When smaller no-name developer like Deck13 make better use of Nvidia techs and made the PC version for their game (Lords of the Fallen) look way better than consoles you know there is something wrong here.

CDPR is what they are now mostly because of their PC usebase that supported Witcher 1 and 2 and supported GoG. seeing CDPR not give a fuck about PC version and made a barebone version for their userbase is just baffling.

The massive downgrade from 2013 and bare-bone PC version, plus the bullshit PR from CDPR about the whole situation is really depressing.

That is German Engineering my friend ;) Thats why we say" for a better job get the germans instead of the cheaper polands" :D

I hope everyone sees that this a joke ;)

Monday is going to be very interesting, but I fear that some in this thread have pushed the downgrade too much into their minds that they won't enjoy Witcher 3 any longer. It is still a great looking game for an open-world genre, and everyone should enjoy it no matter the graphical fidelity.

You sure about this? The low shots I've seen look DRAMATICALLY worse with awful, ugly, blurry textures and just a muddy overall appearance.

Yeah, low doesn't look very good at all. But the amount of added rendering features when going up the preset chain is disappointing. All the extra things added by Crysis 3 or Metro 2033 by going to Very High for example (tesselation, per object blur, volumetric lighting, real time caustics, PADM, etc...).

This is like.. slightly higher cvar values?

Sad to see a company turn their back on the people who made them what they are.

CDPR would be nothing without PC gamers and yet we get the port treatment and a barebones one at that, shocking.

Selling souls for parity clauses one developer at a time.

Of course I could end up being completely wrong and this day one patch will be the best patch in the history of videogames but that seems rather unlikely.

If it doesn't at least add a worthwhile AA solution, I'm going to be frustrated. A PC dev shipping a game with just FXAA in 2015 is beyond a joke.

Well, I find the skin tone in the "Ultra" settings is pretty off compared to the other two.

I've posted those GIFs so many times now and nobody has really bothered to pick it apart from a technical standpoint. If they did, at least I see no posts to that effect. So let me help:

  • PS4 is the censored retail version from the Middle East. PC "Ultra" is the version reviewed by sites like Gamestar, PCGH etc.
  • PS4 has soft lighting on both Geralt and Yen. PC "Ultra" seems to have hard lighting instead and hence their skin looks flat and last gen
  • PS4 has default hair. PC "Ultra" has buggy hairworks turned on where the strands are not shaded at all
  • PS4 has far better AO than PC "Ultra". Look at the cabinet in front of Yen

Noodle on that.

Are you talking about how "fat" they look (all the negative space in the sprite is missing)? That could literally be a way how they decrease aliasing as well. I am not saying that is a good thing though.

That's what I find really strange about the foliage. It's like all the leaves and grass are glued together and really "Fat".
If you compare the foliage with the foliage here:
kWkGigE.jpg

You can see that the "fatness" has gone, and the grass is thin, allowing you to distinguish the blades of grass rather than them being stuck together.

I'm hoping that it's an effect due to something, and that they haven't baked the sprites like that.

Clearly they couldn't make the PC version look too much cooler than console's, i mean, have you seen how much this game has been advertised in these last months? Lots of events around the world, a trailer almost every day, CDPR hasn't all that money to spend on marketing, Sony and Microsoft did the marketing for this game in change of parity

rockstar delivers a second stellar PC release with a slew of graphical options that make clear differences, while CDPR has reportedly resorted to AA on/off with FXAA.

Yeah, the AO difference I noticed aswell just before you pointed it out. Someone really messed at CDPR, sending out those versions.

That might even explain the bad indoor lighting in the E3 comparison video from gamestar... hmm.

Commented video comparison of final PC version at ultra vs. Gameplay Trailer - Gamestar.de (German)

PC version is at maxium with 7490k + GTX 980 without day 1 patch

short Summary:

View distance is (way) worse
less/no Tesselation (Pause at 3:11, edge of wall for example)
way worse sky
lower LOD
low res textures in final PC build compared to trailer
Insinde buildings way worse lightning
worse water, again no tesselation
and ofc. way worse fire

The commentator says the final PC-version is a lot closer to the PS4 version then the trailers of 2014 and theres no way that could be changed with a day 1 patch.

Game looks still good, but nowhere near what has been advertised in the gameplay trailers, so in my opinion downgrade confirmed once an for all.

PS: i wonder how long this Video will be online, considering PCGH had to take down their video.
PPS: im german, so dont be rude if you find any typos or grammar errors ;)

Indoor lighting and swamp atmosphere were hit hard, but other than that, the final version is quite good, imo.

