The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

Yeah, positivity has a real tough life around GAF :p

Just share your opinion and justify it with more than a single sentence and people will have to deal with it. Really, the way official topics go it's circle jerking that people really have to look out for. I've seen people run out of topics for simply going against the rainbow-fairydust-unicorn grain.

You already know how this is gonna go. It's gonna get 76 metacritic average, people will say PS4 still has no killer apps, other people will say all the reviews are wrong even though they've never played it, others will decry its cinematic focus, others will laud its visual splendor and say they like story-driven games like this and they don't really care what reviews say anyway ;P

This is pretty much exactly what I expect. Like with Driveclub but with a higher MC score.

This was a really pleasant way of saying that the threads tomorrow will look something like this:

I just hate the fact when you like a game that others don't like, it's called drinking kool-aid. That sounds durogatory to me.

Yeah like that has been a problem.

I just want to reiterate that while The Order has probably had to face an unusually large amount of skepticism in its topics, it's not like that cynicism came from no where. The game spent the better part of its entire first year being showcased in a demo nobody liked and then the small remainder of the time showing us very visually impressive but completely tepid and predictable third person shootout gameplay. The game may be amazing, or it may just be a decent first attempt, or it may be bad... but I don't really know why there is this implication that the hating is just arbitrary or people looking to be mean.

For whatever reason, The Order has been a test case study in how to squander a game's unveiling. They way overpromised at the start with a talk of material-based destruction playing a major role in the game, then they followed that up with eight months of watching the same tedious corridor, and even their last major stage appearance at PSX was fraught with awkwardness. And the demo impression itself was more positive than past demos, but didn't set any worlds on fire.

I hope RAD releases a retrospective on how they came to decisions regarding how to showcase the game to the world. A nice 45 minute documentary on it.

They use that term in politics a lot too. It IS derogatory :p

Hey guys sorry if this was answered but do we know if there's going to be a preset from RAD or Sony available for the Gold headset app?

This is bordering on persecution complex. Where has anyone hated on you or others with being positive about the game? Maybe I'm just not seeing it.

Not me specifically, but I have seen posts indicating people being positive towards this game are said to be drinking the devs kool-aid.

I received my copy tonight.

It started off a little slow but I am really into it as of Chapter V. It's a lot of fun. I think they could really do away with the quicktime stuff and just focus on the Gears of England gameplay. I am sucker for this style and story so I am definitely hoping for more.

On chapter 7 at the moment. as someone who has played Ryse on the PC at its highest settings, i have to say that order 1886 is by far the most beautiful looking game ive ever played. Some shots are just outstanding

There have been some less-than-glowing impressions in this thread that have been treated with respect so I expect nothing less from the OT.

Review thread, though...yeah, avoid that shit. Read the first post to get the gist and then skedaddle.

Gears of England means The Order: 1887 will feature co-op missions

I don't think this was a marketing issue. We'll find out tomorrow though.

Is it really surprising how these threads turn out? The vast majority of people do not own the game. That's never an excuse for shitposting, but with barely any people having played the game, it's not hard to see why threads like this are met with scepticism and speculation.

I remember people going from "Damn, looking good" to "Wow, pre-order cancelled" in the old Wolfenstein: The New Order OT a week before release. Why? because posts like this suddenly appeared: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=112460230&postcount=1744

Mind you, I'm not calling this poster out for his bullshit or anything. He is allowed to have his own opinion. But I remember people growing concerned because a few people had similar opinions like him and were posting negative impressions. Now, as we know, the game turned out to be pretty good. NeoGAF loves it.

But because only a few people own the game in threads like this, it only takes one person writing negative impressions for everyone to worry. Because people don't have the game themselves, they put too much faith in subjective impressions.

It bloody well should.

They could have two players on separate linear paths with one AI companion and also regular missions with two human companions together.

I really hope they think about expanding the cover based gameplay for the next one.

Not Pop and Stop but Laze and Gaze. It is sedate but very similar to Gears.

Jezuz hivemind shit.

Yep, these threads have been weird, there has been more people complaining about people complaining about the game than people, you know, actually complaining about the game. It's making me dizzy.

I don't think this was a marketing issue. We'll find out tomorrow though.

