RED DEAD REDEMPTION came out five years ago. I still think about it.

It seems like you completely missed the point. After the defending the ranch scene and escaping to the barn, Marston realizes that he will always have somebody hunting his ass. He could have killed all the guys that were waiting for him outside in a regular gameplay segment, but the point was that he had to go down like a man for his family's sake.

I really didn't, the narrative wasn't exactly subtle about what it was trying to do. But it falls flat because, well, so what if people are coming after them? Marston killed (literally) over 600 men. He is without exaggeration the single most deadly human being of all time. Just kill these guys too. Shit kill the entirely of the feds, why not?

There's no emotional stake because there's no emotional heightening, just more of the same, which the guy can clearly handle. The game wants to be a free range western power fantasy but also wants to be a meditation on the all consuming cycle of violence. That's oil and water.

Man I still remember not really caring about the game coming out until maybe a week or two before release. I got linked to a video(I think from GAF) where it had tons of RDR gameplay in it with "Ecstasy of Gold" from Good, the Bad, and the Ugly playing over it. Sold me then and there.

I also remember the day the game out, it was pouring rain outside and I picked up Alan Wake and RDR. Played Alan wake for an hour, played RDR the rest of the night and the following days. :)

That's what I got out of it too. That scene man =[

And then after when it's raining and you see Jack staring at not only John's tombstone, but Abigail's also. The feels =[

Absolutely the game from last gen that most sticks in my mind. I think about it all the time...

Time to bust out my 360 and start playing...

I hated open world games, until I played RDR. I had a bias against it so it probably held me back from loving it as much as I should have but it was the first game that convinced me that open world was the real deal.

I have never played this game. I completely missed this one. I was hoping to hear about a remaster at E3 but if not then I'll just pick it up for my PS3.

Nice. While it looks like the X360 is the best one, having never played either of them I think wouldn't be able to see any notable difference.

Thanks.

Yeah you easily forget the resolution and aliasing after a few minutes since the game is deeply immersive. Enjoy.

It's brilliant from top down. Red Dead is as close as it gets to being able to experience a sprawling, epic TV series, homaging 3 eras of Western cinema, in a playable sandbox packed to the hilt with juicy tropes.

As trite as it sounds, there were moments where I caught myself just trotting slowly across the desert, not really playing but taking in the view. Man, I loved the game for those moments...

...having said moments ripped from under me by a screaming, whirling meat-seeking missile, showed the game did not feel the same about me.

I agree with the OP, one of my favorite games of all time. I feel like we are really seeing it's influence in the latest installments of the Witcher and Metal Gear.

The thing I most remember about RDR was the climactic mission of the epilogue ie
the duel with Agent Ross. Its technically optional. You have to actively decide to take revenge for your father. Or you can just let him fish. Nature vs Nurture etc.
I thought it was a nice engagement of the narrative with the gameplay. One instance of many.

Shit is legendary.

And that late title card
goddamn
full

I agree the un-skippable cutscenes can drag down new playthroughs, but I don't think their runtime ruins the game. Without the cutscenes the actually playable sections probably amount to a similar length to say, Vanquish, so like 4-8 hours, depending on skill and knowledge. I think that's sufficient. It's at least their finest base game.

The total play time in a single playthrough is lengthy for the genre, but it's interrupted so frequently. It has the makings of R*'s greatest game, but there are only a few chunks of the game that lets the player gets into a groove. There are also a few gameplay aspects that could be greatly improved on (and then used for RDR2)

To be perfectly honest, I feel that Red Dead Redemption was the best game that Rockstar has ever put out and it is my favorite game from last generation followed closely by Modern Warfare 2. The scope alone made me lose hours upon hours in it. I would forgo the story at times to just marvel at the landscape and just cause chaos. The online was prime, especially team deathmatch that started with a Mexican standoff. Phenomenal.

A lot of folks saying they cried at the game... I'm Welling up at the fact that the only way to play this game is on 360 or ps3...

That's totally fair enough. I disagree, I never felt the cutscenes removed me too long breaking my rhythm, but I absolutely get it. It's a problem, but it doesn't bother me.

And yeah, much as I'd like to see it, that might be too wishful thinking that the shooting of Max 3 could be featured and actually improved in the new Red Dead. I honestly doubt they'll give it the priority it needs to be on par with Max 3 with all the other aspects RD has going on, like the map, animations, horses, and whatever. However, this is the new gen, and they've had a lot of time working on this, so maybe I'm wrong about that. I hope I am.

...

Man, fuck all of you guys though, stop expressing interest in Red Dead, I want Bully 2 first, goddammit!

...

I know, I'm not getting it.

