So is SPLATOON really going to lock 45 single-player missions behind amiibo?

To answer your question. No, you're mistaken. Please read up more on this or watch the videos that present the context of how amiibos work in Splatoon on the official youtube channel.

Really don't get why people shit all over DLC, but when Nintendo does it under the guise of figurines, it's cool.
Because fanboys gon fanboy.

$13 for some costumes and bonus levels doesn't sound like a very good deal to me :x

1) Costumes aside I don't think it's going to be more than remix content. Which is fairly par the course for Amiibos, small additions and cosmetics.
2) I doubt they would make Splatoon Amiibos unless they had other plans for them, so it's probably a longer term investment in the figures. Of course, you may not be able to get them for a long time anyway.

Amiibos have always been nothing more than on-disk-DLC. You know, the same shit people railed EA for but are now giving Nintendo a pass because of plastic toys.

Sounds fine to me, more or less similar to how you could play unique Blue Sphere rounds by connecting non-Sonic 3 cartridges to the Sonic & Knuckled lock-on apparatus. On the other hand, I agree that Nintendo using Amiibos to relegate content as covert DLC is awful, something I don't want to be complicit with.

I really can't tell if people are legit serious about this giving Nintendo a pass thing. It's like some of us are reading entirely different threads or something...

YMMV on this but personally I think that's a good thing. Amiibo content always walks the fine line of being a fun little quirk or being glorified DLC. Buying a figure of a character you like is in a way buying a "season pass" for a character you really enjoy, and seeing that additional value be placed in smaller things like Mario Kart 8 where you get crossover costumes that they probably wouldn't have thought about without them, is a nice little bonus to have. When done well it rewards your investment in that particular character without actively diminishing players who aren't interested.

The Amiibo might not have a lot of value in Splatoon itself but just the fact that they made Amiibo of the Inklings makes me think that they already have some additional plans for them in the future, and I think that's a pretty promising thing. Hell, with the Smash Ballot, I don't think it'd be all that far fetched to say that they might have them already pegged for DLC. That way those Amiibo will probably double in function.

Should be easy to have them just add it as DLC you can buy for later on. Each "pack" would be the equivalent of an amiibo and be price at the same amount, maybe even a deal since they don't have to make a figure for you.

Have the Splatoon Amiibos really been hard to come by? I've got pre-orders for the Inkling Girl and a copy of Splatoon bundled with with the Squid Amiibo. I could still probably go and get more if I was so inclined and had no trouble obtaining these pre-orders.

ANYWAYS, Amiibos will eventually become more and more accessible. Nintendo seem to have just underestimated the popularity of their product and in doing so, created an absurdly high demand. Things will level-out in time, I'm sure.

It's both funny and sad how Nintendo went from being the best with dlc to one of the worst.
Besides Mario Kart, that is.

I don't think the amiibos are considered DLC, just extra stuff to do. In the EDGE magazine they said they will have future updates (DLC) for post launch

We don't know if the Splatoon Amiibo will be hard to find. Besides, they're just neat unlockables that don't actually affect the game. If you don't think the game is complete at $60 then wait for a sale or something.

Wait, who's giving Nintendo a pass? This entire thread was made to complain about it. Pretty much everyone is saying they're worse than regular DLC because on top of already being on the disc, they're borderline impossible to find in the first place.

Or are we just making fun of some hypothetical non-existent Nintendo fanboy strawman?

They aren't out yet, but preorders seem to be sold out everywhere (except wherever you're getting them, I guess?). We won't really know how easy they are to obtain until they officially release and we see what kind of stock are on the shelves.

$13 for costumes, levels, the promise of potentially be used in future games AND a figurine.

People (like me) like amiibos because they like figurines.

I mean, look at the Lego Dimensions thread, everybody is hyped!

People keep saying DLC like they forgot what the DL stands for.

Locking content on a disc that requires a $15-30 download key is total bullshit. In 10, 20, 30 years I will still be able to unlock the on-disc Wii U stuff with an amiibo. The endgame is the same by the path to it is completely different.

There would be a lot less amiibo bitching if they weren't so impossible to collect.

Unless I'm mistaken, I'm pretty sure it's been said that cosmetics have gameplay related perks attached to them, so the "doesn't effect gameplay" argument doesn't really work here.

Personally I'll wait until I see the effects in action, for all we know whatever effects the costumes have are negligible and nobody will ever wear them because other cosmetic items have better stats.

Amibos would be perfect if they were limited to amiibo centric games and not plastered everywhere. Figurine lovers would get their own amiibo games and Nintendo fans wouldnt have to see it in all their favorite games locking content away.

More complaining is spent on their false scarcity (shipping strikes are bullshit lies) than anything else. Gameplay use is tertiary compared to the rest.

I always though Amiibo are just toys of Nintendo characters for collectors to buy while the content are just added feature that doesn't change the way the game is played.

It's not like Nintendo is locking away playable characters like Capcom did with MvC3 and EA with ME3.

I don't know OP it sounds like it and it does seem a bit shady but I am not sure. I wasn't aware that much stuff was behind an amiibo though.

Like others have said, I think Amiibos would be okay if it was tied to one game or service and ducttaped to every game that comes out in some way.

Even as a Nintendo fan (well a bit less now a days) that's really damn funny.

Yes, this would have been the optimal solution. Nintendo needs to suck up their pride and do an amiibo-centric game. I suppose branding figures with certain games does help sell them though, but it's created the issue of minor segments of their games are now "incomplete" for the future.

I would just prefer the straight up DLC like in Smash. I'll shell out a couple bucks for some costumes but I don't want to deal with physical DLC bullshit

I'm sure there will be regular dlc and it will be reasonably priced, but ammiibos have really fucked them up.
Even if they aren't original levels, they are still locking a challenge mode behind 45$ of figurines that'll sell out.
Codename STEAM is probably the best example of this grossness.

The amiibos for Splat are stressing me out because I want the content in Splatoon, and I'm only gonna shell it out because it's a new IP and I want all I can get and to support it fully. If Nintendo didn't make these ridiculous to obtain than it wouldn't be a problem, I've been sitting on GAF and reddit for a few days now just waiting. And I already missed best buy.

Why not save the amiibo money and wait until a real Splatoon DLC arrives instead? The amiibo costumes/gear will not be crucial to the game in any way.

I think nintendo should adjust the price of their games that are going to have amiibo unlocked content like this.

Honestly this is like a litmus test for people who really do not think. There are just so many differences and the bad things about Amiibos are not the bad things about DLC and vise-versa. You have to be pretty dumb to believe it's like DLC, and honestly most don't truly believe that, but pretend for hyperbolic statements because DLC is a four letter word.

The real sleazy portion of the Splatoon Amiibos is the Squid. It's only in the 3 pack or special pack-in. No current plans so sell it seperately, so you can't do this piecemeal.

The idea was specifically not to do this in order to differentiate it from the other lines.

There were rumors that the Squid will also come included with the game (or that there will be a retail version that includes the squid), but you can take it with a grain of salt.

I got mine on Game UK. Granted they haven't actually shipped yet or anything, so time will tell. I was referring more to the fact that I've heard of other Amiibo pre-orders selling out within 2 hours, whereas these Splatoon ones seem to have hung around for a while longer.

Can't see too many of those. Probably about as rare as those Smash bundles that came with the gamecube adapter.

That's for the european versions, doesn't really look like NoA is doing it

As much as I'm hyped for Splatoon, I still can't understand why there'll be amiibo for it, like, it's not even justified.

?

They want their new IP to be more popular so here is some figures for it too. They want it to take off like other IPs.
