Slow last month! Let's see if we can be a bit more active this time!

Remember:

DO NOT just post the title of the movie you watched. It isn't conducive at all to the kind of discussion & communication we want to engender here, because it tells us nothing of you, the movie, the impact of the latter on the former. Post scores, descriptions, essays, poems, gifs, hashtags, whatever provides you the best outlet for personal expression, you unique little digital snowflake. Also, Marvel movies are mostly shit. - icarus-daedelus

July already!

I saw a whopping 9 movies in June, which is unreasonably low seeing as how it was 33 June last year. I suck.

Top 5 first time watches of June:

1. My Neighbor Totoro
2. Fast Times at Ridgemont High

And that's it, the rest kinda sucked.

Currygan

new movies watched in June:

Whiplash
Dom Hemingway
The Embalmer
Jurassic World
Ghost Rider
Transformers 4
Spooks Greater Good

The Embalmer and Whiplash have been the best ones. The rest is just a muddled mess of various degrees of arse

best rewatches:

The Long Goodbye
Blues Brothers
Little Big Man

worst rewatch: Ocean's 12. Yech

22 movies in June, I'm up to 104 for the year.
Top 5 first viewings:

1. Inside Out
2. Jurassic Park
3. Galaxy Quest
4. Terminator 2: Judgment Day
5. The Secret of Kells

Best rewatch: Toy Story 3
Worst rewatch: Monsters University

Upcoming, I'm mildly interested in Terminator: Genisys but the tepid critical response is concerning. Ant-Man looks interesting, as does Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation. The latter gives me an excuse to go and watch the previous movies.

only two new watches in June that I'd consider great, followed by a handful that were pretty good or B/B- tier. notable:
1) Billy Budd
2) Moonstruck
3) Heavenly Creatures
4) Attenberg
5) Viola
6) Night Train to Munich

only rewatches were Gone Girl (still hilarious and sinister) and A Woman is a Woman, which is astounding

the shit:
bad) Entourage
badder) Jurassic World
baddest) The Tribe

don't know if/where this is available outside of Germany but you should probably check out Schipper's Victoria if you get the chance, if only for the astonishing camera work by Grøvlen

Top Zatoichi for Zatoichi (in no particular Zatoichi)
-New Tale of Zatoichi
-Fight, Zatoichi, Fight
-Zatoichi's Pilgrimage
-Zatoichi in Desperation
-Yojimbo

Most Valuable Rewatch: Zatoichi (2003); also the only rewatch this month

The Instantly Forgettable Award: tie, Adventures of Zatoichi and Hanzo the Razor: Who's Got the Gold?

I don't have any strict themes I'm following this month, although it seems sensible to continue on with Japanese cinema, as it represents my biggest chunk of the backlog and I've been having a lot of fun getting re-versed in them. I do have some business to tend to by the end of the month, as a schedule for a certain October marathon should be finalized so I can start planning purchases.

I remember reading about that one, looks like it was picked up for US distribution after Berlin and will release here sometime this year. It at least sounds interesting as a single-take movie, though I'm not sure continuous take hooks are ultimately substantial in any way

Watched a lot of stuff last month, and most of it was actually pretty good! Also introduced myself to Roger Corman's work and damned if he didn't make a handful of legit good films.

2. Sorcerer
3. Assault on Precinct 13
4. The Friends of Eddie Coyle
5. Lenny
6. Pit and the Pendulum
7. The Fall of the House of Usher

I actually sorta liked MU. Sure it ain't a masterpiece, it's just a trite cash grab, but the sheer amount of vitriol it got always baffled me

lol. heard so much positive buzz about the tribe tho. was it really that crap?

The thing is, I would absolutely recommend seeing The Tribe over many other releases this year. It is a wholly unique experience-- just an inexorably terrible one. It's bullshit schlocky sadistic exploitation (inevitably aimed at women) over a stock small-time gang story. The subtitleless sign language conceit actively snuffs out any possible insight or entry into this unexamined subculture and completely fails to move the focus onto the language or movement of bodies or the camera. Boring as shit single takes with thoughtless framing of generically pretty (frequently naked, because artsy) actors acting badly. Pretentious and hollow piece of garbage that had me holding back mocking laughter at its attempts to be extreme and piercing. but, uh, maybe it's just me. Every other review I see is enormously positive, and even swoon liked it.

Top Five for June:

Fucking fantastic:
1. Like Father, Like Son (2013)

Good:
2. The One I Love (2014)

Great performances (Keaton and Stone were the highlights) and cinematography but just an alright movie overall:
3. Birdman: Or (The Unexpected Virtue of Ignorance) (2014)

Running out of good movies that I watched but these were entertaining:
4. Jurassic World (2015)
5. Tucker and Dale vs. Evil (2010)

I watched Blue Velvet (1986) the other night, I've been watching Twin Peaks recently so I decide to start watching some of Lynch's other work. I was not a fan of this one at all, Hopper was interesting and the only non shit performer in this thing, Isabella Rossellini in particular was atrocious. So does bad shit happen to women in every Lynch work?

I cannot, for the life of me, fathom how people consider Gone Girl a funny movie. It was intense from start to finish with solid, serious acting and I have watched it twice.

