13 Days of E3 - Day 5: Sony 2006

I don't think I ever watched this one live, the later ones I did back when all the streaming sites would die during the conference and you have to jump between them

The Eye of Judgement is an amazing game. The cards were too expensive and were too hard to find though.

I actually bought Afrika. The graphics are really nothing special, but the load times are incredible. The load times in Bloodborne are nothing compared to that. And the save files are humongous. Maybe I'm saving the DNA of all those animals. Who knows.

I've also imported (and platinumed) Aquanaut's Holiday. Weirder, but no big load times.

And yes, I have Genji: Days of the Blade, but I don't think I've ever opened the box.
I didn't know that was the giant crab game.

I honestly think Eye of Judgement came out at the wrong time because AR is quite a big deal now. I dare say it was ahead of the time.

I would imagine it would be cheaper to produce now, too.

It's interesting how people would react to it now. Back then it reminded everyone of Yu-gi-oh but it's not like the general public remembers Yu-gi-oh any more.

It was such a terrible show for Sony. Some shows that got close to it:
- Nintendo 2008 - wii music
- Konami 2010 - wan mirrion twoops (extreeeeeme!), luchadores, silent hill stare, etc
- Microsoft 2013 - always online

Konami 2010 was at least entertaining (so bad so good).

the microsoft 2013 show regarding always online was their may showing. e3 2013 was microsoft just showing off games and announcing a price for the platform. i think it was a better show than sony's that year, pricing aside.

the one that interests me is sega 2000. i don't know if there's any video of it, but from what i understand it was as though they knew they were the dead man walking, but gave no fucks and decided to have a great showing anyway.

This is the first E3 I watched, surprised I still remember it. I had owned a PS1, PS2 and was excited for whatever sony had next but.. this conference made me end up getting an Xbox 360.

Which I regretted later once I found Final Fantasy versus XIII was a PS3 exclusive.. almost ended up buying one of those expensive PS3s just for that back then. Glad I didn't though given recent developments with it becoming XV and all. (ffs, hard to believe it's been 9 years already)

Funny how it's kinda the opposite now with Microsoft's Xbox One reveal turning me away from them.

Still baffling to me that people hold this up as one of the bad conferences, the actual game content was arguably among the best we've ever gotten out of a press conference in any E3 ever.

In my opinion, most of Nintendo's shows since 2007 have been far less interesting barring a Zelda/Mario console unveil.

sony's conferences, pretty much all that i can recall, are bloated and have shitty pacing. i actually don't need to see a trailer for every game that is coming to the platform over the next year. there never seems to be a central message or vision. it's like, 'well, here's all the shit we've been working on. enjoy the next several hours of pretty much the same kinds of games that are also coming out on other platforms.' (this particular part is a criticism of their most recent shows and not 2006 in particular).

2006 was before the iDevice craze. While iDevices are still viewed as being more important than "video game toys", the prices of iDevices have caused the prices of other tech items to be viewed by some as not that expensive. A system costing $600 now would get a lot of criticism but I highly doubt it would be as much as the what the PS3 got back in 2006.

Pretty much this. And console prices essentially doubled with that $599 price tag. The PS2 and Xbox were $299 when they were released, back when console makers stuck to one SKU.

Which is why singling out this one feels s weird. At least a lot of the trailers were for new and compelling content even if it was littered with boring bullshit same as every year. And the stage shows actually worked, which is more than what could be said for Sony's 2013 showing. Honestly, people seemed to like that one but content wise they showed almost nothing exclusive and they kept hitting technical errors throughout the show, I thought it was pretty shitty.

the context for this was that the 360 was a pit stop on the way to next gen, that $400 was too much for a video game console, that two skus was a dumb idea, and that sony would blow them out of the water with the new playstation. after all, their showing at e3 2005 was clearly indicative of where things were going.

the ps3 reveal, aside from being mindnumbingly boring aside from the mgs iv and ffxiii trailers, was the sudden realization that the 360 wasn't the sad second attempt from a new company that didn't quite get it. it was that this is what gaming was now.

oh and as an aside, the revelation of the sixaxis was goofy as hell. kutaragi pulls out a damn dual shock controller in 2006 and acts like it's an ipad in 2006.

Amazing they managed to turn it all around. 2009's overhaul to the Slim and the rebranding that came with it cannot be overstated for how it righted the sinking ship.

Oh god I remember how dumbfounded everybody was. Ken held it up, proclaiming it innovatory, waited for applause... and nobody clapped. Silence, dead silence and utter shock.

Truly a train wreck to remember. If it weren't for the reliability issues of the 360 early into that gen I would have jumped ship to Microsoft.

