The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - 4K screenshots

Ewww what happened to this?

I'm going to assume that screenshot is of that hairworks tech, but since you're taking a picture of hair in motion, it's going to look weird.

Also, since the wolf is white, you wouldn't see the shine that you do on the grey wolf, at that angle.

Well, that is a still shot and the fur could be shaking as it was taken. That is probably what makes it look so disheveled.

Motion/still whatever, the poly mesh clashes something fucking shocking with the hair shader around the eyes. Doesn't blend at all.

It looks like photos wrapped around polygons. I know that's what it is, but in Witcher games it's more obvious for some reason.

Ahh gotcha I see it. Do you guys really notice the red? Is it something immediately apparent to you without having to zoom in?
I don't really notice it in games at all either really. Bloodborne is legitimately the first where I noticed it on my own without seeing others point it out. Shit's bad there.

It's not really the red that bothers me so much. It's the blur that occurs due to the color shifting. It's not a nice looking blur like a quality DoF effect. It's an IQ ruining blur.

The first clue that something has CA is that my eyes have a certain amount of difficulty focusing on the object, like they are not exactly sure where its boundaries are.

So it is being used as an AA solution or a DOF one?
It's being used as an 'artistic' choice to simulate a shitty camera lens.

Though I wouldn't be surprised if it's used to hide bad aliasing in certain titles like Bloodborne.

Exactly.

Neither. It is just shit.

Real CA in real life is a function of depth of field unless you are looking through the worst camera lens ever. You should see CA in depth of field... it should not be an effect separate from it that is applied to the whole image independent of depth.

Notice how this image from a real camera only has CA in the unfocused regions.

I personally never understood why this game's graphics are lauded by the community. Better than the previous game, definitely, better than say Skyrim... well yes but to my eyes hardly by some huge margin. I find the characters have that very 'gamey' look to them and the colour palette isn't very realistic, and also comes across like one of the old Fable games or something.

When you see the lighting in GTAV even on the last ten consoles it simply looks better to me. Here the lighting really knocks it down quite a bit. Maybe it's the style they're after, but to me it looks like a half generational leap. Still looks great and for such a huge open world game of course it's very nice, just not quite what I expect next gen to be at.

Yeah, the use of chromatic aberration or color fringing is stupid and annoying. Luckily it can be turned off from the menu without having to edit configuration files or use a third-party modification.

The unshaded grass in the attacking wolves screen also bothers me a lot. There's no self-shadowing or ambient occlusion.

They probably had to optimize the fur a bit. I can't imagine it will look as fine as it does in the GIF. Either that, or we'll have a few settings for the fur quality (ideal).
Yea, that's why I said 'a lot like that', rather than 'exactly like that'. I'll be happy if it's close.
