It's just so disruptive. Will the next CEO be able to carry out the company's future plans competently?

I am seriously legitimately upset. This man is the reason why I wanted to develop video games. This man is the reason why I play video games today. He gave me my favorite hobby and my favorite past time. If it wasnt for him, i daresay i wouldnt be the man I am today loving video games and the joys of it (bringing people together, the stories, etc etc).

I got a nintendo at age 4 as a gift, it was due to this man. I am age 26 now. I still play videogames thanks to this wonderful man. He sparked my love for video games and he kept it going for so long. I was a nintendo "fanboy" for a long time, but reality I fell in love with video games thanks to nintendo and the things this man did.

I had the pleasure to meet this one once in my life. I didnt speak much with him, but meeting him was enough. The man has a wonderful aura about him.

I am genuinely upset. The Video Game Industry lost a true legend, a wonderful man, who did so much for the industry and everyone at nintendo.

May he Rest in Piece.

Very sad. I loved Mr. Iwata on the Nintendo Direct-he had a warmth and sincerity that made me love to watch his videos. I over the way he did the "Direct" hand motion.

Well, the fact he couldn't come to events and they would find ways around reminded me a lot of Jobs towards the end so it's not exactly surprising (it did honestly feel like they were trying to hide how sick he really was these past few years. I mean the fact he couldn't seem to travel and yet they'd keep claiming it was just a passing illness... and this being a very repeat thing... yeah... seemed a lot like how it was with Apple. Except Apple had way more people speculating and not believing them. And I'm guessing this happened faster than they expected as Apple I think finally had to admit Jobs was sicker than they wanted to let on where as Nintendo never seemed to have to get to that point).

I'm not a Nintendo fan but he seemed like a really good guy. I respected how he seemed to want to do right by his employees (Taking a pay cut to keep from lay offs and before that refusing lay offs though people said he should).

I'm very sad to hear this.

I can't believe this has just happened. I wasn't too acquainted with Nintendo stuff or him, but I still find myself tearing up knowing that gaming has lost a great man.

Wow, that is awful. My condolences to his family, friends and loved ones.

A man that had a vision and drove for it, no matter the odds. Few people with that kind of conviction left.

From a year ago:

Thank you very much for your continued extraordinary support of us. I am Satoru Iwata, President of the company.
Today, there is one thing that I would like to share with you.
Recently, as the result of one of my routine physical examinations, an issue was detected. Following a more detailed examination, a growth was found in my bile duct.
In general, it is said that a bile duct growth can be difficult-to-treat, partly because of the difficulty of detecting it early. In my case, luckily, it was detected very early and I had no symptoms.
I was counseled that removal at an early stage would be the desirable medical option. Therefore I had surgery last week, and I came through it well, as predicted.
I have already resumed my business by email and by other means, but it is anticipated that a little more time is needed for me to return to my regular work schedule.
As a result, I have no choice but to miss the company’s very important activity, the Annual General Meeting of Shareholders, to be held this month. As the president of the company, I regret that I cannot attend the meeting. However, I understand that I have to prioritize my medical treatment and to recover as soon as possible so that I will again be able to do my best to help the company to grow. I hope that you understand.
Best Regards,
Satoru Iwata

Holy crap! Today's real megaton is that more than two people can have the same first name.
Welp. Incredibly sad and shocking news. Hard to believe we've seen the last ever Direct featuring him, not to mention there'll be no more Iwata Asks :(
