Treasure Island (Takarajima) - Episodes 5 - 8
Past Episodes: Episodes 1 - 4

The show continues to be great. The music is really a highlight for me and takes me back to those days when I watched Macross so of course nothing but good vibes are in the air while I watch this. From the OP which fills me with excitement to the ED which is bittersweet and emotional, reminding me of the impeding end to all of the music in between, its all great.
The animation is also a highlight in this series, very painterly and beautiful. A lot of it is static, like many old series, but to be fair it’s pretty much a staple of the late Osamu Dezaki (the director) and if you’ve seen Ashita no Joe (Tomorrow’s Joe) and such, you’ll know what I mean. It’s generally known as the pastel freeze frame but Osamu dubs it postcard memories and I’m a fan of it in these types of shows as it really drives home the childlike nature of them and the adventures that awaits, almost fairy-tale like in its presentation. It’s a cost cutting measure no doubt but in the end it works well here and is incorporated wonderfully and blends in with the painterly visuals.
Osamu Dezaki is actually a really fascinating director that brings along many of his signature techniques across his whole portfolio, almost like a stamp making sure the viewer knows that this is undoubtedly his work. His series from a visual standpoint are unmistakably his and striking, making subtle use of dutch angles in order to disorientate the viewer, a use of low key lighting, with deep shadows and high contrast in order to create a sense of isolation and loneliness and transitioning from detailed paintings to normal animation and vice versa. One technique in particular was the use of negative colors which was incorporated in a flashback and came across as very really striking.
I’m really enjoying the story so far. It’s very simple and easy to follow but fun all the same. Things seem to be getting into motion and the introductions are all done and dusted so I think things will get more interesting from now onwards. I really look forward to watching more and seeing how it goes on.

Working!! Season 2 1-8

I think Takenashi is getting more and more nuts the longer he works at the restaurant. He's not even a straight man anymore, now everyone else is his straight man.

I like how everyone is like "wow it is weird that you're making Popura be your fake sister for a day" despite the fact they intercepted him on his way to his date with Inami, ruined his clothes and forced him to cross-dress instead.

Not the manga though. The anime is completely mediocre because Studio Pierrot butchered it but the manga is a different story.

The manga is fantastic, I agree. Kind of a travesty what Pierrot did to it.

I think it's a joke about all those shows being bad. At least Elfen Lied is :p

I wouldn't be surprised if some people actually thought they were great. I mean, look at AoT. It's not bad per se, but it's not that great of an anime either outside of a few key moments.

I knew that Umaru-chan was going to be good but it easily has the best OP this season. Now on to the rest of the episode!

Mobile Suit Gundam 0080: War in the Pocket 06 END
006417r5k7p.png

You're the real monster.
What a disgusting ending. A terrorist responsible for death of ~250 men and women and countless frogs gets away scot free. Terrible writing where the bad guys escape to live another day that just shows the poor skills and inexperience of the man behind the script. /DTL

I've already expressed the extent of my feelings for the main protagonist of this story but let me repeat myself. Alfred, also known as Al or alternatively "twat" is an absolutely insufferable piece of poorly excreted crap that made almost every scene that featured him a challenge to get through. I get that for his character arc or the story itself to even exist, he had to begin as naive brat but christ, there's a limit to how far you can and should push the childhood naivety. If the starting point of your character development is a severe case of brain idiocy, one that would make fucking Shirou blush and makes my suspense of disbelief crash completely, then I'm probably not going to be able to care about it very much. Step aside Relena, you have just been dethroned as the worst Gundam character.

I did like parts of the finale, the twist with the nuclear attack was a neat narrative device to drive the home the nonsense and futility of it all. Bernie's message was good too, I can't say I managed to give a shit about him but it would and should have been the last scene of this series, not those cringeworthy kids. The climax itself was unfortunately ruined by the horrid choice music. It was pretty bad in general and in decisive moment, it managed to suck any tension out of the situation.

