Nintendo PlayStation...so, apparently someone has one.

"So my dad finally let me take a photo of this top secret Sony and Nintendo super system that uses a CD to play games and he has a demo game with it that noones ever played this is all so rare that nobody's ever confirmed its existence but I'm not allowed to talk about it really so yeah bye"

This story reads like schoolyard braggart circa 1993.

If this is real this is awesome. Seriously, what is on the cartridge? Inquiring minds want to know. Someone get this person to boot it up!

Nintendo stuff are on the back and out of sight. Sony wanted full branding rights and why Nintendo backed out of the deal.

The book Game Over cites the reason why Nintendo used the loose structure of a Japanese contract to get out of the agreement was that it granted Sony full control of the CD software and while the contract had been signed in 1988 by 1991 Yamauchi no longer viewed it as favorable. He had Nintendo announce it's deal with Phillips at CES 91 after Sony had announced their hardware to pubically embarrass them.

Man, that is such a dick move! Makes me happy the PS1 went on the demolish the 64.

edit: an s-video port on a console from 1995? something doesn't compute here.

I just got a monitor made in the 80s which has s-video.....

Not to mention the original release of the PS1 in Japan had s-video in 1994.

The owner of the system is talking about it here.

It came from a man named Olaf that used to work for Nintendo. The owner is currently seeking a power supply to boot it up.

Exactly.

Since this device was the precursor to the PS1, it makes sense that this would HEAVILY HEAVILY resemble the first PS1, which had all this.

I like how the guy is trying to solve the mystery of this out-of-fuckin-nowhere Olaf's prototype that most didn't think even existed until now, and multiple people are all like "Look, hey, could you not double-post? Please? I mean, thanks for answering our questions and all, but... Ugh. Double-posting."

Edit: I actually think it is still a prototype but it does appear to be the Sony made SNES prototype that has a CD drive

From 2012

Image is from Edge Magazine's 200th issues which has a making of Playstation. Someone let me know if that's not okay to post

So legitimate prototype maybe?

If I remember correctly, the Super Nintendo was intended to have a disc drive add-on, much like the N64DD, that was developed by Sony. That's why these images have a cartridge and utilize the Super Famicom controller.

It wasn't intended to be the successor.

Really aggravating to read the heavy handed moderating there.
This is like a modern Indiana Jones discovery and these guys are worried about proper forum etiquette.

Reminds me of trying to be a part of Wipeoutzone long ago.

Edit: IS supersega really going to try soldering this thing? Someone stop him

He's going to try to solder together a power supply with the correct plug, not the console itself.

I wish this happened. I remember clamouring for the SNES CD as a child, and even more after 21 years of Playstation history, I want it bad.

I'm inclined to think this prototype is legit. Everything looks right.

It would have been hilarious if he just said "you know what, nevermind. bye." in response to that.

I thought he asked the owner to mail him the console earlier in the thread. I see now.

I'd quadruple post and even fuck the admin (sorry evilore) if I owned this console, and you'd all let me.

That thing is beautiful!

I never thought I'd live to see the day that a Nintendo PlayStation was found in the wild.

I seriously thought they were all destroyed and none exist.

when my dads company went bankrupt, my dad found it in a box of "junk" he was supposed to throw out.

Wow...

That's an amazing find! You could say that thing is like the archaeopteryx of video game consoles.

That thing could help us to know how advanced the project was before the collaboration fell apart. That look almost production ready.

That kid who said his dad worked for Nintendo and had a Nintendo PlayStation... was telling the truth all along. My childhood was a lie.

If this is real, it is the world's most valuable gaming item. It should be in a museum, or at least Ripley's Believe it or Not.

Man, that is such a dick move! Makes me happy the PS1 went on the demolish the 64.

The way the book describes the agreement it was pretty far in Sony's favor, if I remember correctly it described the contact as being one that had a loosely binding structure so details could be changed later.

Realistically Nintendo probably should have met with Sony to renegotiate the contract. What they ended up doing IMO was reprehensible though.

As you said it cost them the next generation, probably the one after it and it additionally has repercussions which they continue to feel to this day. They literally took an ally and made them into thier own worst enemy and indirectly got Microsoft involved as well (They entered the market to oppose Sony).

It also resulted in the ridiculous Zelda games and the Mario one people love mocking.

Arguably it's the worst decision the company ever made, and it's hard to feel bad for them considering it's the result of a malicious act toward a business partner.

Thanks for the link, i still dont know if thats an pretty good fake or is this thing is real...

What if it runs both Snes cartridges and PS1 games for real?
Snes carts, good chance. Doubt it runs legit ps1 production cd's. My reading of the history is that the actual Playstation became super powered... Something else entirely after it was ripped from Nintendo.

That demo disc he claims he has that came with it though, that fascinates me because it implies that it's code written specifically for this device.

So many possibilities!

If this is fake I would be upset

Seeing a snes controller with playstation branding is doing two things to me, tripping me out and reminding me of a 3rd party ps1 controller which was the same shape.

More than anything, he should try to upload whatever's on the disc and cartridge. Hopefully it'll still work when he gets the proper equipment.

I love this sort of stuff, elaborate fake or not.

Imagine if NX is a Sony Nintendo collaboration. The guts of a PS4 with a Nintendo made DS sequel as its controller which natively plays PS4 games + NX games.

Sony sell more software. Nintendo have a strong platform for their own games. Royalty splits could be tricky though which I'm sure killed the original Nintendo PlayStation.

At least that video can give us some assurance he isn't just an idiot who will end up breaking it. He seemed to realize that testing random chords is not the smart decision. Hopefully he gets a power cord and can get the thing to even power on.
