I am absolutely stunned,

I knew he has surgery last year but just looking a little skinner he looked fine. Even after the latest Direct he looked good.

Why didn't he retire knowing his days were numbered? Spend his last days with his family instead of working.

I am sad and a little angry, this is not a good thing to start the day with.

RIP iwata you will be greatly missed.

Hours later and I'm still choking up over this... And yet I can't stay away from this thread.

It feels comfortable in a weird way...

Fuck :(

I'd rather he stuck by his original tweet instead of coming back like this because some people can't understand that not everyone agrees with how people do things with their lives while they are still alive. With that being said, I am quite curious as to who will be put in Iwata's place. I would say Reggie, but I honestly think Nintendo wouldn't be down with having an American run the company.

RIP Mr. Iwata. You challenged convention, trends, and ultimately changed the industry in ways that no one will ever truly appreciate.

Well, he's now resting with gunpei yokoi and Hiroshi Yamauchi.

Can someone draw Gunpei and Hiroshi inviting Iwata into the pearly gates?

I decided to draw a small picture as a token to the massive amount of respect I had for Iwata:
UzSgx0g.jpg

I can't even imagine where I'd be without his influence. Kirby's been my favorite character since a young age and growing up to learn his role in other games I've come to adore has been had a huge impact on me. He might have been a CEO of a major company, but he was one of us and never hid it from us.

This is really awesome. I'm having a hard time keeping up with this thread because of posts like this where someone manages to express what I'm feeling better than I can, and then I just tear up and stare into space and think about how many lives Mr. Iwata has touched and how so many people, myself included, who've never met him, can think of him as a constant and friendly and joyful presence in their lives. Sadly, I think its a presence we took for granted because how often did we reflect upon his effect on us? I know that I rarely did, much to my shame, but on the occasions I did, I was always amazed and appreciative of his energy, passion, and drive to make games and make sure we all had fun playing them.

And I'm gonna stop now because it seems to be raining again.

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
This puts Nintendo's recent proactiveness in a possible different light:Iwata knew he didn't have much time, so he needed to act as fast as possible before...sorry, can't say it ;_;

He was diagnosed with cancer last year, lied about treating it and pretty much worked with what time left he was given by the doctors.

Do we know this? I mean, we know he has died from the cancer, but that's the thing with cancer, you never know if you have beaten it. It might well be that the doctors thought they maybe have cut all of the cancer but were wrong...

Takeda or Miyamoto are the smart bets.

I don't know what I can say that hasn't been said, but I guess I just want to throw my thoughts out anyway. Iwata was a leader the likes of which you can rarely find. He was one that knew intimately both why people enjoyed Nintendo's products and they kind of hard work it took to make them. He had an appreciation for the work itself and always seemed to give creators the space they needed to make the stuff they were truly capable of making.

That kind of attitude came through in the Directs and Iwata Asks. When he was excited about something, it didn't just feel like corporate shilling. I guess that's what makes his passing much harder as a consumer. He wasn't just a financial guy, but also someone involved in making the things I've loved through my childhood and into my adult life possible. He leaves a unique legacy few people can. His work both as an executive and just a regular creative programmer are things that changed the way I played games forever, and I surely won't ever be able to forget them.

I guess I'm writing all this to say, Thanks Iwata. Wherever you are.

Look at it in a positive light: he paved the way for the company's future, and they'll carry on in his stead.

this shit right here is why console fanboys dont make sense
everyones friends with everybody
the console wars are all a lie

Yeah, the caring for the well-being, life, and respect for someone goes beyond such petty things like console wars.

Just because someone is a rival/competitor doesn't mean you can't respect them for what they do and as a person.

Well I was suspicious when he introduced Morimoto and let him do the last Direct.

Miyamoto? I thought he was just a game designer?

So was Iwata. Better someone whose games are their life be in charge.

Reggie is a PR mouthpiece for NOA. He has little to do with any decisions made about the company.

My guess would be Genyo Takeda. He and Miyamoto are temporary managing directors, and I don't think Miyamoto would want the CEO position.

It's like a piece of my childhood was just taken away. I'm at the age where I see more funerals than marriages. Getting old sucks. Cancer SUCKS.

Morimoto is a candidate. Same type of roots as Iwata (just from GameFreak, rather than HAL). And he took over the Japanese directs, so he's been working closely with Iwata as of recent and I don't doubt Iwata had the foresight to plan out his succession given his health.

all those pics really got me...

and to quote one of the posts here.
it's really sad that one of the last few things he told all the gamers was
"Sorry... we will do better" (on Nintendo's E3 showing this year)

I hope so. He created Punch-Out!! and StarTropics. I have great respect for this man.

Anyway, probably not the best time or thread to discuss this.
