Another terrible game.
Use a guide. It vastly improved my experience.
Thanks for the tip. Which guide did you use?
I am yet to play my copy of this game, and I fear that I'm going to have a horrible experience, just as I've thus far had with Super Metroid and LTTP. I should queue up a guide for this game up front.

Playing it with the official, zany guide is the only right way to play it.
Wow uh, mother 3's soundtrack is probably my favourite soundtrack in a game ever. The volume is ridiculous and I have no idea what kind of voodoo magic they used to make the GBA sound so clean.Basically this. I absolutely loved Earthbound for its music, charm and dark themes behind a lighthearted aesthetic. The characters / stereotypes for how Japan saw America were also quite awesome.
I played Mother 3 after and was left with... sub par music but again, great characters and a great story. The battle system was great too (adding rhythm to do more damage). To each their own, I guess.
Edit: To me, I should add that music is a huge deal for me in games. If it doesn't have a memorable soundtrack (or other elements to at least make up for a memorable soundtrack) then I will generally forget about the game quickly.
Generally, titles with a memorable soundtrack have been games I've been more willing to replay years down the roads. One that haven't? I'll end up playing once and likely never go back to them.

On top of that, both the new songs and reverse old remixes were great and really accentuate set pieces and places, giving it some charming personality.
Monkey delivery service is probably my favourite.

Earthbound is mechanically inferior to FF IV, FF VI, Chrono Trigger, and a few others of its time, but its atmosphere and setting make it stand out from other RPGs and that makes it special for many.
Had no idea about it being based on N64 Tazmily. What other stuff was salvaged? As big as a fan of mother 3 that I am, I know little about the N64 version, just the major gist of it being a 64DD game that was too ambitious. I've seen the trailer which has the DCMC theme (or rather the other way around) and read how it was supposed to be much darker due to Itoi living through a rather difficult moment in his life.I was happy that Monkey Delivery Service retained the motif from the original N64 Tazmily village theme. It got scrubbed from most other songs in the game.
tbh though Dry Guys

What other stuff was like that was reworked into mother 3?
I'm excited to finally get onto Earthbound, fooled around with it on emulators 15 years ago, but only got to Twoson. Was waiting for an official release because I know it's special and a kind gaffer gave me his CN code for it. Really excited to beat it!
I still remember the begining of Mother 3 when Flint starts attacking his neighbors when he realizes that his son has died.
You proved that your tag fits.Oh man. What did I do!?
That's the thing. I don't see no adventure, only just little quirkiness.
Is Smiles and Tears from Earthbound or Mother 3?
Glad I finished the OP and got to the spoiler for Mother 3. Damn it.
I don't think you remember that scene quite as well as you think you do.
You proved that your tag fits.
I thought the whole idea of Earthbound was that it was a parody of old JRPG games.
Instead of Knights and swords you had Bats and YoYo's.
So I got down with Happy Happy Village and the game has improved a little bit. I'll keep on playing for an hour or two longer to see where it goes.
It is pretty much the game's opening scene. But I can see why some could get upset. I've edited it.
I meanSorry.his wife.
Maybe I'm old, but measurement of appreciation for The Big Lebowski has always been best to determine if someone was in a fraternity or not. If you can steer that conversation into Fargo and Raising Arizona maybe you have someone who knows what they're talking about.Earthbound is kinda like the movie The Big Lebowski. Not in that they are in any way similar, but that can use them as a barometer to determine if someone has good taste or not.
I'm sorry to report you may have failed the test...
Yeah. To be honest I've always loved the beginning of the game.I loved Eartbound as soon as it started. The music, the retro style graphics, the DQ call backs, the modern stylings.
I never understand people saying that its a slow starter. Game hooked me pretty quickly.
Mother 3 does start at a very emotional note, however.
Yeah. To be honest I've always loved the beginning of the game.
Makes me feel alien even among Earthbound fans.
Weird. I also thought the beginning of the game is excellent. Sneaking out at night, fighting aliens. The mischievous neighborhood boy, police blocking the way. It also features a dramatic loss of someone who looked out for you, similar to Mother 3 but softened by the humor.
This is of course due to better graphics of the SNES but although Mother 1 had the better story, Mother 2 presented it better.
I think Earthbound's story gets off with a bang, but even though I really like Earthbound, I'd be lying if I didn't say that Onett is immensely tedious to actually play through. You have no special abilities and enemies do a lot of damage, making the game effectively "mash A button, hope you get lucky and don't take much too damage, else go back to heal and start all over again. Repeat x50". The game doesn't really start being 'fun' to actually play until you pick up Paula, and that's actually a fairly significant amount of time into the game. Of course, once you've teamed up with Paula, the game is great from there on it, but yeah, Earthbound's worst parts are definitely heavily front-loaded.
I disagree.Earthbound is one of those games you can get away without playing because the content is so permeated throughout gamer culture. Everyone knows what Earthbound is, the basic plot, and almost everyone has spoiled the ending for themselves on way or another. You don't have to play Earthbound to be part of Earthbound.
