The Order 1886 | Impressions Thread of not shooting the messenger.

So I finished it.

Took me 10 hours with a few breaks in between.

Graphics and Audio was fantastic, however tragically, it had the first Halo's problem where they reused the same type of level in later part of the game. I know the reasoning, but one of the areas repeated
Fighting Lycans in a warehouse setting
was too familiar, without a significant change at all in the surroundings.

Story was good, but I can understand why many is frustrated about it. It's not half-assed, but definitely half-told where you know they are saving for a future sequel (or DLC). Always go in full blast for god's sake, it's not like you can crunch out a sequel a month later.

Gameplay was fun except that the use of the creative guns were far and between.

Overall I'd give it a 8/10, and rate it somewhere between Advanced Warfare and the first Uncharted.

Will I buy a sequel though? Yeah, but RAD please. Just tell us a complete story next time.

What difficulty?

Reviewers are unleashing their creativity. Here's an excerpt from the preview of the review from Forbes http://www.forbes.com/sites/erikkain/2015/02/18/11-things-you-need-to-know-about-the-order-1886/:

1. It’s the perfect game to pair with Mountain Dew and Doritos!

Here’s why: There are so many cut-scenes and moments where you don’t have to do anything but sit and watch, you’ll have your hands free. This makes it super easy to wolf down super delicious Doritos which can only be properly washed down with gulp after gulp of frosty fresh Mountain Dew!

7. Hey look, it’s time for some more delicious Doritos! And don’t forget the Mountain Dew!

This is because, no matter what RaD says, this game is not a $100 steak. You will need to eat something else.

What difficulty?

Medium. Can't be arsed to play at high since I'm planning to do other things this 4 day weekend :D

I might come back to it later though. Want to see if I missed anything storywise.

Oh and also, there should be an exposition on Blackwater. The Order is pretty weak on explaining its world tbh.

Someone was mentioning that there was a fanmade wiki that explained some things. Don't have a link but maybe the fans found some story notes in game that others have not?

That's cute.

Is the AI challenging and engaging in your opinions?

I hope changing difficulty to Hard to will also lead to some changes in not only gun damage but also enemies' strategy and behavior. I just glanced at the spoiler thread and saw some unimpressive AI responses, which really worried me :|

AI is fairy aggressive but predictable

Enemy variety is very small as well. Up to chapter 10 , I've encountered
1)Standard human soldier with Pistol, Rifle, Shotgun
2)Standard human soldier with metal helmet
3)Lycans
There have been zero actual boss encounters

Despite having spent quite some time on my review, it's actually one of my shorter articles. I think this is because there's simply not that much to explain. It's a game you really have to experience to understand what works and what doesn't work.

And, well, there's a lot you can't share without spoiling things.

How fun and how varied are the encounters though? Is each encounter a different experience?

No, fairly certain they just took what they got from the game summary.

You know what the story feels like? When someone explains about what he does in his job to you, a stranger, and left out certain parts because subconsciously they took it for granted that everyone knows what they are talking about.

Except of course, you don't, and you just stare blankly at their use of acroynms and terms that makes absolutely no sense in your head.

Is that a good thing or a bad thing?

Christ on a bike I hope RAD or other developers never pay attention to message boards and youtube and so on while developing a vision. I hope NaughtyDog doesn't even have an internet connection at their office. And I don't care about pre-release marketing either, that is just servicing hardcore fans, mixed in with trolls, who by definition will never be happy. Let them concentrate on the fucking game and then let people discuss it when their friends and reviewers have it. A playable early build and a few interviews, are more than generous. They are not obliged to do shit, after all.

I'm completely with you on this one. I was responding the the posts above me, and it's why I asked my follow up question about the value in the drip-feed approach over a long period.

I don't think it helped that the game was announced at the PS4 reveal, or that it was delayed.