Like others have said, Sony have done an incredible job for the PS3 to sell as well as it did. That E3 conference was pretty bad, but it did give us memes that we laugh at even to this day XD

this conference killed my inner Sony fanboy and allowed me to grow into a better person

E3 2006 was the first time I actually realized that only the quality of the games mattered

and I'm so much better off for it

thank you Sony for bungling that E3 so spectacularily

Final Fantasy XIII and Metal Gear Solid 4! Hooray, after all that crap Sony finally redeem themselves with entries into two of the biggest franchises in gaming history, and the power of the PS3 will promise even better games! Oh my god I am so totally hyped these are gonna be the best entries in each series yet! Of course, at this stage, we have played both of those games. You'd be hard pressed to find someone who truly believed they were the best entries in their respective franchises in 2015.
Only on GAF is MGS4 mentioned in the same breath as FF13. What the hell is wrong with you people?

One of the best conferences ever to come out of E3. Shit was legendary.

You know, I have to say, for as much enjoyment as I got out of this, I'm actually kinda surprised that the negatives really overshadowed the positives. Yes, everyone agrees that the giant crab thing was hilarious, and FIVE HUNDRED NINETY NINE U.S. DOLLARS wasn't really something that your dedicated fans wanted to hear. But you know what, in terms of games, Sony actually had a pretty damn good showing. Stuff that people would be jizzing about under normal circumstances. Which shows how utterly devastating the conference as a whole was, seeing as how even something like MGS4 couldn't salvage it.

Microsoft's 2013 E3 press conference was decent outside of $499. All the PR after that was terrible. I would put Microsoft's 2010 press conference and the one they had Usher perform (may have also been 2010) on that list.

Crab boss was hilarious but the game being demoed was ok - just your general musou game, probably demoing to show lots of characters on screen at once. Funny moment.

The middle segment with games hat nobody bought seems unfair though. Everybody's golf is a proper classic, and Afrika shows Sony's willingness to invest in non-standard titles, and was actually pretty fun.

the price is why it sticks into memory really. And the price is weird because it was clearly $499/599 yet people only ever quote the more expensive one. Same orice as the xbox one for a machine with a bluray player back in 2006? Not stupidly expensive IMO

the year leading up to e3 06 was filled with shit like 'the retard pack' with regarding the 360's skus, and how dumb it was to have two at all. so it would follow that people would just look at it through the same lens. beyond that, i believe it was the first words spoken by hirai: 'the playstation 3 will retail for five-hundred and ninety-nine u.s. dollars' when the $400 360 was considered too expensive for what you were getting, the ps3 was absurdly expensive at even $100 more, let alone over half a grand.

and no one cared about the fact it could play blu ray movies. it never caught on the same way vhs or dvds did. the blu ray player in the ps3 was basically what the gamepad was to the wii u.

Still $200 more than the competition right out of the gate either way.

It was a great value if you cared about the blu-ray player as blu-ray players were still close to $1,000 back then if I remember correctly. If all you wanted to do was play games though then it was a very expensive price.

$499 in 2006 was worth more than $499 in 2013. There's about a 15% inflation rate to account for. Applying 2013's dollar to the PS3 launch price, you end up in $599/$699 territory. It was stupidly expensive, especially considering the unprecedented price disparity between Sony and the competition.

The worst conference of them all. My whole reaction to the conference is summed up in the Simpsons episode when Bart and homer are chasing the BBQ pig

"It's just a little unstable, it's still good. It's still good"

And then when the price was announced it was
"It's gone"
"I know"

The fallout was like a power vacuum of a fallen empire. The Wii360 campaign sprung up where buying the 2 consoles = price of the PS3, etc. and the quotes and bad PR didn't stop at the E3. Every week there'd be another dumb quote.

Very similar to MS with the Xbox one

Its interesting looking back just how much you can tell the future of a company based on the e3 presentations.

Sony, Microsoft, and Nintendo all had laughably bad presentations followed by major loss of sales and market share.

Sonys was this one, Microsoft had the kinect mess and tvtvtvtvtv, and Nintendo had "NEVER" and Ravi drums.

Konami ea and ubisoft had some terribad showings that preceded low points for the company as well.

People always say that what GAF and the hardcore fans think doesn't matter but I think its pretty clear that negative reaction to your e3 showings means you are in trouble.

Nah, E3 2008 had no direct influence on Wii sales, none. Despite the general narrative that it's a fad and it's going to stop selling any time now 2008 and 2009 sales were still insane. In 2007 it sold 17 mil consoles, while in 2008 and 2009 it was 24 and 26 mil respectively. It slowed down in 2010, but still sold 17 mil consoles.

Yep and MS' E3 conference was focused on games. Not Kinect and TV. Funny how people get the reveal event mixed with E3 2013 -- shows had bad the reveal was though.

