We are always interested in getting to know more people with the same hobby. If you share our love for Indies, let us know! We talk about anything Indie, want to talk about the block design in Braid? The character design in FEZ? Need recommendations? This is the right spot to ask! We'd also love to read more impressions :)

| 3.5 Quick Note about Formatting |
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
If you want to suggest a game that has recently released or that looks interesting, but hasnt released yet, please follow the following formatting structure so the post is picked up by Toma-Bot:
Released games:
TITLE - PRICE (PLAT)
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Not yet released games:
TITLE - PLAT
LINK
DESCRIPTION TEXT
Copy the appropriate content and add the proper information for the black writing. Please only include 1 link and 1 image. I tried making it a bit failsafe, so it should be able to deal with 2 links or images as well, but 1 is safer.
If the game is free, then put "Free" as the price, otherwise please use $ or € for the price. You can also include more than one game per post (like the Screenshot saturday posts), but please stick to the above format for every entry.
If someone posts a non-proper formatted post, I'd appreciate if you could repost the game with the same info in the proper format.
I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.
This is a monthly podcast series that presents notable Indie Game soundtracks. A likeable host and guests, a fantastic track selection, interesting discussions and a focus for Indies will make this one a mainstay in my monthly threads.
Episode 11: Episode 11: Summer Girls
[Wolfenstien | Elysian Shadows | Trials Fusion | Fract OSC | Out There | Parappa the Rapper]
GAF Thread: Freeware Games
Which is a shame, because so many free games are out there and so many are just really good games that a large majority of people will never play. From developers with large portfolios of freeware games, to free alphas and betas, to the hundreds and hundreds of entries for game jams such as Seven Day Roguelike, Seven Day FPS, Ludum Dare, and others, to the talented work of Digipen students, there's just an astounding amount of quality free games to play and enjoy.
Overtaken by curiosity, researchers delve deeper and deeper into the unknown, only to find what we think we understand about the cosmos, is terribly incorrect. The research and experiments reach a tipping point, specimens begin to escape, and researchers scramble to leave the secret base. Most leave unscathed, while others lose their lives in an attempt to flee from the deadly forces that lie within. In the panic, fear, and confusion of countless emergency distress signal codes, help is requested. The distress signal is unintentionally received by the government's haz-mat cleanup division. A small team of three is sent to carry out what they believe to be a simple routine clean-up. They are sorely mistaken.
I guess expect a Steam release sometime after the summer sale (which technically could mean months after the summer sale so I'm covered :p).
Oh, and anyone who buys it on itch.io will naturally get a Steam key when it gets on Steam.
Great work again.
Just a quickie- is Sorcery available as a PC/ Mac release? Seems to be mobile/ Kindle only from the website. Or have I missed something?
Everything I get when I search for "Sorcery PC" is a reddit thread on how you can't play Sorcery on PC. :p
Sorry, copypasting error :p
Holy shit, nice thread. I'll be watching this closely.
Your threads are my favorite thing on GAF. I want to play everything, indies are truly awesome <3
Thanks! Post some impressions or feel free to participate in any discussion, guys ;) We would love to read more people in here.
New thread! Looking at what released, last month was crazy
My wishlist for the Summer Sale is huge. Mainly looking at Axiom Verge, Vagante, The Talos Principle, Steredenn, and Toren
And this month, I believe SuperHOT is releasing
And Rain World is going to be at E3 with a new build, so a new backer build should be coming soon
And We Happy Few is hitting Kickstarter this week
And Door Kickers is likely coming to iPad this month
So yeah June is going to be awesome
Thanks again Toma - as always fantastic work!!!
What's the indie thread record for the most released(ones someone is interested enough in anyway) indies listed in one month 70++ this month.
So a little LTTP, but Ori and the Blind Forest...
Easily the most gorgeous 2D platformer I've played. Every area is potential wallpaper material. The animations are so fluid, so smooth, and responsive, and I always think of Rain World when I'm leaping around as a cute little white creature. I was surprised that it was a metroidvania too, of course that only added to my enjoyment of exploring this world.
So nice to see Environmental Station Alpha at the top of the best of April list. Almost no one replied in the OT, so I was under the impression it was either gonna be overlooked or under appreciated, and I'm happy to be proven wrong.
Awesome thread as always, Toma.
Well you know how GAF can be. Pixel art + another metroidvania = dismissive responses
Pretty sure almost everyone had the game on their voting list last month. Some games really dont get any attention in their individual threads. Thats sort of the whole idea of these threads, as we dont forget about these games and archive them here :) Since the thread is usually active all month, good threads tend to end up on top.
(with some minor exceptions, all of you should try the Siralim demo!)
Nobody played that last month, go catch up on that, guys.