How isn't it? They have control over how they present the game, and turn after turn they have faced persistent criticism for each leg of that journey - whether it be mediocre demos or lame overarching comment about trying to make cinematic movie games and aspect rations and filmic experiences.

What part of this marketing jaunt has been met positively overall other than its visual prowess? The game can be amazing, but I think they are responsible for why everyone seemingly 'jumps' at the implication the game might be even less than it seems. People have been conditioned over the past year not to expect much due to how RAD (or Sony, whoever is making these decisions) is choosing to showcase the game.

I would call their issues "marketing" so much as "presentation" (for whatever that distinction is worth). The idea of what the game was trying to do was bound to get some hate thrown at it no matter what (true of lots of games I guess). The problem is that in all of their presentations, they never really showed people who had doubts anything to assuage their doubt. It was a nasty cycle.

I just reached chapter 2 and I gotta say that I'm pretty impressed so far. Visually amazing, good dialogue, good acting, awesome "cinematography" for a game, and the shooting feels a lot better than I anticipated. AI seems good, not amazing, and the action seems dynamic enough.

I'm not sure those criticisms are representative of that large a part of this game's target audience, I think it'll do well... the marketing was pretty solid. Aside from some negative impressions earlier on, I think they did a pretty good job. Some games are just harder to showcase in unfinished demos.

It's definitely in the same style but with notable differences. There was an irritating point when I actually had to pick off enemies hands with my sniper rifle because they wouldn't poke their heads out from behind cover. They were blind firing. I guess that's not a bad idea for the AI since it knows it's going to get picked off but trying to shoot their hands was tedious.

Also, I hope I get to use my favourite weapon again. When they first let you use it I didn't know what to expect and now I absolutely need to get my hands on it again.

Specifically saying "kool aid"? Could check all the recent Order threads with impressions in them for that term. The game's close to being released to already in people's hands here. So that time of hype and "drinking kool aid" is over anyway, right?

:) All that means is it is finally time for the release the stages of grief, I mean release, are over.

I feel like they've been very upfront with their vision of the game. I don't think the marketing misrepresented what the game actually was. It is a 'filmic experience'. It is what it is.

We'll find out in the next 12 hours as to whether the demos were a general misrepresentation of the game's quality. The demos might have been mediocre because the game is mediocre.

The great thing is, a lot of the impressions in this thread have been quite informative, whilst remaining concise and to the point, likely painting a pretty good picture of what to expect from the game. It will be interesting to compare journalist reviews to GAFer impressions, because so far we actually already have quite a number. Impressions from over 30 different GAFers in-fact.

Also, I don't find myself using the L3 to run mechanic at all. I tend to walk to my next objective because I don't want to miss anything en route. This doesn't feel like the type of game that you want to run through as well. Not just because you're looking for things to examine but you also want to make sure you don't run into an enemy encounter unprepared.

There is a certain stubbornness wrt the insistence on "cinematic experience", showing a demo that really isn't aimed to impress with gameplay, things like sacrificing immersion by switching camera angle for simple things like opening doors and stealth kills. I don't understand it at all, there's a ton of potential in a new IP like this, they know what works, like context sensitive cover and crouch for stealth, mp is a must for any shooter these days but decided to reinvent the wheel.

This is the only thing I'm going to say. Nothing else. But there is one thing above all that was surprising for me, especially with the expectations they created since the reveal. It's neither negative nor positive, just different. I wouldn't say it's a real spoiler, it has to do with the type of enemies in the game.

For the people that expect a "team up with my Order buddies to take down Lycans" experience, I think only 5% of enemies in the game are monsters. The remaining 95% are human, I think. The percentages might be off but the amount of human enemies vastly overshadows the Lycans.

What was hilarious about that whole situation (and I've mentioned this before) is that the thread went through a hype, dehype and rehype cycle in like 24 hours. Those few people got it early, had negative impressions, and some people freaked out. People went from "Preordered" to "Preorder canceled" to "reordered it!" in like a matter of hours. It was totally silly, since the game turned out to be pretty good.

That's why I've been saying for days, whatever the few early impressions, let's wait until we have the game in hand so we can all see what we think for ourselves. No need to freak out over any impressions.

So the trophy does tell us something :(
