Yoshi's Woolly World |OT| It's So Fluffy I'm Gonna Die!

My girlfriend has a good relationship to video games. Doesn't play them much herself apart from an adventure game here and there, but mostly she just enjoys watching.

Bought Woolly World since she always finds Yoshi so cute, and every night has turned into this now.

I can't even help her on the harder parts, she's completely hooked on every aspect of this game. Gotta admit, something truly heartwarming about Nintendo games and how they make people smile so god damn much.

And the soundtrack is oh so good.

Does she like Yoshi though? I can't really tell.
:D

Waited for this one pretty excited. Nintendo platformers are about the only games I can play in co-op with my girlfriend. First of all, it seems to be an awesome platformer with fresh and cool art style.

Unfortunately the co-op game-play just seems a tad forced or not so well designed. The second the other player falls out of the screen (which has very narrow fov as it is), character turns into a floating "bubble" and loses all his or hers yarn balls. You constantly hit each other with balls or eat each other out accidentally (which also results as loss of all collected yarn balls). Fun when it first happens, but turns quickly into a drag when gaming and levels gets more serious.

Just wish there was a timer before turning into a ball / camera zoom out / PIP window and some sort of "cant eat or interfere the other player" option.

Yup it's not co-op mode but a versus mode, haha xD

No, it is not, it is like Yoshi's Island with a yarn-look.

Transformations were common in Yoshi's Island though and the transformations here are not taken from Kirby.

You mean, transformations like in Yoshi's Island?

It's a Yoshi game. Transformations are a staple of the Yoshi platformer series. Like power ups in Mario. Sniper rifles in shooters. Drop-down assassinations in AssCreed.

You're letting the superficial similarities in art style confuse you.

I know transformations is a staple of Yoshi, it doesn't make it any less unimaginative to make another yarn looking game with similar everything, stop making yourselves dumber than you are, you know perfectly well what I'm talking about. I'm not trying to flame or anything just stating my opinion that I think it's a show of piss poor imagination from Nintendo - Why yarn again, in a platformer with transformations, again. Stop releasing the same game and think up something new instead of taking the easy route, I have the right to demand this as do you. None of you have adequately explained to me how this game is nothing like KEY

All finished now and some of the reviews make me question if they really played the full game.
It's up there with yoshi island , not quite as good but easily the best yoshi game since.

I will repeat what i said earlier and that is i wish the 2d mario games were this creative still. I got torn apart by others for saying that but this game introduces new ideas all over the place.
The ghost levels alone are extremely clever with new, yes new, ideas introduced unlike 'new' 2d mario games.

the game starts out very easy but the difficulty curve is almost prefect and the game really does get tough later on, with tough bonus levels that sit alongside the retro donkey kong ones.
I can see this game being the wii-u's biggest underrated title easily, I actually feel sorry for the developers as they clearly put 100% effort in this time and it's sad to see reviewers straight out lie in some reviews. I was pissed like everyone else about nintendo's e3 effort but that should't effect how their games are reviewed and sadly i think that's exactly what's happened in this case.
If you like platform games this title is a must and one of the best I've ever played. Amazing visuals, creative ideas introduced in almost every level and good difficulty with some bonus levels being extremely tough.
Good-feel has finally cracked amazing visuals coupled with great gameplay and i can't wait to see what they do next.

It is nothing like KEY because it plays completely differently? Moreover, even the yarn aesthetics are very different. If a game is nothing but a presentational theme to you then yes, KEY and YWW are basically the same, but if gameplay, leveldesign ideas and game structure are relevant to a game from your perspective, then they are completely different.

Yeah, I feel similarly and I think it's been long enough since I beat the game that I can say without bias that it's up there with the original for me. I'll play games like Kirby Rainbow Curse and have a good time, but I'll look back on it and say "yeah, I can see where the reviews were coming from" but this game just straight up isn't like that. It's seriously great and I don't get the mediocre reception from certain big sites, besides just wanting to take a jab at Nintendo for having a crappy E3, or too many platformers or what have you. It'd be really something if this game became more underrated than Tropical Freeze.

I know transformations is a staple of Yoshi, it doesn't make it any less unimaginative to make another yarn looking game with similar everything, stop making yourselves dumber than you are, you know perfectly well what I'm talking about. Yoshi explained it perfectly fine. It's like Yoshi's Island with a yarn look. Nobody's denying that aesthetically it takes a similar approach to KEY. But it's far from being a rehash. The mechanics are entirely different. It's just mind boggling how you can't seem to grasp this concept and just get frustrated at everyone else for repeatedly telling you that is the case.

I have read all the comments but stil i don't know how to feel about this game i was overhyped with new yoshi's island that had beautiful aesthetic but the game was horrible a big piece of trash with boring gameplay in the transformations very small levels and in general i found the game boring pretty but boring. i love the original yoshi's island and these yoshi's wooly world seems as pretty as the other one and seems to be a great game but i'm not sure if i should buy it i feel that nintendo could probably pull that way of beautiful game to see but horrible for playing

Nah i don't really care about the wool look of the game. But it's really like YI on the Snes. Nice little surprises and the exploring of the levels is well paced. Music is also really good. Yes its a slower game then a normal platformer but that is what yoshi is about. I havent played New yoshis island. But i like it better then the DS one. Which unlike most people didnt had many problems with as a game itself thought it was good fun.

Believe the comments in this thread, the game is up there with Yoshi's Island.

I think I summed it up quite well here.

Did the yarn yoshi amiibos come out in the US yet? I see them being resold on Amazon but I wasn't sure if people were just reselling the ones from other regions.