I really wanted to like this show and knowing that it seems to be one of the more well regarded outings of the Gundam franchise, I really tried but I'm sorry, I just couldn't do it. The loss of innocence and the "war is bad " theme has been done to death in a variety of mediums and the only new thing War in the Pocket brings to this game is the awful protagonist and the cheesy and hamfisted way they manage to deliver their message.

I guess you could say that WoitP at least, unlike Gundam Wind, respects your time. Or that the dialogue and the flow of scenes at least makes some sense so it's better than Reconguista. I suppose that means that Mobile Suit Gundam 0080 is the second best gundam show that I've seen but good God, it'a faint praise.

The show may be not be very good, but it still has one of my favourite OPs ever and for that reason alone it has a special place in my heart. I remember the manga being pretty decent too, and it even had an actual ending (even if there were elements of said ending that... stretched the suspension of my disbelief, so to speak.)

Seeing that (near) injustice makes me SO glad Kaoru Mori's work is so well respected in France (and how some of that love permeated into Spain as well)... lately Bride Stories is store-front material of most specialized BD shops, and deservedly so!

Man...the more I am liking the show, the more I am actually want to read her other work of manga now. It look like it's something I am very fond in. I give her a credit, she does know how to pull the right string to make a very good romance story here.

Sky Wizards Academy Episode 1:

I am really struggling to find any words to describe this other then completely average, not picked up for more episode watching.

I don't know why a news reporting company like ANN can't hire transcribers to go to all of these panels.

I mean, well, it's ANN. You can't expect them to do something like actual news reporting.

Pictures of people (read young girls) in cosplay gets more page views than summaries of these panels. Additionally, their episode reviews would get more than any studio other than Ghibli and maybe Trigger.

I'd love to see transcriptions of more panels as well, but it's not financially worthwhile for the time/staff investment.

As others have said, I have a huge amount of gratitude for your reports.

Akagami no Shirayukihime 1

The last Shirayuki Hime I saw had blue hair. Just saying. Nice all around. Looks good, and the music is great. Shirayuki seems like a decent lead.

This is me while I was watching Umaru-chan.
I expected to enjoy the show but not as much as I did. The staff have a good pedigree with comedies and it shines through here with the direction and comedic timing on point.

We're finally getting a serious arc from Gintama which means that it'll be at its best story wise. The new characters have strong introductions which has me invested in their story. Just because it's serious doesn't mean the jokes end. We got some DBZ jokes and since the whole arc features a reaper character it's obviously full of Bleach jokes. I'm interested in hearing more of Gin's past since he's on the list of criminals at the end. Lastly, I hope someone keeps track of how many times Gin's nipple gets stolen and put back. Poor nipple.

A perfect highschool girl who's secretly nerdy with a pushover brother that's passively annoyed by her antics. Getting a bit of Deja vu.

Fell pretty flat for me. All the jokes seem to be one note and not especially clever. Kinda wish the brother was more like the Watamote brother? He's sort of a non-character. It wasn't all bad though— it just wasn't especially notable in any one way. I'll probably give it another episode.

Good OP, and an ED that really shows the series' hand. Lol.

Great job! Thanks for the report.
lol at trigger panel. You know, after seeing how hectic anime industry work, i believe it when he mention not watching the final product yet....

Overlord 1

Hmm, okay, might give it a watch due to the way protagonist look. Can't really tell if it's going to be good or not based on one episode...

Shimoneta 1

Can't wait to watch uncensored version, on the other hand, there some kind of irony when a show about fighting censorship is full of censor.

Not really a ringing endorsement there.

[Gintama] - 279

As I've mentioned earlier, the art for this season under this new studio has looked really rough in a number of episodes. Therefore I am happy to report that this episode looks like a significant improvement on that front. Oddly, however, it doesn't really look like Gintama:

I'm still not entirely convinced by the direction, however, which features odd framing, apparently pointless insert shots and predictable cinematography.