Still can't believe they thought that showing footage of The Price Is Right during a video game console reveal event would be a good idea.

Im glad Krazy Ken is gone for good. That man is a genius but his old years got to him quick. He must have thought he was Jobs for a sec and realized he wasnt when it was too late.
In retrospect, I would say Ken's ideas for the PS3 were amazingly forward thinking and the PS4 is a step back in several aspects, but more importantly it allowed for Sony to have the runaway success that is the PS4 by forcing them to invest in many things that are huge today which if they had taken a more conventional approach they'd be twiddling their thumbs now.

On the plus side, this will be the worst conference ever. It will never be topped.

And it was hilarious.

That's about the only good thing you can say about this shit show.

i think people look at a market that's contracted, look at the launch of the ps3, and compare the ps4's relative success with 'well sony really turned that around!'

but the ps2 was the best-selling console of all-time. when the 360 underwhelmed people due to its graphics or its price, or whatever, the ps3 was supposed to show the world how things were really done. and instead it was like almost everything about what they were doing was not what they were supposed to be doing. it made the success of the ps2 look like the company had a really string of good luck (similar to nintendo in 2012 and to a lesser extent, 2011).

the show would probably have been a lot better if an hour of material was cut from its run time. sony, if your press event is eight minutes shorter than mad max: fury road, i'm expecting the presenters to have character arcs and develop as people.

To this day theres misinformed people who dont know sony released it for 500 because of the way misinformation spreads.

Yeah, I didn't know there was a 500 dollar one until I bought my used PS3 in 2012. I just heard the 600 price, exclaimed, "Is Sony on crack?!" and forgot about trying to go next gen at all (I was kinda poor but if it was cheaper it probably would have pulled at my mind more because I also love new gadgets and was and still am a big PS fan. Put it this way, I didn't think about buying any other new gen console, I just decided to be happy with my PS2). I think my BF even pointed out it was cheaper than most blu ray players and I was like, "I don't care, people aren't going to pay that much for a console!"

Wasn't until 2012 that I got a PS3 (some tip money from washing dogs and wanting a blu ray player got in my mind that maybe I could find a decent priced used PS3 and use the blu ray player as an excuse). And then learned that I was right about people not wanting to pay that much for a console (I actually felt kinda justified it backfired on Sony... once again, Playstation fan. But I think I was annoyed at Sony for pricing it way above I could even think to justify).

but the ps2 was the best-selling console of all-time. when the 360 underwhelmed people due to its graphics or its price, or whatever, the ps3 was supposed to show the world how things were really done. and instead it was like almost everything about what they were doing was not what they were supposed to be doing. it made the success of the ps2 look like the company had a really string of good luck (similar to nintendo in 2012 and to a lesser extent, 2011).

I don't think the PS2 looked like it was a string of good luck. I think honestly the PS2 always felt succesful cause it was riding on the success of the PS1. Sure, it surpassed it but the name was what got it really popular and PS1 is what built it. I think it does show how powerful the PS name was that despite Sony's messup with PS3 they were able to come back.

And I am absolutely sure that one of the reasons PS4 was successful wasn't just MS's messups (that sure helped though) but Sony had shown they paid attention and realized their mistakes when they launched the PS4. I noticed everything they focused on about the PS4 was something that addressed things that were criticized about the PS3. It was almost like them subtly saying, "we realize we f*cked, up, we listened, and we are showing it". I think people did get that message.

Sadly, I worry that Sony doesn't realize why they are doing well other than MS's f'up which means they could easily go arrogant all over again. But then again, I'm just basing this on the fact that they definitely are making PS+ a lot worse. I suppose I haven't seen anything else go downhill at least.

I gotta be honest, I never paid much attention to E3 until 2009 at the earliest. I mean I liked to play games but I had other interests until that point

Had no idea at all about this conference or even the PS3's reputation (though still managed to get a PS3 at launch, and at Australian price too). So it was a real eye opener finding out about 2006 era PS3

Genji plays nothing like a musou game at all.

Also it's actually fairly solid for a launch title. And in all honesty it still looks decent even in 2015. It's just the camera makes the game unplayable. Seriously a patch that only fixed that camera would improve the game heaps. It's insane they never ended up doing that

A company being excited for their new game is a huge slap in the face to all the fans that liked their old games.
Step one you make your console cost the most
you beat your chest and proudly boast
despite no good exclusive games
You make a bunch of ridiculous claims.

Then ignore I need to play online
don't make it fun like Xbox live
use bluray, which I don't need
now you're getting your ass kicked by the Wii

Sony you will burn with your PS3
I'll just keep playing my 360
Hope this song has helped you understand
Now you know how you killed your brand