NA bundle pre-order isn't available yet, right?

Just making sure I'm looking in the right places...I need to get this as soon as it's available!

Collected everything. Took 29 hours so not a short game for 2D platformer.

Have to say I really enjoyed Woolly World. Wii U has awesome 2D local co-op library. All the new super mario titles, DKC returns and tropical freeze, Rayman origins and legends, Wii kirby games and now also Woolly World. Sorry if I forgot something.

Can someone tell me where the spray fish is? I've done everything else in this game, but I just cannot find that damn fish :/.

Err...those fish that squirt water in either the second or third (I think second and I'm too lazy to check) level of world 5? Dunno if that's them, but that sounds like what they'd be called.

Thank you very much, indeed, level 5-2. Thank you! Now I just wonder if I should ocntinue playing until I have 999.999 "coins". Considering I'm at 540k, this would probably take another 30 hours though :D.

Get good.

No but seriously. It's just about learning not to wildly shoot/eat things. Also it's not that big of a deal if you accidentally eat eachother. For one, the eaten player can get their yarn balls back if they don't fall down a pit or get taken by the other player. Two, instead of spitting them out (which can be hard to do sometimes without killing them), you can make them into an egg and they can 'break out' by mashing A.

I wish there was a little bit of camera zoom-out sometimes, but I also think that would have made some sections a bit too easy. The fact you have to wait for your partner and can't just wildly run around makes things more interesting. A lot of secrets are positioned in such a way that both players have to get there or one will die. It's all about teamwork, staying together without eating/shooting eachother willy-nilly!
Co-op is really interesting in this game. Some things are made easier and some more difficult. Overall it's a great experience I think. Me and the GF are on World 6 now and she is all sad that it's almost over.

The two things that bother me in co-op:

* those jump-blocks you have to bounce on. it's hard to time it so you both bounce up at the same time, and if you don't one player dies.

* the camera will sometimes follow the 'wrong' player, for example staying on a player that is falling down a pit instead of the one that is succesfully jumping on platforms. I think it's biased towards following player 1 but I wish the camera was 'smarter'.

I'm seeing quite a few comparisons to Yoshi's Island on the SNES. Is the level design in Woolly's World similar to it in the fact collectibles tend to be off the beaten path giving you a reason to break off from that path, and explore? That, and how does the level length fair in this game compared to Yoshi's Island?

Finished up the game today. 100% on everything (all collectibles including bonus levels, all Yoshi's, all enemies and all music in the Scrapbook Theatre).

As you may have guessed, I enjoyed it immensely! It was also a fantastic palette cleanser between long play sessions of Bloodborne on my way towards the platinum trophy for that game!

I've completed Yoshi's Island countless times so I cannot compare length properly anymore, but the game took me about 30 hours and then an additional 4 hours to complete the museum - because I'm quite greedy with eggs and you need to hit enemies with eggs to get their entry. Which wasn't clear to me before it was too late. I'd say the level design is mid-way between Yoshi's Island and Yoshi's New Island with quite a few hidden cloud items like in YNI in the first half, but also quite a few extra area & quick reaction items like in YI.

@Robin64: Yeah, I prefer the German name a lot then. In case you did not know, it's a reference to the movie "Little Shop of Horrors" - which by the way is an amazing movie.

Yeah, Audrey is a great name. Oddly the German version is the only one with a name, it's just Naval Piranha/Big Piranha/Belly-Button Piranha/Great Piranha elsewhere.

Missed opportunity then ;). At the time Nintendo had a very creative translation team in Germany with some obscure at times, but most of the time funny translations. I miss the Moyse translations.

That's quite a controversial opinion, going by what I have seen on the net over the years^^

I enjoyed them too at the time, btw. :)

"NIE OHNE KONDOM!"

Funny you know about that :D. Yeah, in Link's Awakening they really went nuts.

@TheMoon: Yes, it certainly is controversial, but since Nintendo stories are nonsensical anyway, I like to get a laugh out of the translations even if it is not too accurate. I don't need accuracy for an alibi-story. Of course, had they not been so liberal with their translations, it would have been easier to tell the guy above where the seed patch is...

Played level 1-7, the part where he turns into a motorcycle is super cool, rest was kinda boring.

I think I'm jut sick of the yoshi island egg aiming mechanic at this point. I got so bored of it in one level that I started skipping everything.

Game is adorably gorgeous though, the wool theme is amazing. It's like that wii kirby gamer all over again, best game too look at, but boring to play.

Is there a challenging post game in this game like some of the Marios (in particular 3D Land/World) or is most of the challenge just from collecting everything in the levels to the end?

the latter. also, you unlock (usually harder) bonus levels (as is the norm for yoshi games) by collecting all the stuff in a world.

You get six S-levels, one for each world for collecting all flowers in each. They - with the exception of the fifth - are quite challenging. Also there is
Boss Tent and one additional S-level if you also get all flowers in the S-levels of each world, both being quite challenging also
. The main challenge outside these bonus levels comes from looking for the items though.

As someone else said, it's more of the latter, however there is
a remixed boss section where you fight all of the bosses again to earn the last available yarn/Yoshi's. The bosses are much faster in this mode and therefore more challenging than in the main game, though there's nothing remotely close to Champions Road difficulty or anything like that.

Bleh, I meant to clarify average individual level length for Woolly World. >.<

Thanks for all the info! Sounds kind of like Donkey Kong Country Returns/Tropical Freeze with each world getting a hard level to go through after collecting all the KONG letters. Is that a good comparison then?