I wish they'd keep the swamp color settings as it was before. Sure it would just change when you enter the swamp and that could be weird, but I honestly don't mind that. Dark Souls does it and I have no problems with that. Makes for more diverse areas. Though I can understand why they'd choose not to do it.

Damn, low looks great! I'm going for 60fps and never looking back then.

I was just watching that youtube video comparing low vs ultra and although it's compressed heavily, there just isn't near enough difference to say that ultra is three tiers higher than low. The shadows look similar, particle effects, LOD and so on. You'd expect ultra to be absolutely wiping the floor with the low setting. It should be wowing you in comparison to low but it just isn't.

Then that is utterly disgraceful IMO. Company taking a shit on the gamers who made them successful in the first place.

Let's hope the day one patch adds it.

Well Witcher 2 didn't have any AA options either, aside from the usual post-process . Downsampling + SMAA is the way to go these days.

Parity with consoles, sim release. We had to wait 19 months for PC GTA 5.

For example Kavala is huge, every building is enterable and it's doing just fine.

And that's not the point, but how the game can be scaled by adjusting settings. Draw distance can be 500m or 12000m, it's up to you how much you want to push your hardware.
You even have a downsampling option in-game.
So they can do many flat buildings with same color roof, so can a PS2. You don't see the engine doing uniquely textured intricate stuff.

If ARMA 3 can do the above graphics and still scale out like your copter shot, then you have a point.

well everything I saw from PC in ULTRA is really disappointing so far, do they only works on consoles ? Mods will do justice to this game.

Yes it is. It's also in the Conan video

I'm saying the GIF I made is NOT from the Conan video. I'm aware that Conan's video had it too. I probably interpreted your question incorrectly. If you are asking if both videos are the same build, I have no idea. Chances are they are not, because Conan's video was captured a long time ago.

I have seen the comparison Video and I still cry and smile. Sometimes it looks amazing and sometimes I cry, because it looks so bad. Sometimes the Viewdistance and LoD is so off its not even funny. Add that to the 2D gras ,and I mean that literally , I break down in Tears, because I know it could look better. We have already seen it better.

funfact: One german Gamestar or PCGH journalist said, they had played a 2014 / 2013 build which was running real time and they agreed that the older Version looked better, but was not running that smooth. They had 8 months off optimization though. So if even the journalist say there was a running better looking PC-version, why is CD doing such a bad PRstunt and why not bring out the better stuff for PC ?

Took this from the Xbox One framerate analasys video. Look at the grass! So nice and thin! Why couldn't they put this grass everywhere and not just there?!

Ehm that is a good question, but I see sharpening here. Non the less the Grass looks finer and better as fas as I can see. YT-compression does not help though.

They could smear shit on the pc cover and still get good sales. Reviews have sold the game.
They're all lying fucks with an obvious motive. So when you hear 'no downgrade' it's all bullshit.

Enhanced Edition is strong in this one, can see lots of improvements coming later to the pc version.

If stuff like this happens through the company itself or mods I'll definitely be happier. Game still looks fantastic, but bit down after looking at all these comparisons. Really thought PC Ultra would be a step above.

Edit: That lighting in the shot above, that has to be a glitch surely. PC version from a lighting standpoint is lacking :/

If you are literally crying then you might want to address your reliance on video games graphics.

Optimisation always has its trade offs and quite frankly I think we should all be glad to have a top quality game which runs well, that's all you really need. The thickness of grass shouldn't be a sticking point.

Is Dark Souls II all over again.

Let's be fair, the downgrade is much bigger than simply grass.

Edit: See above ^

literally was meant for the 2D grass. ;)

I don't think there will be an EE for this one, Witcher 1 Enhanced Edition made because how broken was the original, Enhanced Edition for Witcher 2 was made because of the 360 version, now with Witcher 3 Simultaneous release and CDPR have another big project already in development.

and even if so I doubt I'll even care about EE a year or so later, since they just fucked up this big time, a massive downgrade then a babebone PC version with same quality assets as the console versions.

I have no fucking idea why the engine does this. Insanely aggressive texture/transparency quality LOD? Engine struggles with anisotropic filtering on foliage at a distance?

As soon as the foliage gets up in the camera's shit, it all looks really rather good. The slightest distance and it all goes to shit.

I expected that it would only be a matter of time before some developer used Skyward Sword's method of rendering things from afar (making them look as if they were painted).

It seems like a design decision rather than a technical fault.
