Youtube-gamer PewDiePie made 63 million SEK (~$7.5m) in 2014

Aren't his fans, like 12 year olds according to this thread?

So? I was drawing porn back then!

But really, I highly doubt all 38 million of his subscribers are children. He's not like Stampy that exclusively caters to kids. Even if 1% of his fanbase were adults, that's a pretty sizable amount of people.

If that 1% is from China, that's 100 million people! Sizable is an understatement.

Impressive.

It doesn't take much to make decent money off YouTube. The only two reaction channels I watch (The Reel Rejects and Tyrone Magnus) were both able to quit their jobs thanks to the money they bring in from just reacting to other videos. Neither have near the same amount of subs or views.

Just gotta think of something to do for your YT channel and make that money!

Both of those channels have over 100k+ subs and started in 2012, it's not easy getting that many subs at all.

Yeah, 100k subs is generally around the time you can quit your day job if you're uploading daily, and even then you see people in that sub range with Patreons and stuff. You're like the .001% when you got that many fans and some still can't go full time with it.

I like him.

I mean, it shocks me that with those kind of videos he can get that much amount of money but he's entertaining and likeable.

I can't stand to watch the dude's videos for more than 5 seconds, but good on him. Dude seems to work hard for it so more power to the guy.

This guy I used to work on a small gaming site with blew up shortly thereafter and now has nearly 300k subscribers. I have no clue how he's doing financially, as I haven't kept in touch with him, but I'd imagine pretty well. I think he's like 23 or something now.

There is an enormous amount of hateful comments on social media right now so let's not sink to that level and fill this thread with butthurt or jealous comments. I'm not a fan of his videos personally, but he seems like a nice guy, he's done a good job (clearly) and it shows potential for online media. And he does give away money to charity, in case someone was wondering.

There's absolutely nothing wrong with him making that kind of cash. He's providing a legitimate source of entertainment to a huge group of people, so what's wrong with him being compensated? Even if he made ten times that amount and gave none to charity there'd be nothing wrong.

I might regard him as a dick and boycott him (if I was a fan), but I wouldn't tolerate any "do gooder" Robin Hood wannabe types from taking or extorting money from him, because if that were the case he might decide to pack it all up, stop spending hours a day capturing and editing his videos and instead retire for life in his twenties. Or he could continue to pump out practically free entertainment to millions of people and be compensated based on the quality of his content and the amount of viewers it brings to his advertisers. There's no victim in that situation and millions of people, including pewdiepie obviously, benefit, so I can see no wrong.

The gaming community needs to embrace pioneers like him that help to expand public interest into the industry. The greater demand that is generated by the gaming entertainers will bring more dollars into the market and result in better cheaper games in the future.

As far as playthroughs go I don't think they take much away from purchases. I see them more as for people who might be interested in the story of a game that they wouldn't buy anyways. If playthroughs do, however, end up decreasing game sales then devs will shift focus on storytelling to gameplay elements I would imagine, and that's a welcomed move by me as I hate games that are basically interactive movies.

Its awesome he makes so much doing what he loves.

My opinion of Youtubers/streamers is mixed. On one hand, their content is the equivalent of Reality TV. They make money off the backs of other artists. On the other hand, they can be entertaining, and informative. The best of them are humble and honest. Others seem to have no grasp at how fortunate they are, and I wish they could understand what it means to work an 10 hour, 5 days a week soulcrushing job just to pay the bills.

Good for him. I don't enjoy him specifically, but I do enjoy other people who do what he does (personality driven gaming videos). I'm glad to see people becoming so successful within that "field."

Yeah, pretty much. He seems like a good dude. Although that batteries song from his Outlast playthrough is still stuck in my head, and I'll never forgive him for that.

Some put in that amount or more on their channels, even if all they're doing is playing the games and cutting up the footage so it flows well. I think Markiplier spent like 12 hours a day, 6-7 days a week working on his channel for a while until he hit it big, allowing him to slack off a tiny bit on that front. I know a guy in the 100k club that still does that (he says only 5% of the work he does on his channel is actually playing games), and he's worried as hell considering how unstable Youtube is (the algorithm could change tomorrow, unpredictable channel shut downs from false copyright strikes, etc).

I think you're making it more complicated than it actually is. I'm pretty sure the biggest gripe people have is that the effort to payout ratio is absolutely insane. These are cheap, quick, low effort, easy to make videos of some dude just playing a game and swearing a lot and for some reason he makes MILLIONS of dollars per year.

If a channel like Game Theory was this popular, you wouldn't see the same amount of hate.

Not really any different from the popular shit you get on TV. Why fund high quality drama when you can make ten 'reality' shoes for the same money that'll bring a higher return.

Nobody ever went broke underestimating the taste of the American public.

I thought Jim Sterling would be a millionaire.

Boogie2988 isn't even a millionaire. He said he would be without Adblock, though.

Angry Joe has amazing viewership, but he's not at millionaire status either. But he's close. On last report, he says he has about $800k in the bank.

Now, there is a chance these guys could be full of shit too.

Personally I can't stand PewDiePie (The Character) but Felix seems like a good dude. I hear a lot of good things about him. Just a shame I don't like his content.
Good on him though :)

Personally I'm not a fan of his videos, but I think it's great that he's been able to be so successful in a medium that the mainstream media took as a joke for the longest while.

People that hate on him are just jealous :p

he worked hard when he was starting to make videos. he was really into it... ok things changed but dont they always?

" he doesnt cares about his fans anymore."

dude... he does, he just have too many a fans to care about every single one, i mean more than a million fans... imagine you having to write one million answers AT BEST. people who saw him at the begging know how he really is. cant blame him for being busy now.

yes, i am struck with jealously. but come on. he earned the merit, he did his best, played with the right cards, just did what he knew and that worked out. cant blame him.

he is also not the stingy stupid person, first he helps charity whenever he can, with that he kills two birds, first bird is, he gets a even better image for himself. second bird is, hes doing his part to make world a better place.

the only bad thing is that URG I CANT STAND HIS VIDEOS ANYMORE. HELL THEY ARE ( always have been but jesus christ wtf now. ) REALLY... eh... UNACCEPTABLE!

Do I understand how anyone can make that much money playing games on YouTube? No. Do I envy him? Yes. But good for him.

I can't believe how big this thing is, people make millions doing yt videos about videogames. I play games everyday and I never search yt about them, I'm really out of touch.

That feeling of being an old fart. ( ._.)

Oh well, good for him. That's a nice job there.

Good for him, really mean that.

It is not something I personally like, but many others do, so why not?

People tell me he is very kind in person and towards his fans. I just don't like the hysterical attitude.

Yeah I can tell you from experience it's not easy at ALL. I'm sure the VAST majority of people don't even break 1K subs, forget 100k.

The vast majority of people don't even break 100, though a good amount of that is from giving up after a few months. 1k is just plain unreachable for a lot of channels that don't commit years to uploading.

Horse Detective

Why the long case?
The fact that some people are unable to fathom the value society puts on entertainment is baffling to me. I am very jealous of him, and would love to make money entertaining or informing people the way he does.
