The iPhone 4 |OT|

I have a problem with my 3GS and couldn't find a better thread to ask, so hopefully you guys cab help me out. This morning, I woke up and checked the time on my phone as usual and then didn't touch it for the next three hours. Then it started making one of the default chime sounds (not sure which, I always run muted) and when I picked the phone up it was showing my regular icons and everything except there was a loading circle on the screen and it kept playing the chime over and over. Assumed that was it freaking out over something because it was at 2% battery so I just let it run out.

Now when I try to boot, I just get the white apple with a loading circle and it keeps playing the chime too. What the hell is going on? I haven't even been into my phone for over a year, haven't messed around with another jailbreak in that time and I haven't installed a new app for months. Haven't even updated any apps for weeks. It's a 3GS with iOS 4.0 with whatever jailbreak was first with an untethered 4.0 JB for Windows... Maybe blackra1n?

I would just run a new jailbreak but this is a phone from another country locked to a carrier there, unlocked with whitesn0w, and I'm kinda terrified of bricking it since I'm not very experienced in jailbreaking stuff. I know I need to avoid updating the baseband somehow...

Replaced my back with one of those transparent backs. i think it looks pretty sweet, crappy pic not withstanding.

are there any real rumour regarding iPhone 5 or anything? For some reason I'm hankering for an iPhone and want to know how long to wait!

Will probably launch around October.

Rumors right now consist of larger screen, LTE and a new design (whether it will be tear-drop design ala what Topolsky is still up for debate, as some rumors point in another direction right now).

Lately, I've been having some issues with my iPhone 4. My carrier is Verizon and I'm on iOS 5.1.

First, my GPS is screwy. I have to go into Maps and have it pinpoint my location, or go into Airplane mode for a while, and then back to regular mode, before I can use any other app that uses location services, like Weather. Went to a Genius Bar and they said my carrier could be having problems pushing that information to me.

Second, it takes a long time for new emails on my Hotmail account to reach my iPhone and MBP (Lion) Mail app. I figure it must be trouble with the POP3 server. In the morning when I first turned on my phone it would notify me of all the emails I received overnight. But now I have to go into the app. Hit cancel when it asks me to select a wifi hotspot, and then it searches for emails.

I used to not have these issues and it's gotten quite annoying.

Is anyone else having these issues?

No problems with mail, but I can't seem to download anything from the appstore on my Iphone4. I get a message that I'm unable to buy and try again later, it's been like this most of the day (Netherlands). But I am able to download them on Itunes.

I'll bet anything at this point that it won't be a teardrop design, but will definitely incorporate an aluminum backing in some capacity. Whether that will be a rounded edges iPad style or a flat i4 back, is up for debate.

So my sister fell into a pool at a party with her iPhone 4 in her pocket. She put it in a sealed bag with rice to draw the water out, but instead of leaving it there for several days she turned it on just a few hours after this. I got home the day after, and she insisted I should try fix it right now despite my warning that the attempt could kill it.

Pushing the power button has no visible effect. When connected to a PC, it shows the Apple logo for several seconds but them reboots again infinitely. I also tried connecting it to the wall charger: it booted, but only showed the "Connect with iTunes" screen. Seems to me like the battery's dead?

Is there any way to save the phone and the data on it? She hasn't made a backup for several weeks..
It's out of warranty and there aren't any Apple stores in my country anyway, only premium resellers. The nearest one is about 1.5 hours from here. Sigh.

She might have had a fighting chance if she left it in the rice it seems. I'd be interested to see if you could retrieve the data off of there being a flash drive.

I did, but I don't think there's much hope.

Possibly. I read some stories about iPhones that got completely submerged but the owners still were able to get them to work again. Some of them involved opening it to completely dry it and clean possible corrosion. I'd rather not do this, I don't want to worsen the situation by accidentally damaging some component in the process.

For the last little while my iPhone 4 has been going from 25%-0% battery in a second. Pretty much dies as soon as it hits 25%.

Any ideas on how to fix this?

Buy a replacement battery Take it to an Apple store and get the battery replaced.

My AppleCare ran out a while back, so I'm kind of wary of taking it in. I'll be replacing it within a year I think, so it might not be worth the price of fixing it.

Have you tried a reset?

