Event Viewer as well to make sure nothing strange is there.

The only odd thing I see which looks odd is "CaptureLibLog" Is it malicious? Based on a little more research I did, it comes with Freemake Video Downloader, which I did download in 2013. I uninstalled that a while back, so I should be good now right? I'm just worried that it says "Enabled" in the event viewer. I can't seem to find any signs of the program left on my computer except for that log in the Event Viewer. Is there anything else I can do or just I just not worry?

Top result on Google for CaptureLibLog is the GAF thread you made about it.
I would also run:
Junkware Removal Tool http://thisisudax.org/
SuperAntiSpyware http://www.superantispyware.com/
Spybot Search and Destroy http://www.safer-networking.org/dl/

Just use the free versions of SAS and Spybot. Run each one individually and do full scans until they don't detect anything. You can uninstall them after they scan clean if you want.

Install a good free antivirus like bitdefender, avg, or avast. MSE isn't as good as it used to be.

All right, I'm not a computer expert and I've exhausted my google fu, so maybe someone here will be able to help me. My son's computer won't finish start up due to the oleaut32.dll file being missing. It gives this error message about the oleaut32 file when bootup first starts, moves to log in screen, and does it again once I log in. It then goes to a black screen with "This is not an authorized copy of Windows 7" or whatever at the bottom right. Can't do anything from safe mode and safe mode with command prompt doesn't bring up the prompt. I put in the original Windows 7 disc and tried to run the repair computer option, but it gives me an error message saying it isn't the same version of Windows?? Now what? Or are we fucked? I have no idea what he did, be it accidentally delete something or a virus or what.

This one is going to be weird. I saved an Excel document and closed the window, then I my computer shut down. Next morning I checked and my document is gone, nowhere to be found. The computer can find the quick access links, but the document is not anywhere on the system.

Is there a way to recover the document or I´m 100% screwed?

Have you tried running an off boot system file checker?

From Windows 7 disc repair computer option select command prompt Type:
sfc /scannow /offbootdir=c:\ /offwindir=c:\windows

You can also try
sfc /SCANFILE=c:\windows\system32\oleaut32.dll /OFFBOOTDIR=c:\ /OFFWINDIR=c:\windows

*If your windows installation is on another drive you will have to replace the C:\ with the correct drive letter(E.g. D:\ , E:\ )

But typically when windows throws you an authentication error its due to malware, so you would probably better off safely backing up anything important and reinstalling windows.

Have you tried opening a file explorer window select computer and searching for the xls file, if your desperate you can also try a wildcard search (*.xlsx) for all excel files on your disk and go through them all.

May want to check you unsaved files folder as well:
C:\Users\[YourNameHere]\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Office\UnsavedFiles