I suppose there is a funny in everything if you tried hard.

Sanjuro hits the ground running, and rarely lets up from there. With its more twisty narrative, it sustains itself during its 96-minute runtime with humorous oversights on the part of our villains that still wind up backfiring for our group of well-intended but severely inexperienced heroes at nearly every opportunity, making them feel real underdogs. It's a more humorous film than Yojimbo, with little in the way of bloodshed until the very, very end, but I feel like it's a stronger one just because it finds a way of generating a solid amount of tension as the situation gets worse and worse for the noble clan, and even Sanjuro himself gets put in a pretty precarious position by the end of it. As always, Kurosawa's filmmaking is exemplary, and I especially liked the recurring image of fitting all nine of the noble clan members in the frame with Sanjuro, who happens to always be positioned in such a way to signify his outsider status despite being amongst them and willing to help out where he can. Rather nice stuff all around.

lol what? You, uh, don't have to "try hard" for Gone Girl to be funny. There are straight-up jokes in Gone Girl. every interaction between Nick and Go has like five punchlines.
Amy's manipulation and insane plan goes so far it becomes hilarious, and her scenes at the campground have a bunch of jokes.
Desi does a ton of funny stuff. Tyler Perry's character and the detectives ham it up. (This is not a film of "serious" acting.) On a surface level the film is funny. intentionally so. It's also knowingly funny in other ways, playing up its sourness and luridness to towering heights, but those aspects are also thrilling and twisted so it's easily conflated I guess

I actually sorta liked MU. Sure it ain't a masterpiece, it's just a trite cash grab, but the sheer amount of vitriol it got always baffled me

I wouldn't say it's a bad movie, just a rather mediocre one. Didn't really try anything new with the college movie tropes and thus it wasn't very interesting.

Ender's Game

I was bored. I thought I might as well give it a shot since I saw a few interesting gifs and Asa Butterfield was still in the running for Spiderman at the time, as far as I knew anyway. It was okay. I wasn't particularly impressed but it passed the time well enough.

The Impossible

I decided to give this a watch after Thomas Holland was announced as the new Spiderman. Of course I was confident this would be a good movie due to Ewan McGregor and Naomi Watts, but that wasn't enough to prepare me for the amazing experience the film turned out to be. I was totally engrossed in the compelling on screen drama and the acting was phenomenal. I was especially impressed with all three leads, the cinematography, and the scale of the catastrophe. Overall a fantastic film, one I would very much recommend to anyone who'll listen.

Inglorious Basterds

I don't know why it took me so long to sit down and watch this film, but I'm glad I did. Wonderful cast with so many great performances, hilarious writing and just a fun experience overall. It ran a little long, and Brad Pitt's accent was a bit much, but I loved it all the same.

there is a line about smacking a person in the face with an erection in the movie you are talking about.

good lord, as if correctly identifying a movie that is trying to be funny as funny is discrediting the high high artistry of a pulp thriller. because hitchcock and reed and preminger were just dour, serious guys with no humor

but see, GG leaves me a bit perplexed, I can't place it into a definite genre, to a point I don't know if Fincher wants to be intentionally funny or if these scenes are supposed to be serious but end up being wacky instead. Of course tonally shifting movies exist since forever, but GG has microshifts that make it hard. definitely in need of a rewatch

Top 4 for June 2015:

1. Veronika Voss
2. Citizen X
.
.
.
.
.
3. Jurassic World
4. The Hangover

Only managed 4 films in June. One great, one good, two bad.

Odd Man Out - 5/5 - Carol Reed noir about a robbery in Belfast that goes bad and leaves an innocent clerk murdered and the local IRA chief behind it mortally wounded and on the lam. I say it's about the robbery, but really it's about the aftermath and many of the people living in the city and their various motivations, problems, and how the issues with the IRA affects them. The black and white photography is top notch stuff, prototypical noir in the best way. James Mason's performance is damn good, though I also really enjoyed Denis O'Dea as the police inspector hunting him down. He's pretty sinister when he first appears in a spurt of violence, but as one character puts it, he's not so bad as their sort goes. The ending is unflinchingly heart-rending.

Interesting. I loved it, but can understand those criticisms. Although I didn't need any more insight, I expected that even in a deaf framework, crime/violence/prostitution especially in a not particularly affluent area of that country would all be evident in a sheltered but not closely monitored boarding school where the adults have no idea what's going on. I found it more tragic but believable that this would happen and not as much sadistic exploitation. That scene made me wince because it's rarely shown in cinema in such detail and then the brutal ending solidified that this was a world of violence among kids who know no other way (protagonist gets bullied and then can't take it anymore). I didn't find a problem with the acting, it was convincing to me with these kids in that naturalistic way. Cool to see a negative take on the film.

Nah there's plenty of intentional jokes in the movie. Plus you could potentially see some of the media scenes as humorous satire

It's like a hybrid dark comedy/thriller

DeathoftheEndless

Crashing this plane... with no survivors!
1. Blood and Black Lace
2. Fist of Legend
3. Manhunter
4. The Bird with the Crystal Plumage
5. Fist of Fury

Aerobicide, True Lies, and Legend of the Fist are awesome in their own ways. Predestination, Solaris (2002), Mars Attacks!, The Girl Who Knew Too Much, The Rocketeer, and possibly others I've forgotten were also viewed.