Total 'restore factory default' reset? No I haven't yet. I guess I'll be giving that a shot in case it's a software issue. It's in otherwise great shape, not sure what could be wrong.

Is there a way too turn off sending iMessages to a specifict contact?

My friend downgraded
;)
from iPhone to Samsung s3, but my phone keeps trying to send iMessage first. After few minutes (probably timeout ) it sends SMS , or i manually force it with "send as sms".

I tried deleting his contact, but as soon as i add it back messaging app switches to iMessage

My iPhone 4 won't connect to iTunes on my brand new MacBook Air 13" 2012. I'm getting an error message that says "iTunes could not connect to this iPhone. A secure network connection could not be established."

It works fine with iTunes on my PC and I can even see the photos on it with my MBA (through iPhoto), so I'm really clueless about what to do.

Any idea?

Got a new car this week and noticed something that I do not like :(. It has ability to sync to bluetooth and play music via bluetooth. However it doesn't display the information of the music it is playing, AND i am trying to import contacts from phone to car and you cant send contact information via bluetooth? However my windows phone 7 does display the track/artist/album of whatever it is playing. Is there something different about the bluetooth on iphone?

Keep getting a strange message on my Iphone, seemingly randomly:

Is it worth updating the iphone4 to 6.0.1 (from 4.2.1)?

I would say going from 4 to 5 is a must.

So many features in iOS5 that are useful, iCloud, iMessage, notification centre etc.

The jump from iOS5 to 6 is somewhat more to taste, since you lose a couple things like Google maps, only to gain shared photostream, do not disturb.

Arguably, well maybe not even arguable, iOS5 was the biggest leap in iOS since getting apps in iPhone OS 2. It really was putting in many of the major features iOS was lacking. Why, per chance, did you not want to upgrade then, but want to now?

How do you upgrade to OS5? It looks like it will upgrade to OS6.

I've been getting messages with some of my apps saying that they can't update because I need a new version. I'm not willing to lose google maps, though.

You don't have the option any more via Apple. It's latest only.

Yes, the the latest version of Xcode, the developer suite for iOS, only goes as far back as 4.3. So basically, if you sign off an app to support iOS6 from the latest Xcode, it can't support iOS 4.2.1 and earlier.

So, yeah, aside from jailbreaking or otherwise finding a copy of the iOS5 software (can you just install these?), you have to go to iOS6.

Still curious as to why you bypassed iOS5.

To be honest though, I'm not as disappointed at Apple Maps as much as I thought I would be. Obviously, the "Google" side of it is missing, so finding points of interest via Google search engine, but that can actually be done on Google Maps website, if I need it. Otherwise you lose stuff like street view. I would say the actual software for Apple Maps is pretty sweet.

I'm getting an iPhone4. How do I transfer in my old contacts? My old phone(dead) has a regular sim card so to get that data I guess I'd have to get a sim card reader. Then what?

I'm still on the iP4 and I have to say I'm still loving it. For me it's the perfect size and has a sturdy feel to it. Not to mention it's still a great piece of tech. After doing research on the iP5 I don't plan to upgrade for another year.

Same here, one of the best purchases I've ever made tech-wise.

Usual problem - home button got unresponsive. Not always but most of the time I have to press it harder to work. Double clicks are very hard to get.

Physicaly the button still clicks like normal, not as good as on iPhone 5 or iPad (which i have so I can compare) but it still clicks.

Since it still clicks could it be that button is ok and it just needs cleaning?

Should I order replacement button from ebay? I have a friend who works in (nokia official) repair center and he will do it for free (actually free beers :) ), but I need to get replacement button.
Any recommendation where to buy on ebay? I know everything is from China, but so are original parts.

It's funny how tech savy people on here are. I've never had a smartphone before and you all act like I'm buying some prehistoric stone tablet. Apple products hold up well. Really well. For basic web browsing, email, photos and what have you, this phone is more than ideal for me. I was able to buy everything I needed cheaply from eBay. It's amazing.

Did you at least get the 4S? And yeah, it's still a good smartphone. You can browse GAF on it and play Game Dev Story.

4. Cheaper and has the coolest looking design on the planet. Going to downgrade the device to iOS 4.0.2 and enjoy the simplicity and debloated nature of the old iPhones. :')
