Halo splitscreen co-op RIP 2001-2015

:(

I had good times playing co-op with friends back in college. Thankfully, Halo 5 is looking pretty awesome regardless. I wasn't even excited for the game until the Game Informer info came out today. Plus it has Nathan Fillion! How could I not be excited?

I agree but, for me, specifically Halo was about gathering with friends. Nothing more and nothing less.

The term "Halo night" amongst friends didn't start because people played in their own houses via Xbox Live, I assure you.

If Halo 2 had launched without LAN support, I'd have had a pretty potent reaction too.

Played through all of the previous Halo games in local split screen with my son, if Halo 5 doesn't support it, there is zero reason for me to pick this up.

My memories and nostalgia with split-screen co op Halo make me bummed about this. But, realistically, it's not a huge feature like it used to be, most everyone is playing online, and no Gold require co-op is a good concession. They needed to hit 60 FPS and look next-gen, and the hardware just can't keep up with having split-screen Campaign too.

Sad to lose yet another staple feature of the Halo franchise, but it is already a different beast, good or bad (mostly bad), with 343 working on it.

If nobody plays like that, then why keep splitscreen multiplayer? by keeping that in they are recognising that people *do* play like that.

Graphics is bullshit. Nobody is going to judge them if the detail gets pared down for splitscreen.

This is not cool

When I had MCC I did all the campaigns with my brother. Was great fun

Did the same with Halo 3 and ODST on the 360 too

This is a dealbreaker for me as I have no interest in the multiplayer

I feel exactly the same. I've beaten every Halo with my little brother and this is just sad. When I told him he was even more dissapointed than me.

Does Call of Duty still have split screen co-op in campaign?

Well the past few games didn't (for the main campaign, maybe zombies had it) but Black Ops III is actually bringing it back.

2 player local splitscreen co-op for the campaign, 4 player online.

Not nobody, just less. Split screen has become harder and harder to manage for the HD generations and high resolutions, so I am not surprised they scrapped Campaign split screen. MP Split screen is probably much more manageable than all the shit going on in Campaign. I don't think they wanted to do a graphics downgrade, or hamper the framerate to include it, so they scrapped it instead. Understandable, but still disappointing.

Is graphical fidelity that important that you have to cut out the feature? There can't be any other real reason.

This is the core of the whole splitscreen debate. When you think about it it's basically a graphics vs gameplay debate, but not everybody is in a position where splitscreen is really useful.

Wait so it does have co-op, it's just online now instead of split-screen?

2 player online splitscreen for MP and probably whatever other coop modes besides campaign they will have.

The coop for campaign is 4 players online w/o gold required.

Like I said earlier, the title and OP is misleading but people want to continue to argue otherwise as more people roll in and are confused (including myself).

Game is going to release, some will be upset, majority will move on. Split screen co-op is dying in tons of games. You'll still have online coop available etc.

And then they wonder why sales for Halo games keep on decreasing with each new entry.

4 player online co op. No gold needed.

That topic title threw me for a loop then. As long as coop exists i'm gravy. Excitment back on!

lol on two things here:

you think this is going to decrease sales by a noticeable margin?

sales decreased with Halo 4?

I'm not saying it's the sole factor, but decreasing the multiplayer features has had an effect.

And yes, compared to Halo 3, sales definitely lower for halo 4. Possibly even compared to Reach, not sure about that one. May be close.

Only reason I could think this might have lower sales than its predecessor is because of the smaller userbase. Then again, Halo has a dedicated fanbase. If you have an Xbox One, chances are you're a Halo fan.

It would also have been fairly difficult to make the game look worse in co-op. The LoD was abysmal.
Should have been a piece of cake with a 60fps baseline this time round though. Cap splitscreen at 30 and you're golden. You have 2x as long to render two screens at half the resolution of single player.

does anybody remember multiplayer matches against xXJohnny420Xx, and his friends, xXJohnny420Xx(1), xXJohnny420Xx(2), and sometimes xXJohnny420Xx(3)? that's how every other bout was like for me during halo 3 and reach's heydays

Split screen multi-player is still in. It's the split screen coop campaign that is out. Something you're rarely going to see in games moving forward. Very hard to maintain any sort of decent frame rate.
