Bloodborne: Impressions After 40 Hours (EDGE)

I'm certain that I'm not the first to say this, but I'm getting major monster hunter vibes from these weapon designs. The sword with the teeth looks like some of the great sword designs, the gun looks like a light bowgun (without the bow part),and the massive, blocky hammer looks and behaves similar to MH as well.

Which is very awesome, by the way.

oh well, looks like i'm just buying it to support, There's no way i'll be able to beat this game.

A wii u exclusive on the least powerful console that most people on the planet will never play.

oh ok, so since you didn't get a chance to play it it doesn't exist.

I see how it is

There is only one shield and the game is only 10 hours long?!?!

:p

Just reading the YouTube comments from that launch trailer, how about this for the OT title:

Bloodborne: I just cummed blood

How about it?

Actually, that is seriously wrong.

Bloodborne |OT| One's demise is always one's own making.

Why not go with a bit of Hawkeye Gough for the OT?

Fits for the player who turns into a beast? And for the frustated players who play the game wrong.

Seriously though, has it been confirmed if that female voice actor in some Bloodborne trailers is the same person that voiced the Maiden in Black?

Armored Core, the Otogi games, Souls and King's Field have a Moonlight Sword. SAME UNIVERSE CONFIRMED?!?!?!

I'll allow it.

I'd argue the same deity being present in two games is a little more concrete than a weapon, but I like the idea of all of From's games being in the same Universe.

Thats a known reference and one that does not have many implications in the lore.

A priest saying Umbasa which was said by followers of a certain religion in Demons Souls.....I dunno.

Well, the weapon in question is usually one of the most or the most powerful weapon in the game, sometimes by a large margin (it's the best weapon in Otogi 2 in a ridiculous fashion), and it always has a transparent blade that glows slightly.

The Moonlight Sword is central to the plot of King's Field, at the very least, since it's handed to you as the chosen sword to kill the final boss in several of the games.

Well, we don't know about Umbasa for sure, but I have a feeling it has little plot significance.

Like how Umbasa is a fanservice, hmmmm?

A voice actress doesn't have lore implications unless it's supposed to be the same character...

Using a phrase that exists only in a single world which is lore tied is different entirely. However, verdict is still out on Umbasa. there is the potential that is also fan-service. But this isn't the same thing

Furthermore, fromsoft (as pointed out about the moonlight sword) is extremely self-referential. Any connection between separate series which isn't implied or explicit through text or in game means other than simple existence is pure fan-fiction

I dunno, which is why I asked. If it's the same person, I'm just wondering if it has any significance or if it's just a nod to DeS.
DeS, DS, and DSII share a lot of voice actors. I don't think Blue Sentinel Targray is secretly Solaire or Patches (from both games) was in actuality Lautrec. Sharing a voice actor does not mean there is a connection in From games.

Hasn't Miyasaki stated that Bloodborne was never considered to be Demon's Souls II. He could be straight-up lying, I suppose, like what they did with The Last of Us.

If you outsourced to one of the best Voice acting houses in gaming, would you change? Since Demon's Souls every single actor the company/actors they've used have been beyond stellar. We'll find out soon enough if there's more to it, though.

So there are only 12 weapons? That seems low for an rpg.
Well, why don't we list the 'melee' weapons first off that we have seen in promo material before the game's even out?

Saw cleaver, axe, hammer, whip, giant scythe, dual daggers, and fist weapons.

That's already 7 melee weapons, but each of these has a 'second form' that plays so differently it might as well be a new weapon. The cleaver retracts into a sort of shortrange axe, the regular looking axe turns into a long polearm weapon, the hammer turns into a dual wield set of a sword and smaller hammer with its own moveset, the whip is also a cane sword, the scythe is also a shortsword once you join the pole and the blade, the daggers combine into one weapon, and the fists do something we haven't seen yet.

That's not to mention the stuff we've only seen in art, like that giant blade in this image:

Which seems to be maybe an 'upgrade path' of the sword that can become the giant hammer?

So no, it's not only 6 melee weapons. Even if it was, which it's not, those six are functionally 12 weapons due to the multiple movesets for transformation.

I never played Demon's Souls or Dark Souls, so can someone please clarify one thing for me, as it is going to fully and 110% determine if I do indeed pick this game up or not (as I am super interested in doing so)...
Is it a matter of if you die in this game that is it? And you have to start all over?
Or is there some kind of checkpoint system in place?

I have always been under the impression it is the latter, but so much talk about how brutal the previous games are leave me with the impression perma death may be part of it all, so I just need clarification.

I do not have a lot of time to play games. Get to play in hour or two stretches. Might not get to play for weeks at a time. Then I can get 4 days straight I do play. So a checkpoint system is pretty much imperative for me to ultimately enjoy a game these days.

Appreciate any feedback when possible. I am ready to purchase it from Best Buy with my GCU, a $10 Gift Card, and some RZ Credit if I feel like I could potentially enjoy iy.

Death will only set you back to where you last 'rested', and you must recover the 'currency' you were carrying by killing the enemy that killed you. If you fail in that task, you lose the currency forever.

There is no true permadeath. The game autosaves constantly, and you cannot pause or revert to an earlier save.

We were just talking about that. You can hear her in lots of the other trailers too. It's most likely her.

The VA that is, not the Maiden in Black.

There is a checkpoint system. In Dark Souls, for example, bonfires are placed throughout the world. When you die, you respawn at the last bonfire you rested at. The punishment for dying is that you lose your "souls" (which function as XP and money), but you can get your souls back by returning to the place where you died. If you die again without retrieving your souls, they're lost for good. Bloodborne has a similar system.

THis isn't a rogue type game. It's an adventure/rpg game. There is progression and there are checkpoints. Once you die you will be put back at the last resting spot. You will only lose your souls if you haven't used them for leveling up or buying stuff. But you can collect the lost souls if you can manage to go back to the place you met your death.

The game can be hard for a beginner- you will die a lot. But you'll get good at it eventually. That's its charm.

Awesome. Sounds kinda sorta similar to ZombiU with that one mechanic which I loved. Thank you for the fast response. Just picked it up for $36. Cannot beat that.

Thanks to the other replies as well. I am in. I love the vibe and everything I have seen about it, so did not need much else. Just did not want a permadeath situation. I am fine with hard, as pointed out, getting good at it is half the reason you play.
