will we have sony's capsule toys in Shenmue 3?

Never played these games, but looked forward to getting this next one.

I started listening to the soundtrack for the first game and WOW. This is some incredible music.

IMO, the greatest game soundtrack of all time. I love it and am looking forward to the vinyl that is coming out in a few months.

Contribusted $1, want to add to the total number of supporters but not interested in financing/preordering for a series I'm not that crazy about. Hope they're able to find a good compromise between making a game that feels like Shenmue while still taking cues from modern game design to improve upon some of the more dated aspects.

The Kickstarter page does need to be managed better to keep people's interest in the game and create incentives to back it more.

they really need to be upfront with the stretch goals rather than the slow scroll.

i think funding would greatly increase if people saw "arcade room" listed.

i'm hyped as fuck tho guys.

Yeah, if you compare this KS with Mighty 9 or Bloodstain, the difference in communication, presentation, information and interaction with the fans is appalling.

It's still set in the '80s I imagine so it probably wouldn't make sense. I am kinda worried we could miss out on stuff like '80s Sega arcade games, I really hope it's all still in 3.

He said there would be a stretch goal for an arcade, but it's unclear whether it will be Sega-themed.

This.
The Kickstarter page needs a makeover, it's ugly as sin and reeks of amateurism.
The stretch goals are not explained. "Rapport system"? the fuck is this?
The new goals are a disappointment. 200.000$ for a batlle event? What?

the donations aren't very predictable any more.

we had a quick burst of about $20,000 in two hours that has all but slowed to a halt

I wouldn't say a halt. For the last 3 hours it's been increasing by about 6000-7000 an hour. The total for day 4 is currently $61,101 and it's only about half way through the day. For comparison Bloodstained's complete day 4 total was $104,471. It might drop off later on, but for now I think Shenmue 3's day 4 will edge out Bloodstained's.

Wouldn't it be better to normalize day 1 to 24 hours? (Which normalizes each game to its actual start time).

I think this is accurate for Shenmue III, although I don't know exactly what the total was after 48 hours (so day 2 might be higher and day 3 lower):

2,818,084 1st day
~250,000 2nd day
~100,000 3rd day (halfway through)

The Kickstarter has only been going 60 hours, that's 2 and a half days, not 4.

The total after 48 hours was about $3.08m
I'm guessing you are using Kicktraq? Bear in mind that these are Calendar days and the KS started late in the day during Sony's conference and they use US time as reference. That's why the funding curve is abnormal.
(Normally game KS follow bath curves with spikes with the exception of Bloodstained that still had similar drop-off and spikes but was able to move its average upwards during its campaign.)

Yeah I posted last night around half an hour before its 48 hours mark and it had raised just under $280,000 on Day 2.

Fair enough.

2,818,084 1st day
~280,000 2nd day
~70,000 3rd day (halfway through)

Your post was actually two hours before the 48 hour mark, but it's a closer estimate than mine was.

Maybe one of SEGA's stipulations was that the game has to still feature capsule toys of their characters for advertising...?
I'd be okay with that!

In terms of the VA, getting Corey Marshall back would be awesome for most but I have the EU DC version of Shenmue 2 which is in Japanese.
This was great as in Shenmue 1 they spoke English but now in 2 we're in a new country and everybody speaks a different language. It added to the immersion.
So as we'll still in China I'll continue to play 3 in Japanese with English subtitles.

I guess now 3 is on the way the Shenmue documentary can now have a happy ending!

Some may consider this sacrilege, but I've always considered Yu Suzuki the 'Akira Kurosawa' of the game industry. Their respective abilities to craft experiences that redefined their industries, combined with their abilities to push the boundaries of their art forms to levels never seen before always seemed unique to me. Plus, the parallels between the later part of Kurosawa's life and his inability to secure funding (until George Lucas and Francis Ford Coppola stepped in) always seemed to parallel Yu Suzuki's struggles with Shenmue III to me.

