New Oculus SDK (and CV1 specs?) Releasing Tomorrow

The new SDK was up for a short time and the improvements that come with it are major.

SDK Major Changes:
Some highlights:
  • The addition of the compositor service and texture sets.
  • The addition of layer support.
  • Removal of client-based rendering.
  • Simplification of the API.
  • Extended mode can now support mirroring, which was previously only supported by Direct mode
  • Eliminated the need for the DirectToRift.exe in Unity 4.6.3p2 and later.
  • Removed the hard dependency from the Oculus runtime. Apps now render in mono without tracking when VR isn't present.
This is one of the biggest SDK changes we've seen since they introduced direct mode. The API is significantly changed, and there are a lot of new features and bug fixes. I would expect this release to work a lot differently than the previous releases in Direct Mode/Extended Mode, but it will also take developers a while to upgrade to it. Most of the function calls have been changed, so most of the code that interfaces with the Oculus SDK has to be rewritten.

VR Coder at Oculus:
Really looking forward to tomorrow. It's going to be fun. Or a total disaster.

Is this the part where the SDK becomes stable and I can stop worrying about a bunch of bugs at CV1 launch?

  • Removed support for DX10.
  • Deprecated DX9 support, which will be removed in a future version of the SDK.
I think it's a benefit, but I'm almost surprised they're going through with it anyway

So wait, you won't be updating to work with the new SDK? Have you guys signed some sort of deal with Valve or is it just a dev resources/time issue and you've prioritized the Vive?

Well he has been working with Valve and I'm sure the deal included no longer supporting the Rift version.

Half life 2 is a direct x 9 game. Ovr no longer supports dx9.

Please do not speak for me.

More like a trend of being short and defensive with people in vr threads. It gets tiring.

Well when someone speaks for you, maybe you will not think that way. He isn't just being touchy over nothing.

As a game developer who's games get discussed on here, I can relate with the fact that companies look on here and don't like seeing certain things ( even if those things seem benign to absolutely everyone else besides them.. ).. Just CYA bro! Don't take it personally!

Edit: CoolJerk is the shit, and I have spent hours reading his posts on various sonic and VR things. He is typically a polite dude!

Valve's Vive really made me forget about the OR, incredible input, specs, made by Valve and coming this year? seems like a no brainer for a PC gamer, I hope Oculus brings their A game tomorrow

Alright. I didn't state that the speculation on a possible deal to be the truth so I didn't think it was a big deal. Like oops one post from someone who represents nothing will destroy another's rep.

I really, really like the Vive. Only part is I don't know if I'm going to have an area I can setup the lighthouse units for a proper experience with it.

This was my thinking as well. I'm sure he's been well vetted already by those he has deals with, sincerely doubt your innocuous comment would stir any sort of hive within the ranks. Seemed more reactionary than anything.

jesus christ, it was exactly this, i didnt think my comment would be taken as an offense. my phone was dying, i was in my attorney's office, so i couldn't expand. my comment wasn't trying to be rude, i even said please.

i dont have a deal with valve, nor are they asking devs to not support the rift if they support vive. those are big accusations. ovr doesnt support dx9, vive does. simple as that.

The way you stated the first post in this thread made it sound like you were just not going to support it anymore to someone who didn't know to think about which API HL2 used.

But again, I made it clear that I wasn't actually aware of anything going on in your life okie.