I loved Red Dead Redemption way more than I thought I would. One of my favorite games of last gen. It's makes me happy that GAF remembers it fondly but I feel not as much games media outlets really gave it it's just due.

I love this game. I've even gone back and started another playthrough a couple weeks ago. I also went online and met some people to play dice and poker with too. Its a shame the online is mostly broken now. Can't get through a single match without someone joining in, ending the game session, and returning everyone back to the lobby. Only way to avoid that is to play a private session. Hopefully, things get patched, but it probably won't happen unless they release a remaster for PS4/XB1/PC.

Best way to play for the first time is to get familiar with the western setting, if you haven't already. Watch the good the bad the ugly trilogy, then your all set.

Red Dead Redemption is easily Rockstar's best game. The atmosphere and tone is unrivalled not just by any of their other games, but by any game, period.

It's one of my top 5 games of all time, and I felt such joy inmersing myself into that world.

I'm currently playing through Dark Souls for the first time, but when I'm done, I may go back to RDR, as I haven't played it since Undead Nightmare released.

It breaks my heart that there's no PC version. I'm not even an avid PC gamer, but RDR's atnosphere could be elevated to new heights entirely.

I hope we someday see some kind of re-release or remake.

An almost perfect open world game to me. Music, animation, voice acting etc were all top notch.

It is right behind Fallout IV in terms of my most wanted.

Would love to see what they could do on PS4/XB1.

Oft hope is born when all is forlorn.
I bought this day one on PS3 and sunk it so many hours into it. It was SOOO good.

Bought it again for 360 after 2 years, was on sale for 5$ I think and played through the story again.

World design, music, gameplay, graphics, story. Everything was just spot on.

If we don't get a remake, it will truly be a shame.

It was ok, I didn't find the gameplay that much fun, the missions were pretty cut and dry and mexico was boring. I guess it is the best western game out there, if that is your thing.

Seriously they need to make a HD remastered version for PS4/XBO/PC.

Maybe they're thinking about it, but planning on releasing it a bit before the release of RDR2. (if they're planning to develop RDR2)
Probably would sell more with the hype of RDR2 announcement.

Definitely one of the most overrated games ever in my book. It's good, but man do I not understand the intensity of batshit craziness that follows this game. I think the phenomenal story gets people to overlook the game's flaws, such as bad shooting and empty environments. The entire Mexico chapter was also the biggest blow to the game's pacing, with it being inconsequencial filler.

I still want to know what playing this wrong vs right means.

Play it like a GTA game / wrong way: horses are inherently less fun than fast cars. Following the mission structure of a GTA game, meaning go to point A, do mission, rinse and repeat gets old really fast in the world of RDR

Play it like its own thing / right way: Explore the world, do missions in nonconsecutive order, immerse yourself in the game's world, do the hunting and challenge missions, play the mini games in between sessions. I did this in a more "organic" way (the way I would imagine a real hunter/cowboy would do it, and I had a fucking good time)

I never enjoyed playing this game and I never beat it, but its atmosphere is far and away the most cohesive and finely crafted I've seen in any video game I've ever played.

one of the greatest games of all time. of ALL TIME.

whenever I think about the game I always think of that villain (his name escapes me) who murders that poor banker girl in the middle of the game that he was holding hostage at gunpoint just to be fucking evil.

I'm currently plowing through my 5 year anniversary replay of the game, but it kinda saddens me that the weather and time of day during the missions will never be the same as when I first played the game. The timing of them in most missions were flawless in my first playthrough.

Perhaps the most perfectly synced moment at that time for me was at the very end when
I killed Edgar Ross in the duel
and it was heavy raining both in the game AND real life that day.

Bumping this thread because it actually is the 5 year anniversary today.

Happy Birthday to this bad boy.

Remember those random moments that happen while out and about, women in distress, I'll sort this. She stole my horse, can't believe you fell for it, rage increases, pulls out whip, noooo, pulls out gun....she rides clear over the hill, no shot. God damn it.

I never put much effort into the horse choices, were they really any better ones, think I stuck with the horse I broke early on when they taught you how to catch them first time.

I cant believe I bought this game blind on release date. I went to a mom and pop shop (they sell M rated games to teens :p) and I had like $65 bucks as leftovers from my birthday and here I was looking at a couple of used game I could buy and there I see RDR. I read about in one of my Playstation Magazines, it was described as GTA with cowboys. And that's about how much I knew about the game, so I'd say fuck it If I don't like it I'll just return it. I did not return the game. I 100% the game. I played online constantly till 2013 and I platinum-ed the game. Lets just say this is easily of the best games ever made and one of my favorites of all times.

ha, that's awesome. I experienced some of those perfect weather moments too.

RDR is easily in my top 5 favorite games. Wish they'd remaster it for current-gen a la GTA V.
