The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel is Listed on GAME Retailer

We’ve gotten wind of a potential development regarding Falcom’s The Legend of Heroes: Sen no Kiseki being localized.

The potential leak comes from European retailer GAME (thanks DM!) who listed “Trails of Cold Steel” for both Playstation 3 and Playstation Vita. Both versions are listed for October 25th of this year, but curiously under the publisher Namco [Bandai].

The name by itself appears to be a subtitle, and it is, if you’ve followed our previous coverage regarding the game.

Back in January, internet sleuths discovered that XSEED had registered a domain for “Trails of Cold Steel,” giving more legitimacy towards the game being finally localized. For now, classify this as a rumor as we await a comment from GAME Spain.

It'll be nice for English speaking fans to be closer to caught up starting with this game. Hopefully 2 can come out relatively quickly after the first game. Rumor has it that Falcom is pressuring XSEED on these releases, as they should be.

How is this going work with none of the Crossbell games localized? Not even the Liberl arc is complete yet.

SC will be out before this. 3rd is probably not coming. Crossbell games aren't important for Sen 1, although they are for Sen 2... However, you could play them after Sen 2 and still get a similar effect. Hopefully someone finds a good way to release them, but it doesn't look good with the current offerings.

I hope the rumors are true, I need both of the Sen games and Xanadu Next.

I do wonder if we're gettinf PC ports or it will stay Vita exclusive, which I wouldn't mind I just want them.

Hyped but no nearly as much as I would be if we were actually getting the rest of them instead of skipping the next 3, even if they're not closely connected...

Still, Vita at the ready!

What is this game? How does it connect to FC/SC? Haven't been following this, but I love me some Falcom goodness.

It's Sen no Kiseki, the second most recent game released in Japan. It's a new story arc separate from FC/SC, although there are plenty of callbacks. In order:

Trails in the Sky
Trails in the Sky SC
Trails in the Sky the 3rd
Zero no Kiseki
Ao no Kiseki
Sen no Kiseki <-
Sen no Kiseki 2

That is surprisingly earlier than expected if it's actually coming this year. I'm personally not too eager to jump ahead in the series, even less so if we end up not getting 3rd/Zero/Ao, but I'll probably grab the Vita version anyway, just in case. Especially if it's a physical release.

There are always the Evo ports for Crossbell if XSeed is okay with some very late Vita ports. The PC ports of Zero/Ao could've been an option but Falcom only produced a JP version for Zero PC.

Seeing as you seem to be the guru for this series, do you know if any of the currently Japan-only titles have any fan translations or English guides? I believe Zero was getting a fan translation, but 3rd being empty...):

I do want to play the games, but I'm the kind of guy who wants to play all the games in the franchise. This makes such a franchise a double-bind for me.

The Evo versions are complicated because there's additional companies involved. Pyramid and Chara-Ani.

Really looking forward to playing this. Day one. I'm not a HUGE fan of the 3D graphics

Now that my Japanese is up to snuff I really need to catch up with this series. Never finished FC on PSP so I'll start again when the Vita edition releases next month. Hopefully Aeana can explain, but how come these games take so long to localise?

Hopefully XSEED clarifies whether they're going to skip Zero/Ao or not, which sadly seems likely based on what Tom said before. If so I may just import them since they're fully voiced and use the walkthroughs that are on GameFAQs.

If that's the case, would that be as to why they partnered with TitS SC? And potentially with Namco Bandai here (considering it is says they're publishing in EU as well as that Namco Bandai has published the previous PSP titles)

I'd rather XSEED takes the time to do the series justice than to rush the releases out in order to please Falcom. Especially so when taking into account that TitS1 and 2 burnt out a couple people as it is.

However, if the listing is correct they seem to have some kind of collaboration with Namco going on, which might help them the localization process.

Old but relevant. This was made when Zero was the newest IIRC.

I'm guessing what's going to happen is SC comes out soon, Trails of Cold Steel comes out in the end of the year or early next year. Then after that, they go for Trails of Cold Steel 2. I wouldn't expect 3rd, Zero, or Ao unless SC does especially well.

If they don't please Falcom, then they'd probably lose their partnership with them. The amount of time SC has taken is basically insane, and there's no way anybody involved is pleased with that.

Isn't there also going to be a Sen no Kiseki 3?

The scripts are insanely big. FC alone dwarfs FFXII and that's not even the largest script in the series.

But it is possible? Dealing with another company could be better in the end, if they can get some things that they can't with Falcom, like JP voice acting.

Anyway, I bought Zero and Ao Evo games from a gaffer, and will buy FC Evo and get all those trophies again.

Tom said himself that it's very unlikely that the Evo versions will be brought over because of the voice acting rights and all that.

Given how long it's taken to get SC out the door, how on earth is XSEED able to potentially put out Cold Steel at the end of the year? Does it have substantially less text, or has Carpe Fulgur been working on this after their work on SC concluded a while back, or...?

From what it sounds like, the actual translation of SC was finished a while back, and it was in the editing phase for the last good while, and now it's in QA. So during that time, the translators involved were not tied down.
