How do people even fight
Rom without killing the minions first? By the end there's like 50. How do you not get hit?

My strategy was to kill the initial wave and then wail on Rom during the first phase. You can continue to attack during the startup of the teleport and actually knock him out of it. If you can keep up the damage you can get it down to half health before the actual fight begins (you might be able to do more, but I ran out of stamina). From then on, I didn't lock on and I pretty much kept moving all the time to avoid getting caught by magic or spiders. I would only run and do two-hit combos on Rom and run away. It can be a bullshit fight depending on how the spiders move though, they do a ton of damage considering how many there are.

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Finally starting to play. Cane sword and giant gun, thank you very much.

Though, is it just me or are red blood stains not working at all? I'm not seeing any Specters when I select one

basically mate, you allowed him to perform his buff. There's a point in the fight where he'll stop and charge up, allowing you to get a few hits in. The problem here is that the buff will make it impossible to shoot him, parry or land vis attacks.

To mitigate this, when you see the animation where he stops and starts glowing, land a charged attack behind him. This will stagger him out of buffing if done quickly enough and open him up to a backstab.

You should be able to parry him to your hearts content afterwards.

Don't lock on. run in, hit 2 times, roll the fuck out. Rinse and repeat. Bolt paper makes this fight go past laughably quick.

I see. Thanks a lot, comrade! I'm going to keep this in mind and try him again after a wee bit of farming :)

Really struggling with Shadows of
Yenhem. They move incredibly fast and when you get by the time I have one down and the other two close they start summoning screen filling snakes that fuck you over. Does insight make bosses harder? I do have 22 stored

What level are you? Do you want help?

Question about the Forbidden Woods bug:

When I was fumbling through my quick items I accidentally rang my small resonant bell. However, nobody joined my game for multiplayer. Will this still trigger the bug? I didn't read about the bug until just now. :(

That second boss in the cursed chalice was a pain in the butt! I had to go farm to refill my health vials a couple of times. A lot of those attacks would just one shot me.

Bad doggy!

60, and thanks but I'm trying to beat the bosses on my own. Summoning never working for me has made me think I might as well do my best to go solo.

I think I'm just getting frustrated because of how long it takes to get to the forest boss.

Boss R
om
+ Ludwig's Holy Blade 2H R2 = Dead. The adds weren't that bad actually, though did take me 2 tries. Honestly the
Spiders
from Dark Souls 2 were more annoying then these adds. Only difference between the Adds & those from DkS2 was that the Adds could 1 or 2 shot kill you easily. But they are slow and easy to run by for most part. I just mostly ignored them, and killed off a few at a time to help make getting to boss little easier.

In Lost Woods, how do I get that item near a broken tree bridge? It's right above where you get part of the Graveguard set. I assume that's the rest of the armor set. Can't figure out how to get there for the life of me.

yeah that is the graveguard mask. it's really difficult trying to give directions but keep following the path down along the lanterns. when you get to a crossroad with a fire in the middle (there will be 3-4 small snake enemies and 1 of the larger, spitting ones), turn left and look for a place where you can jump to the other side. sorry it's so vague.

That's exactly what I did. I used Tonitrus (the bolt mace) and picked off the ones at the edge of the group to avoid gang attacks. Once they were down the big guy was much easier. Beat him second try that way. Used Ludwig on the big guy too, better reach.

Spoilers kept to a minimum with source.

There's an elevator that leads down to Ebrietas and it's the only way to her. The game can just decide to place the elevator back the way it was. The lever says "does not function" when you try to raise it, too. I managed to jump down and hit the switch that sends it back up. The drop obviously killed me (very big drop), but the elevator started to raise back up. When I went back it was still down there! You cannot avoid it. Either it will happen or it won't.
I've been backing up my saves. That might come in handy if this ends up happening, although hopefully it's one of the kinks being ironed out in the upcoming patch.

he was legit the 2nd hardest boss of the game for me, but i tend to be under-leveled in Souls games so I can coop early and midgame bosses as much as i want.

Shame they fucked the online with their bell nonsense.

I felt the same, I ran past everything but it's a long sprint.

Protip for the run back. If you have the 2 shortcuts open make sure to send the elevator back up before getting off. That way you don't have to pull the lever and wait on the next run. Saves a decent bit of time and makes the run not so bad.

Good habit to get into when doing any boss run that involves elevators actually

I'm at him now. This fight is pissing me off.

Papercuts

fired zero bullets in the orphanage.
I've only seen one boss from the main game in chalice dungeons so far, but I lol'd at it being R
om of all things.
. Room was waaay more annoying to fight in though.

I think this game was pretty good, but if I were to rank the series it would be Dark Souls, Demon Souls, Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne.