Thanks! :D

If I get 10 I'll be happy.
How long was the Last of Us? Was it that short too? As TLoU took me two or three weeks to complete, I think it won't bother me too much if The Order is a little bit shorter.

Overall impression? Score lol.

Same as yesterday. Just would add that ending was unsatisfying

So I have been playing this games for seven hours. It think i am on chapter 12 or 13 so here are my impressions

+ game is beautiful . Best looking game on any platform including pc. Not only it looks good it feels grounded and art matches the technical excellence. I cant describe why but it has CG feeling to it. It reminds me of concept CGI videos some times. Animation is also terrific.

+ Voice acting and music is great. Music is really haunting and unique. Guns also sound very punchy

+ Game play is also good. Sir Galahad moves much faster than i expected but the guns feel much heavier than Uncharted etc. Also guns pack quite a punch. Cover is assigned to a but but there is also soft cover when you get close to it. it takes some time getting used to tough

+ Pacing is good

+ Characters and their interaction feels very natural and all of them feel grounded .

+ did i mention how beautiful this game is

= playing on hard some times AI feels great other times very stupid. don't know why so i am neutral on this aspect. when it works its great when not then you know.

- QTE melee. i don't generally hate qte and they are quite punchy but you lose this sense of controlling character. like camera angle changes and it feels very disjointed

- start of the game is very slow. like really really slow

- Lore surrounding the game is great and without mentioning any spoiler ill just say that story is just ok. much better than many other games but i was expecting some thing more or different. any how this is personal preference so wont go into details

- Transitions from game play to cut scene are not as seamless as i hoped for a game with no prerendered cut scenes

Over all i am enjoying it a lot. it gives me feeling of playing RE or Maxpayne for the first time.

If you like cinematic shooter without too much other craps to do then this is game for you . if you are a guy which perfers open areas and wild wilderness to explore with xp leveling etc then don't even bother .

My rating uptill now Tombraider Out of Uncharted 2

I'm not gonna post that video, because I'm afraid it'd be seen as trolling if I did...but I watched that "interview" video that someone did for this game, and i gotta admit it made me laugh pretty hard, haha.

I think The Last of Us is usually a 10-15 hour game. I've done about 4 playthroughs and I think I've always ended up in that range.

So do you also feel that the story is incomplete?

Abrupt is a better word to use. any how ill make a detailed post in spoilers thread about it.

Anyhow I will say it again it was unsatisfying for me and you should go in with open mind. May be you will like it

I wonder if RAD gonna give post release support with this game like Evolution did with Driveclub. Building all of those graphical assets must be really hard.

I don't know about you guys but I usually take everyone's review with a grain of salt. I've played to many games that scored bad but I had a great time playing. At this point they are just nice reads for me before I play it myself.

Edit: Just realized I'm no longer a junior member. YAY!

Sounds absolutely awful, as predicted by many.

I don't understand this 'to be continued' shit in video games. It makes no sense commercially. You want people to buy the sequel, right? You want to create a 'franchise', right? Then make sure you don't piss people off with your first fucking game by not giving them a complete experience!

Look, if you tell a complete story you can always leave a hook or two in there for a writer to run with for a sequel if the game sells well. Fans will enjoy speculating where the story might go from the end of the first one even more when they don't have a concrete idea where the story is heading next. Then you can sell the 2nd and 3rd games as if the series was always planned as a trilogy - this is almost a time honoured tradition at this stage. If it doesn't sell well, at least you delivered a full experience to your fans, who will be grateful, and there's no backlash for failing to finish what you started.

When you use a cliffhanger or 'to be continued' ending you just leave people feeling shortchanged, as well as feeling like they have a rough idea of what's going to happen in the next game. It's less exciting, not more. And it's just a terrible, anti-consumer practice when the game costs 60 bucks and the sequel won't be out for two years, minimum. There are mediums where cliffhanger storytelling works. AAA blockbuster gaming is just so obviously not one of them.

Gah. Sorry, that's one of my massive pet peeves in narrative games.