I always was afraid that like Kurosawa, he would not be truly appreciated in his lifetime, and that it wouldn't be until his passing that people began to realize the profound effect he had on the industry. Thankfully, the day has come where Shenmue III can be completed. Hopefully, this will begin a career revival that will allow fans to continue to enjoy Yu's work for years to come.

Great post!
I'd never put the two together before but you're absolutely right, their careers do have a lot of similar parallels. I truly hope Yu receives the respect and praise he deserves whilst he's still around to appreciate it.

Yeah, I'm going by kicktraq's division of days, but they cut the first day off real early, since they go by calender days. I'll refrain from posting overall totals from them since that messes it up too much.

However the main point I was making was that the funding hasn't halted and looking at the last few hours it's been increasing steadily at around 6-7k.

Kicktraq pulls the latest number once an hour at roughly 1 minute past the hour. Their last update was at 14:01 my time in the UK so BST with a total of $3,165,501. With around 10 minutes to go before the full hour, the current total as of 14:52 (BST) is £3,171,671. So it's heading for another hour with a total between 6-7k, which is the fourth hour that I've checked it.

So yeah, I guess what I'm saying is people need to stop being paranoid.

Edit: Full hour total was $3,172,746, so an hourly increase of $7245

sony's john drake confirms again that sony are not the only ones providing additional funding

15:48 here

This needs to be stressed, the narrative on the Internet has become that this Kickstarter is just to gauge interest and after its finished Sony will step in and fund the project to its fullest.

But the Kickstarter is essential in getting the best Shenmue 3 possible and Sony is only providing "some" funding and marketing.

Call me crazy but what do you think would happen if one of the stretch goals was for a beyond arcade perfect version of Virtua Fighter 1? I would go insane and it is indeed possible!

This is why you cannot be too secretive. Let people know to generate hype and funding. That is the way of kickstarter.

I don't think that'd be harder than any other arcade game. These days they could just implement MAME and run it off that. Assuming they have the license for the game of course.

It wouldn't really be appropriate for the era though.

Now this is what interests me, as I'm curious what other companies could be investing in the project, is SEGA involved? Maybe Microsoft will want to kick in some cash for an Xbox version? Could that even happen? Where two platform holders could both sponsor the same game so that it can appear on both systems?

Is such a thing even possible?

The arcade games they chose were always period-appropriate. Hang On, Outrun, and Space Harrier were all in arcades in 1986-7.

Indeed, but I do not have the data for it and now I'm in a different country (since I did that spreadsheet). I can probably not add it until saturday. Good that people are supplying data, however I'm still not sure it is a much better comparison with e.g. BS/Ouya since I have no idea if those numbers are accumulated over 24h-intervals. If you PM or leave data here I will take it into account. Was asleep when KS went up and when Kicktraq change days so it is hard for me to collect (seem to happen around 3am my time, cet).

Not sure. If the Game Center is indeed a stretchgoal they need games to fill it, and things like this were part of the Shenmue experience.

Suggestions, my friend? Im collating as much infoas possible so i can draft something together.
i'd rather it go into crafting the world, expanding upon quests, refining systems, etc

don't get me wrong, i'd love vf in shenmue 3 though. it'll be interesting to see what makes it into the game center stretch goal though.

That is a better argument yes. so they would probably use the same games in Shenmue III though it should be noted that Ryo's saturn definitely didn't exist in the 80s.

Is the arcade stretch goal separate or is it part of the mini games x5 goal?
Who knows. They've been terrible at explaining stuff. Maybe when we hit the goal.
Pretty counter-intuitive since they should be telling people why they should be excited in order to hit the goals not the other way around.

i kind of knew this would happen, but i didnt expect it to be this quickly
shenmue 3 was announced. everyone should be bouncing off the walls excited (and i think most shenmue fans are)

god dammit. stop trying to take me down from my high, internet (i know most of us in this thread are not the problem)