I actually think there's a fair amount of Metroidvania fans in here, which is why it surprised me to find the ESA thread almost empty. Maybe Ori/Axiom Verge stole its thunder, but it really isn't something that should be overlooked, especially by genre fans.
Actually I don't think Axiom Verge got that much attention either, relatively speaking.
Thanks for mentioning ESA. It has shot to the top of my Summer Sale wishlist.
I thought it would do better after seeing how well Ori did on PC, but I guess making it look like a PS exclusive hurt.
Need to check out some of the free stuff on the list, but here are impressions of the paid stuff I've played so far. Can't wait for the Sale this month
Invisible Inc
With Mark of the Ninja, Klei made a game that I consider to be part of the ultimate triumvirate of the stealth genre (with Splinter Cell Chaos Theory and Hitman: Blood Money), and Invisible Inc only cements them as masters of the genre. Mixing tactical strategy with nail-biting infiltration, Invisible Inc is always tense and always rewarding. Every move is both a opportunity to outmaneuver enemies, subvert defenses, and acquire funds and new gear, and a closer step towards discovery and greater challenge, as the alarm creeps inevitably upwards. Ghosting a level, dodging high tech security, or reaching the elevator with an entire alerted complex hot on your heels is equally exhilarating. If you like stealth, real stealth where a mistake is costly and you can't break out an assault rifle if things go south, and like turn based strategy, you can't wrong with Invisible Inc
Not a Hero
Cover based shooting by way of Hotline Miami. That's a good way to describe Not A Hero. Take the rhythmic murder of Hotline Miami and combine it with sliding, cover-based action and you get this game's wild bloody gameplay. Cleaning up the city with a band of misfits and a crazy "Mad-Lib"-bing anthropomorphic rabbit from the future is your task here and it's one hell of fun humorous ride. While the gameplay is kind of repetitive, the fun comes from timing your slides and cover and reloads and special skills to string together fluid chains of tackles, headshots, executions, and reloads. It's so satisfying, very much in the vein of pulling off perfect lines in Roll7's OlliOlli
Badland
Only played this on IOS, so while the GOTY version revamps all the levels and adds more movement mechanics, the general framework and gameplay is still the same. Badland surprised me by taking a relatively simple mechanic - hold to rise, release to descend - and crafting myriad challenges around it. Forget the days of Helicopter's simple dodging. Here you're deftly evading sawblades, splitting up and sacrificing packs of clones to clear debris and open pressure-sensitive gates, avoiding deadly lasers, manipulating weird machines, collecting power-ups that reverse your gravity or slow time or make your flying furballs stick to surfaces. The sheer variety of hazards and physics-based puzzles, all designed around a simple core mechanics and presented in an atmospheric art style, makes Badland well worth checking out. I imagine the added movement controls on PC and consoles make the game even more fun
OMG, this is brilliant.
Ice Caves of Europa - 2016 (PC, Mac, Linux)
http://forums.tigsource.com/index.php?topic=47258.0
Ice Caves of Europa is a science-fiction, cave-exploration game set in Jupiter's moon, Europa.
In the near future, a comet smashes into Europa, shattering the ice crust near Thera Macula and revealing the liquid water beneath. You play the Dragonfly, a robotic rover whose mission is to explore the caves beneath the surface for signs of life.
Tombeaux - 2016
https://tombeauxgame.wordpress.com/
Tombeaux is a game that explores the convergence between cultures and the environment across a few hundred years of midwestern American history, taking place on a small section of the St. Croix River. Through exploration, the player discovers new objects, eras, environments, and narratives, all of which cause reflection upon our history and our future.
What if instead of direction and shooting, we tried to give the player indipendent control over two distinct entities simultaneously?
Internally named “Stick Dancing”, the system allows the player to control 2 spaceships at the same time, piloted by the genetically created twins Akai and Aoi, in a mission to liberate Earth from an alien invasion.
Sorry, was busy playing :p
I just played it 6 hours straight, about 3 hours of which were being stuck on level 7 and trying to figure out how to approach it. This game is similarly ZEN like Zachtronics other games, which is great. It basically is SpaceChem with a more rudimentary Interface and mostly focussed on maths and simple logic circuits. It is also much closer to SpaceChem than Infinifactory in how solving each puzzle would be pretty easy if you had unlimited Space/Reactors, but you mostly need to work around the limitations given by the game.
There is one caveat to it though: It is hard. As I said, I am stuck for 3 hours on level 7, and while this game simply ate away my time like it was candy, the difficulty curve is likely much less forgiving than it was in the other games. I really appreciate that, as I thought Infinifactory was always too easy, but just as a fair warning.
Great stuff. Looking forward to breaking my head over this tomorrow again.
Awesome thread as always, Toma. I didn't post a ton in the last one since I hadn't been playing a lot of new stuff, but I've still been lurking and appreciating the more topical posts of everyone else.
