Did I miss anything good or any new information on the SFV stream thus far today?

Nope, I don't think there was anything new. But gootecks is playing and supposedly LI Joe showed some Nash play.

EDIT: Also Editors tournament was interesting Spanish player Nacho showed some solid play.

Should street fighter 5 make it so that counter hits work when the move is recovering or would that be a lot?

That's a lot, especially considering they added crush counter to the game. I imagine the damage on punishes is already high enough as is.

I'm still sitting here daydreaming of ways to limit throw OS in the game that aren't flat out TRM. I still like Yata's way a lot, and the way DFC and Skullgirls require you to be standing to tech is cool.

I think these are serious competitors this week.

Random Fighting Game Question:

Why do you guys think 3d fighters didn't take over the genre as much as other 3d game did other genres?

I think it comes down to hit detection and footsies. It's just easier to read and translate in a 2D game when hits connect when there is only one plane of view.

3D fighters did take over the genre during the late 90's all the way up to the release of SF4.

I think the biggest reason why 2D fighters regained the crown from 3D fighters is that 3D fighters are more complex by default. That and the draw of a fighting game being in 3D lost its appeal because everyone was already so used to it. It wasnt the new kid on the block like how it was when Tekken 3 was selling like hotcakes.

Different question. What game should we all be playing in order to get ready for streetfighter five? Streetfighter Alpha 3, streetfighter three, or stay on streetfighter four?

So sfv beta is only for NA pre-orders. Outside for NA you have to submit an application for the chance for getting in...

Any Street Fighter game really. Any fighting game focused on grounded footsies really.

2D only fell off because the arcade tech outpaced consoles, leaving home players behind. 3D games are almost all 2D games with additional movement options anyway.

Throw range in 5 seems really short, and tick throw setup seems worse than 4. I like this. In the ground game it seems like you have to walk up point blank range and make a hard read and go for the grab. After a jump-in you it looks like most jabs push out of grab range. I saw many people whiffing grabs in situations where tick throw setup would have worked in SF4, and in SF5 it looks like jump-in followed by throw is the better option.

If any future characters have a kara throw, that will be huge and make their pressure insane.

I agree. It's much cooler to do a "hard read" close range throw than a throw where I'm about two arm lengths from the opponent anyway.

I'd say the Ultimax throw range is about perfect for an anime fighter, but I don't think SF has ever had a throw system I've liked. ST throws are incredibly ridiculous, 3S kara throws are unbelievable, SF4 throws look visually deceptive and lead to oki bullshit. I guess Alpha series throws were cool?

Many people I've talked to that picked up fighters and asked why don't you play Tekken or VF they always tell me looks boring.

Looking at Tekken 7 the animations and style of game I don't appeals to new comers the game does not excite them. Last time I seen the casual gaming public mad mad hype over Tekken was Tekken 3.

Also, Namco has hard on to always put Tekken out on Arcades months, months, AND MONTHS before console that by the time it does come to console casual people don't give a fuck.

I'm calling it right now Tekken 7 is gonna sell like trash on next gen consoles it won't grow it's numbers by much you'll have the same old Tekken players buying the game and a few casual gamers but they are doing jack fucking shit to excite people that don't even play fighters to pick the game up.

Like I really enjoyed the 3 day event @E3 Namco held for Tekken 7 promoting it on twitch tv...oh wait they did not do jack shit.

Namco: How come these Capcom guys get so many casual players to get excited for this SFV?

Sega: Because their game is stupid easy and not super complex and arcade first like us HAHAHAHAHAHA. WE HAVE RESPECT AND HONOUR

Capcom & SONY: PRE-Orders are off the charts. :)

Do you ever get tired of being wrong?

As guy who has loved 3d fighters in the past...2D games are better. Not inherently so, just as they are are currently constructed.

Advantages of 2D games:
  • Classes of moves are easier to understand
  • Use of vertical space
  • Long range gameplay
  • Faster
  • Meter and various subsystems
  • Stylized art
Advantages of 3D games:
  • Close range mix ups
  • Sidestep
  • Background interaction
  • Camera shenanigans
Several 2D games have adopted 3D strengths but outside of Soulcalibur V you don't see 3D games using 2D strengths. There are ways to make a 3D game that combines the best of both types of fighters but I don't think we'll see it at this point. Unless someone out there Kickstarts it or something.

Don't worry about him, he likes to say dumb things like "this guy who was a tester until February for a game that came out in April had an unfair advantage at a tournament in late May because he used secret techniques also used by a different player at a tournament in early May."

You're being a presumptuous jackass posting like you actually know my stance on the character being in the game.

You're personal opinion on the matter wasn't really what was important to me.

I used your post as an opportunity to make a point to others, regardless of what you said or feel:

Just because Chun wasn't used a lot doesn't mean A) she wont be used in the future when people actually learn to play SF5, or B) that she's not popular.

We have lots of concrete proof of Chun's popularity in the fanbase. It's not really debatable at this point.
