Nintendo PlayStation...so, apparently someone has one.

Loving all the moronic posts on other forums from people who apparently have no experience with retro game collecting.

"Just order a stock AC adapter and shove it in", nevermind that you might fry the thing to a crisp if it's not the right voltage/polarity.

Pretty neat if real, but the different lettering of PlayStation/PLAY STATION on the controller annoys my OCD too much.

Load times + copy protection, and, in retrospect, Nintendo made the right call.

Advantages to CD format too ya know. I don't see how Nintendo made the right call here at all. I say that as a hardcore Nintendo fan. Just because they made great games on it doesn't mean it was a good call by any means.

Almost as irritating as everybody else telling him what to do. If I were the owner I'd be sick of it all already.

Please be real, And someone send this guy to someone that has the right people in his area. This stuff shouldn't just be turned on for the sake of seeing if it works. Open it up see if everything is in working order, then fire it up.

If it's real (At this point I'm inclined to think it is) it needs to be presevered.

This is the most amazing prototype find of all time assuming it's real. Hopefully they can find a safe way to power it on. Why did Nintendo have to stab Sony in the back and publically humiliate them at CES? Ugh. One of the most brazen betrayals and trolls of all time, still blows my mind they would do that, brutal.

Man, just looking at that thing and the missed possibilities for the industry. Sega would quite likely still be making consoles and we'd probably have gotten amazing content like sequels or expansion packs for games such as SMW, Zelda and Super Metroid not to mention all the amazing Square RPGs. On the other hand, Nintendo would still be arrogant and ruling with an iron fist and games like FF VII and MGS would likely have compromised stories and themes.

But wow, seriously....if Yoshida keeps his friendly stance and all the pieces fall into place serendipitously...maybe a Nintendo-Sony alliance for modern times will happen someday. Nintendo Playstation 2023, I can dream. :p

How much it ends up going for really depends on how much media interest that this device can generate at this point in time.

But if any bit of gaming history can go for ludicrous sums, this certainly ranks highly up there - it has the pedigree and history to it.

Of course the first one that goes might go for a bit... but then more (if they still exist) will start turning up because of the high value.

I cringe at the fact that it's yellowed... Too bad. Many SNES and SFC didn't yellow so it's unfortunate this one did.

Abandoning it created their biggest rival who then crushed them, it was a bad call.
I guess.

The PlayStation initiative already existed within Sony before they ever talked to Nintendo. It's not like Nintendo and Sony's collaboration birthed a giant. The giant already existed and were going to use Nintendo to get their foot in the door.

For all we know Sony would have dropped Nintendo once they were established (maybe think of how Beats used Monster to get into the high end audio game, and then ditched Monster who ended up as a big loser).

I also believe Sony would have walked away with a huge cut of every Nintendo CD ever sold. It wasn't a good deal for Nintendo. For all we know, going through with the deal might have just helped Sony up on Nintendo's back and they'd be a huge competitor anyway.

I think a lot of people are confusing the mythic status of the Sony/Nintendo collaboration as evidence that it should never have been canned. It could have been Nintendo's 32X. It could have been a Trojan horse for Sony to take over even more of Nintendo's customer base than they did ... We just can't know.

I would say the deal did already everything Sony needed although the console was never released. Many big software companies were already working on Nintendo Playstation games which means that Sony had etablished communication lines to advertise it's third party friendly Playstation to all important developers.

I never thought I'd see the day I see this.

What a time to be alive.

It's stuff like this and reading back into the history of Playstation that really fills me with nostalgia and awe at what PS is now.

Makes you realise how much history they have in this industry.

yeah, in my mind the alternate history in which this thing was released impacts Nintendo's future far more than Sony's.

Oh, my God. Get Indiana Jones in here, or Nathan Drake, or someone.

We need to get it before Hitler does.

Doing a little Googling it looks like the yellowing could be reversed. Of course that would be the last thing to worry about right now, but it would be great to see it fully restored at some point.

Just saw that Borman comment string. It's hilarious that people think they know more than him when it comes to this shit.
Why is only the controller port panel yellowed (and what looks like the power button)?
It's probably got to do with how it was packaged, or where it was stored.

He does cme across as pretty blunt though, so that might encourage people to argue back.

Also, aren't examples of previous prototypes for machines that eventually released? They're nice, but this would be a prototype of a machine that never came out, based on a relationship between two well known gaming brands, that went sour. A pivotal moment in gaming history. I think that makes any comparison with other 'normal' prototypes unsafe.

The thing was left in an attic all these years, with who-knows-what pressed against it in the box at odd angles. It's very likely that it could be unevenly aged on the exterior, and even more likely that the internals are corroded as fuck, meaning that he should NOT under ANY circumstances try to power it up until an expert opens the hood.

Auction it to a museum or uber-wealthy collector so that it can be properly preserved (what's left of it) and for god's sake stop casually tossing it around like a random hunk of plastic that isn't potentially worth millions.

Seeing this documentation makes me end up confused as fuck as to how Nintendo went from planning to use 540 MB CDs (in 1993) to fucking 32 MB cartridges (~1995).

SNES era was the last time they designed hardware with common sense.

Did you know they designed Satellaview for SNES? Imagine if the Nintendo/Sony partnership stuck around, the Playstation could have been the first to internet gaming before the Dreamcast.

Sun exposure. The yellowing is a problem with the flame retardant additives that are added to ABS plastic in many cases. The process is accelerated by exposure to UV light and/or heat. There have been some efforts to develop chemicals that can reverse the process and restore the original colour of ABS plastic without damaging the material. Retrobrite is such a chemical but I haven't seen long-term effect reports (or much after the initial hype of it being the second coming of Jesus) I wouldn't risk it on such a historically valuable artefact unless there is evidence.

i get that (my super famicom is the same) but why is the white plastic above the controller panel just fine. I suppose it looks like it could be a different material but wouldn't it still yellow?

The controller panel looks like a direct copy of a super famicom one. If this was an early proto then maybe Nintendo would be providing those parts?

I would buy a reproduction of this :) it's beautiful

Love to know what's the the tech demo cart, maybe the cart can access the CD player or something crazy?

The product itself just simply doesn't matter that much. The reasons this thing isn't worth as much as people are saying aren't so much about the product itself and more about the market it's in. Video games might be a hugely valuable part of your life, and my life, but a museum doesn't necessarily agree, and since they already have somewhat limited budgets, they're not likely to spend much.

Selling to a private citizen has other logistical issues. Bottom line is that people thinking this thing is worth hundreds of thousands of dollars need to think about where that money is coming from.

Different material most likely. The problem is pretty much exclusive to ABS plastic. Also notice the shade of non-yellowed plastic from the controller being plugged in.