On that note I've still been digging into a lot of indie stuff, and since I feel like I'm not contributing anything to these threads I figured I'd post some impressions (though if you'd rather I didn't post about older stuff let me know):
Fract OSC
Played this over the weekend and was completely in love. I was already a fan of EDM and have dabbled in making electronic music in the past, so this was an absolute delight to go through, and one of the better paced first-person exploration puzzle games I've played (we need a better term for stuff like this). Also found it surprisingly powerful, though I've been unable to describe exactly how I felt about it. Highly recommend if you haven't checked it out yet. Full Review
Domestic Dog Simulator
Booted this up on a whim and...yeah, it's not great. Super limited and kind of disturbing; it's more or less the simplest of illustrations regarding video games and their history with capitalism. Not really sure I got anything out of it aside from a pretentious review, but I guess that's about all I expected. On a side note the developer's other game, Squirreltopia, is actually sort of endearing (and I'm not saying that just because of the squirrels, though they certainly help). Full Review
Dreaming Sarah
This was a big surprise for me; a wonderfully eerie adventure platformer. I loved how it incorporated a lot of distinctly video game trappings (the sound effects might be the most obvious) but then used them in very untraditional ways to match its bizarre world. Definitely worth looking into if you're a fan of the surreal Full Review
Rain, House, Eternity + other Kitty Horrorshow games
For whatever reason I decided to play this one night and enjoyed it so much I ended up going through the developer's (Kitty Horrorshow) whole collection of games and finding almost all of them to be fantastic. That eventually led to this piece about how I enjoyed the interconnected nature of her games and how I appreciated them more in the context of each other. Feel free to give it a read or not; either way I'd definitely check her games out if you're into arthouse games Piece
Jenny LeClue - Playable Teaser
This one is actually recent, though it's only a demo. I'd been super excited for this game to release since it was Kickstarted what feels like ages ago, and the demo was basically everything I'd hoped it would be. Not really too much to say about it other than go check it out, it's about half an hour long but totally worth it I did say some stuff about it though if you're curious.
Nihilumbra
Expected to be into this, but it just didn't click with me. The narrative was overbearing and the puzzles too simplistic. On the plus side it's a very pretty game, I just wish the art was being used for a better game. Might still be worth looking into since a lot of other people seemed to have been into it, but it definitely wasn't my cup of tea Full Review
Life Goes On
I've seen no one talking about this (or back when it released) and that's too bad because it's actually pretty cool. I've been pretty burnt out on puzzle platformers lately but LGO has a really great hook (that gave me pause to think about how I view death in other games, and I always find things that start these discussions worthy of note), the difficulty curve is super smooth, and it ends just when you want it too (too many platformers go on far too long for my liking). Give it a shot if you aren't turned off by its morbid nature (which actually isn't as bad as I had feared; it's very cartoony and humorous). Full Review
I suppose that's mostly it. Have had surprisingly good luck for the most part picking games from my disturbingly large backlog to try, which is a nice change given I'd been playing a lot of shovelware prior to that. Will hopefully get around to playing some of the newer stuff from the OP and try to post some impressions.
EDIT: EEP! Sorry about the wall of text. Didn't think it would be this long.
Stuff gets overlooked or forgotten about due to newer releases, so impressions are always welcome.
Wow oh wow, this is going to be a good month!
Kerbal Space Program
I've played KSP for nearly 300 hours. It's not a game that everyone will enjoy, and has a fairly high learning curve, but if a rocket building and flying game sounds like something that might interest you, then I cannot recommend this highly enough.
Royals
A simple but good single player turn based strategy game where half the fun is in discovering how it all works. You have a number of stats which you look to improve by visiting various locations on the map, one per year, with your goal being to become the king, queen or royal of the land before you die. There are lots of little nuances which I won't spoil, but which I very much enjoyed. Can be frustrating until you fully understand the way everything works together.
Snakebird
When someone recommended this game to me I boldly claimed I would finish it in two or three hours. It only has 50 or so levels, after all! As I write this I'm simultaneously stuck on six or so different levels, even though most of the levels look shockingly simple. The game is very challenging, but not due to being overly complicated, as is the way for a lot of other puzzle games. It feels a bit like mate-in-X chess puzzles, where there might only be six pieces on the board, each with very simple movement rules, but together it makes for a challenging problem. Highly recommended for those that like puzzle games, and worth trying for those that don't.
I'm going to steal Toma's system, I hope you don't mind!
After browsing this thread and the above-linked 2013 and 2014 threads, I was forced to re-evaluate my gaming preferences. I thought that indies were okay, but sort of background noise, but after going through that list, I realized that indies have made up the bulk of my gaming time in recent years and have provided the most satisfying experiences.