Have barely made a dent in my watchlist/backlog the last few months.

Top first watches of June

1. Babe: Pig In The City (1998) (George Miller) - George MIller is a madman and this movie is amazing.
2. Inside Out (2015) (Pete Docter, Ronnie del Carmen) - Pixar back
3. Once (2006) (John Carney) - Great music
4. Begin Again (2013) (John Carney) - Not as great as Once, but good music.
5. Spy (2015) (Paul Feig) - Not as tight as I wish it was, but fun. Statham is amazing.

It is isn't it?

I liked it the first time, but my second watch showed its potential longevity. It holds up to rewatches quite nicely. The world is very distinctive too.

Have barely made a dent in my watchlist/backlog the last few months.

I'm way too far behind on my movie watching. I'm trying to lose weight and I'm busy, so I barely watch anything :(

Sweet, first time on the Wall of Shame!

Top 5 of June:

1. Inside Out
2. Scream
3. Jurassic World
4. San Andreas
5. Spy

Worst was Jurassic Park III. Coincidentally, this post includes all six first watches of June haha.

Inside Out - Oh look. Another Pixar movie with a character suffering issues of abandonment by it's child. There are like two characters I remotely liked in this movie (Sadness and Bing Bong), although I did like that there was
no real villain. Kinda expected Bing Bong to turn evil but then there still would have been no real villain
. I kinda consider Joy a villain, but the movie doesn't. Fear, Anger, and Disgust had almost nothing to do all in all. The concept of multiple minds was much more interesting than the actual plot and amounted to 1% of the movie. The abstract segment was really neat, but I wish the subconscious/dreams was scarier. I greatly appreciated that the whole characters controlled by their emotions thing wasn't exclusive to just female characters, because I really wouldn't put it past Pixar.

Spy - Surprisingly way funnier than I expected, but it was basically like watching a Kingsman 2. Statham was fucking hilarious, as were Jude Law and
50 Cent with the Kanye jabs
.

The Purple Rose of Cairo

First time watch. Found it to be both charming and funny. The ending was as realistic as it could get

Get Shorty

Another first time. Also found this to be funny. Really did like all of the characters too

Magic Mike XXL

First movie was better, no question. But I still did have a great time watching it. The audience I was with at the showing though....they definitely wanted less talking and more stripping

Terminator: Genisys

Yeah, as I expected, it was shit

Top 10 first time watches in June:

1. Harakiri (1962)
2. Late Spring (1949)
3. Zodiac (2007)
4. 12 Angry Men (1957)
5. Stalker (1979)
6. The General (1926)
7. The Magician (1958)
8. M (1931)
9. Sword of the Beast (1965)
10. The Artist (2011)

New to the thread so:

1. What's your favorite Movie?
Casino

2. Who's your favorite director?
Quentin Tarantino

3. Who are your favorite actors/actresses?
Robert de Niro, Al Pacino, Mel Gibson, Brad Pitt, Christian Bale, Joe Pesci, Tom Cruise, Cristoph Waltz, Cameron Diaz, Cate Blanchett, Marisa Tomei, Nicole Kidman and I could go and on. These are some of my favorites, but there are a lot more also.

4. Favorite Genre(s)?
history, drama, war, comedy, horror

5. What's your favorite performance in film?
Joe Pesci as Nicky Santoro in Casino. Here's 2 small clips:

As for the movies I've seen recently, it's

Terminator Genisys - it was just a clusterfuck of mumblings, different "revolutionary" ideas about the script, one of the worst couple in recent cinema history - Jai Courtney and Emilia Clarke with no chemistry whatsoever and I could go on about how bad it is.
I mean I love Arnie a lot and I really liked seeing him again as the mighty Terminator, but that was it. Everything else just reeks of mediocrity and bad ideas put together. I would not recommend wasting your money to go to the cinema for it.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 - Boring, plodding and mostly uninteresting. The only good Hunger Games movie is the first, but the second is okay. The only really good parts are the Games themselves.

Jessabelle: I got what I expected, but it wasn't half-bad. They should've ended it differently, though.

DeathoftheEndless

btw we are halfway into the year! Anyone want to post a best-of-2015-so-far list?

1. Mad Max: Fury Road - Very basic story and characters, but the action is creative and cool, which is all that matters.

2. Avengers: Age of Ultron - Most of the characters are given the chance to shine and grow. There are some really funny moments and the fights are good, but can be too much at times. Ultron is an interesting villain and deserved more attention.

3. Jurassic World - It felt like a rehash of the original, but the setpieces don't flow as well and there are some cheesy moments.

I typically don't see movies when they come out.

Well I only got the wide releases and things they hit Blu-Ray/VOD to go off of, but a top 5 for me so far:

2. World of Tomorrow
3. Inside Out

1 - Foxcatcher and it's not even close

2 - Kingsman

3 - A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence

4 - Shaun the Sheep the Movie

5 - Mad Max

6 - Whiplash
