Disgaea 5 releasing October 6th in NA

That cover is a bit bland and empty for my taste. I think the JP covers would work in the US as well. The games are niche anyway, both are anime as hell but this one jumps out at you way more

I think I like this cover better. The clusterfucks are classic disgaea but ignoring that this looks nice and clean focusing on the new PCs.

Shame rabbit girl is barely on it though

I preferred the US cover over the European / Japanese covers when it came to Disgaea 4 as it was generally less cluttered and, stylistically speaking, pleasant to look at.

I don't mind that D5 is following up on that more "digestible" style but it's really bland in comparison.

WOOOOO. I think I already preordered at Best Buy

EDIT: Just realized I already posted in this thread. Oh well, still excited.

This is probably too early but does anyone know which company is doing the strategy guide? Doublejump did phenominal work on the early Disgaea games but the Brady Guide for D4 was...lack luster in comparison.

Focus on the ass cover, cool.

Wouldn't mind if they use the Japanese cover as the LE. I think they usually have it as the manual at least. A reversible cover will be cool too.

I imagine that they'll do a Vita version eventually, nothing about this game screams console exclusive.

There seems to be issues with the way they do graphics. D3P and D4P (PS3 ports) both have some pretty severe chugging issues when a lot of characters are on screen (like home/campaign rooms in post game). Not sure that they'd be able to port a ps4 game to Vita without it crashing in those situations. It really shouldn't be technologically infeasible though, a lot more demanding games can run on the Vita but they've showed no inclination to fix whatever it is.

I love the Disgaea games. But ever since Disgaea 1 on the PSP, I've always preferred playing them (and honestly RPGS in general) on a portable since they can be massive time sinks. This has become even more true now that I'm out of college and working full-time.

Seeing as the Vita might not be able to handle a PS4 port without drops in quality, it looks like I'm going to have to try and train myself to play Disgaea 5 on the console.

The blue of the ps4 part makes him look even more blue than needed

Didnt know people used physical guides for disgaea, really only thing I found one needs these days is just a list of what all the specialists/innocents do.

Awesome can't wait. October seems a bit far away but I think that's pretty standard. Will buy day one, gotta fund that Asagi game.

Exciting stuff also like the cover.

A quick question about the series. I've only played Disgeae 4 do the games have any continuity between them or recurring characters?

Kinda wish they would just put this on both Vita and PS4 at the same time as well as announce a D2 Vita version.

Their main problem with the home console versions is the crazy amount of DLC that's just included in the vita version. Hope it doesn't happen to 5.

Apart from Disgaea D2, there's basically only oblique references and post game cameos (though the Disgaea cast appear in the main storyline of Disgaea 2 it doesn't rely on any Disgaea knowledge) .

There is a timeline but because of remakes and additional content it gets really fuzzy at times.

There is a good chance that there will be no vita version for 5. It is inevitable that there will be a crazy amount of DLC.

Its already been "stated" that the game is unable to be put on the Vita. Now if that is true or not only time will tell...

...I know that there are many consumers who would like this. However, we are developing the game with PlayStation 4 specs, so to be honest, it's impossible to port the game to the PlayStation Vita. Porting the game without erasing a lot of features and cutting down the amount of assets would be very difficult, and of course, we do not wish to do that. I think there are people waiting for a "Return" version with all of the contents [and DLC] included, but I'm sorry, that will not happen this time. (laughs) If we were to port the game to a portable system, fans would probably have to wait for the next portable system after the Vita, but I haven't heard anything about this [system], so that would be far in the future. Disgaea 5 will have Remote Play. Do not wait for a PS Vita port, and please, play the PlayStation 4 version.

If NIS is to be believed, they cannot get D5 to run on Vita.

I'm inclined to believe them, since D4 had framerate issues on Vita, even with a fraction of the characters you can put on screen in D5.

Sorry but I am pre-ordering. I know some hate that but this is just one of those series I have to have.
I also try really hard not to pre-order things anymore but there are a few select series that have earned my total trust and have never once let me down by feeling at all ripped off from a game. Disgaea is one of them. NIS could also use the money and they rank very low on the "corporate gaming overlords" scale.

Cool, did not know Disgaea games even got retail releases. Boxart looks cool. Are they normally $59.99 at launch though?

I find this a bit hard to really believe mainly due to 2D sprites and simplified 3D elements when there's far more demanding games on the vita out there.
Maybe the 30% memory boost will help if that was the problem?

30% boost is not going to help. It might help to smooth some things out like the issues with D4 on the PSV a bit but for doing something where technically they are stating it is not possible to get the same game out, that 30% really does not mean anything.
Just because it is 2D sprites and 3D elements does not mean that it is not taxing on the system. If anything what it does is help give devs more breathing room, but do not see it as anything more than that honestly.

Not sure how I feel about this box art. I hate that orange blue combo.

Overly crowded box art is a perfect picture to show what Disgaea is about lol. The US art not as eye catching really. That and the balance just feels off with the MC standing to the side like that and not front and center.

Last time I played Disgaea 4 on my PS3, it really seemed like the previous ones with better textures and much better sprites. HELL They got the first 2 to run on PSP right? just what happened?

Not only are the sprites much higher res, but there is a lot more mechanics going on under the hood.

The graphical bump isn't the issue, but rather the number crunching and calculations happening behind the scenes is what is causing the Vita version of D3 to come to a halt in some instances.

Putting things to perspective, Disgaea 4 on Vita has some slowdown here and there.

PS3 maxed out at 30 characters on screen and even under certain situations there was slowdown depending on what spells / skills went off when there were a lot of units on screen.

Disgaea 5 however can have 100 on-screen units simultaneously.

If the Vita (and PS3 if a lot of effects go off at once) had framerate issues with a limit of 30 units total, it's unrealistic to think the game will have the same performance with 100 units on screen.

Those expecting a Disgaea 5 re-release on Vita may be holding out. If the Vita starts to choke on the port of a PS3 game...there's no way it could handle the PS4 Disgaea 5 without major cuts to the gameplay or a tone down in some other way be it using lower res sprites.

Visually the game wouldn't push the PS3 or Vita by any stretch. It's mainly performance related things under the games hood that is holding the game back from being doable on the PS3 or Vita.

okay. Though I wonder how much gpu the game uses and possibly helping the calculations by offloading certain sets to the gpu side. That is if they are not doing that.

I still just find it a bit hard to believe that it is impossible to run on the vita.

I like the Japanese cover more, but still don't mind the NA one. Can't wait to spend $75 on the regular edition of the game...

$75?

I'm guessing you mean the $60 and whatever the Season Pass costs?

I believe the Season Pass is 4000 yen, which to USD roughly $33.

I hope NISA doesn't plan to try and jack the price up in the US and try to push this season pass for $50 instead of the $30 or so it SHOULD be.

I still remember that $50 DLC pack that Disgaea 3 had on PS3...which was required to obtain everything. As some of the content was only available in the $50 pack and not for individual sale.

They did give out codes for that if you had everything and contacted them, which was something. Definitely not ideal though.

Was not too amused with the Japan season pass thing...