I'm looking forward to trying the many recommended games that I missed. Divinity: Original Sin and Shadowrun are first on the list. I just need to finish Rogue Legacy first.
haha alright, this is just me being overly concerned with imaginary rules that I seem to assume exist in every thread despite having no cause to. It's actually fairly odd when I think about it.
I didn't know if I'd care for KSP at all, but I randomly won it in a giveaway and ended up enjoying it quite a bit. Granted I've only played it for a few hours, but I'm definitely interested in getting back to it. It's like super advanced Lego.
I've seen this being brought up a lot (sadly mostly to compare its lack of coverage to that of a certain other game). I'm strapped for cash at the moment, but will definitely look to pick it up sometime soon. I haven't played a straight up puzzle game in a while and by all accounts this is one of the better ones to be released lately (which of course makes it even more depressing seemingly no one played it, but that goes for a lot of games =/ ).
Toma, I just noticed that the OP says "Voting Results, Best of April"
Cool! Yeah, kind of the same thing happened to me a few years ago. I had been pretty much 100% consoles for most of my life, except for the occasional flash game or freeware game. But then I got into PC gaming, mainly indies, and now that's basically all I play.
It's literally an endless thriving section of gaming. I find something new every day and that's not hyperbole
If you like roguelike platformers, Catacomb Kids, Vagante, and of course Spelunky should be right up your alley
(which of course makes it even more depressing seemingly no one played it, but that goes for a lot of games in these threads =/ ).
Fixed that for you ;)
Occasionally something will take off, like Besiege. But it's still baffling that a universally praised game like Factorio has only had 84,846 sales so far
I've actually played a whole load of stuff from the OP already! It's voting time!
Axiom Verge
I haven't played as much of this as I would like given my work life and The Witcher 3 came out. Having said that it's a pretty damn good take on the "metroidvania" formula with a great retro aesthetic and responsive controls. It's not as fluid, or as attractive, as Ori but it's trying to be a little truer to the genre's roots both aesthetically and mechanically.
Crosscode
I played this a while back (before Early Access) and it's great. I played it the same month as Secrets of Grindania and while it's not as good as that, it's a great, fast paced bullet hell come RPG and even in demo form it was good fun, so I can only imagine the early access version is even better.
Flame Over
I didn't play this, but Pylon_Trooper did:
Even in a month where the Vita line-up touts Hotline Miami sequels, the magnificent Helldivers and enigmatic gear like Oreshika, Flame Over demands a spot in the playlist. Featuring tight controls, whimsical audio-visuals that belie a ruthless-but-fair set of game systems and a minute cost of entry, there remains little to say but get it while it’s hot.
Hot Date
Weird. Very weird and pretty funny. A game where you try to romance a bunch of pugs on an evening of speed dating. I'm about as good at this as I would be on an actual speed dating evening.
Invisible Inc
Yeah this is legit good. It's a roguelike come strategy game where you're tasked with infiltrating randomly generated corporations to find or hack targets and escape as unharmed as you can manage. It's a load of fun and, on the higher difficulties, really tough.
Serpent in the Staglands
I played the demo, loved it and just bought the whole thing last night on GoG. It's extremely hardcore; the game doesn't come with overblown in game tutorials, you need to pay attention, write your own notes and learn. You need to learn how magic works, what the spells do, where you are on the map (if you can find one) and where that relates to other places in the Staglands. In a post Pillars and Witcher 3 world I think I might be enjoying this more than both; certainly more than Pillars.
Haven't seen it mentioned but Shape of The World looks lovely. There's a GAF thread here too: http://neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=1055206
Shape of the World - (PC, Xbox One)
tumblr_np9qbvR2e11u3oerno6_400.gif
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/hollowtree/shape-of-the-world
Shape of the World is an exploration game where a rich and colorful world grows around you. Your presence is the driving force behind the procedurally populated environment as you establish permanent monuments to mark your journey.
Shape of the World builds on the ideas of experiential games like Journey, Flower and Proteus where health hearts and kill points don’t enter the equation. It’s an evolving world that grows with each step and hints at distant landmarks, encouraging you to dive deeper into the woods. Shape of the World offers a unique unfolding experience for those seeking an alternative to quest-driven adventure games.
Damn, I didn't think logic programming could be more brutal after Spacechem but they've managed it with TIS-100.
Yep, even though I really like it, its not going to be a better game than SpaceChem or Infinifactory due to that and accessibility reasons. This is basically distilling SpaceChem style logic programming to the core and not wasting any time with niceties.
Heh, I remember when you posted impressions of the first alpha, saying it was pretty much a tech demo with a lot of potential
No time for lengthy impressions, but it doesn't have much content yet, so it's hardly recommendable over a full game, but I am very impressed with the systems, style and polish already at work here. This game will turn out amazing, you can tell that just from this small tech demo, so you really should take them up on the 2 keys for a small price over eventually, even if it's not worth getting it now immediately.