Lack of shields and magic
(actually good magic, and none to start with)
just isn't my thing. I'm not even that much of a tanky player in the other games, it's just that armor does almost nothing in this game. It's really ridiculous. Res has a minor effect but if you're getting hit you're fucking up big time due to the way the combat is designed. I think making parries depend on a resource is a mistake and bad game design. Estus Flasks were a revelation in Dark Souls, then we take a step backwards with finite healing items that you need to grind for if you hit a wall in the form of a boss. That's shitty. Amplified by the loading times.

The combat flow just isn't my thing. I like the pacing of Dark Souls(and 2), this game is designed so you should always be on the offense, however pretty much every enemy in the game has some sort of close range barrage and/or grapple if you're too aggressive, so then you have to rely on the dash mechanic which has some frames of invicibility and I just don't like this. It doesn't feel good. There's no response visually or aurally to let you know you successfully evaded so you constantly have to monitor your health in situations where enemies are chaining attacks, you also have to keep your range in check at all times to make sure you can heal if necessary, and keep your stamina in check so you can actually dodge or gtfo if an enemy has some kind of area attack. The camera can be goddamn awful at times, especially during some boss fights, enemies with dash attacks you have to dodge usually ends up with the camera whipping around in weird ways if you're locked on to them so you don't know what the hell is going on.

I tried one chalice dungeon during the game, it was a mish mash of various rooms and enemies with no consistent theme really, didn't get anything good out of it.

There are good elements, the world, if a bit too dark is amazingly designed. Weapons feel good, though there isn't enough variety through regular play,
I think you're getting around 4 weapons per specialization, str or skill.
Maybe you can find some new gear in the chalice dungeons but the game never made that readily apparent so I didn't bother. I found one weapon
with an element by default through the course of normal play during the game
and I only really skipped 1-2 areas I think. The graphics are great, some weird hitching and atrocious load times though. The lore and creepy atmosphere is great, the weird cries and hearing enemies talk to themselves if you sneak up is pretty awesome. Most of the armor sets found through the main game just seem to be various coats and jackets, pants, I found two sets that were clothy caster-like gear. It looks good but the stuff I found was really boring. Yay a new plain black hat.

The game is hard but not crazy hard. Bang your head against a wall enough and you'll beat whatever you're fighting, you can also summon others for help which trivializes some fights if your helper knows what they're at. There were about 3 bosses I needed advice on how to beat, they seem fairly unbalanced if you don't take the specific steps necessary to kill them, and nothing about the game makes these actions readily apparent. For instance,
locking onto Blood Starved Beast is a bad move. Which is bizarre when you consider the game is built around this lock-on dodge mechanic. Micolash is the exact opposite, you need to forward dash through his aoe attack or you take insane damage from any range.
The last boss was pretty obvious but a pain in the ass, you have to
gun-parry his attacks or he will fuck you up big time
, a tactic that isn't necessary for any other boss in the game(that I encountered). Most of the bosses you can beat how you normally did in past souls games, study attack patterns, look for openings, stab stab, roll out, repeat. The hardest part of the game I found was at the start of the last area, what they throw out at you is pretty insane, and the best tactic is to just run past everything. This works in a few areas, where monsters are too strong if you follow normal progression, or the guantlet they set up for you is too tedius, you can just say fuck it and bolt.

Even with a lot of negatives listed above, there is a lot to like, it will be interesting to see all the stuff I missed and if that has any impact on my enjoyment of the game going forward.

If I missed a spoiler tag that should be there somewhere let me know.

Is the online mode busted in this game or something? I tried to summon someone today for the first time and I just keep getting a network error and getting kicked to the tittle screen, tried three times and nothing.. I don't want to waste all my insight

Honestly, why the elevators don't just reset is beyond me. It's obvious that you'll need to use them again. In no situation (unless I beat the boss) do I want it where it ended up. Such needless busy work.

I'm in the forbidden forest and wtf. I'm so lost it's not funny. I saw the boss area but can't figure out how to get to it, and now there a little blue
alien looking guys with laser beams..

good ol' Souls tradition. they kinda do that so if you forget, you end up just falling to your death in the hole lol

I missed Upper Cathedral Ward and Forsaken Castle Cainhurst on my first run.

I tried not to look up too much info online, so at least I'll have something to look forward to on my second run.

Finally got it after looking for a place to jump to. Thanks!

Now to scoop whatever loot is in that poison cave...

I was lost there for quite awhile too.
If I'm remembering correctly, you want to head through the mud swamp where there's a pig not far from the alien dudes which'll take you to a road up to the boss. You might need to drop down from somewhere. Backtrack another fork in the road behind you and you'll unlock a shortcut that lets you sprint to the boss by just sticking to the right from the last lamp, again dropping down a few places.

Last boss of Ailing Loran Chalice
Abhorrent Beast
is actually the first boss I'm having trouble with in this game. Any tips? It seems I can only get 1 hit in between his hits, and I still get hit sometimes.

What's the name of the key to get past that locked door to that place with the wheelchair gunners above the Ward? I've been all around but don't see any key to buy or anything
