Apparently bile duct tumors are very rare but very deadly. A cancer that you don't realize you have until it's too advanced.

What an incredible shame. Such an influential industry presence and generally nice, sincere man gone at a young age because of something like this. So so sad.

I wasn't previously aware of how lethal biliary cancer was. When he was ill, went into surgery and seemingly recovered, I thought that was that. The hardest-hitting aspect of Iwata's death, to me, was how sudden it was. I was greatly saddened by Terry Pratchett's death earlier this year, but it was balmed with the knowledge that we knew it was coming for years. Considering Iwata was present for the shareholder's meeting just two weeks ago, his illness surely took a sudden turn.

I feel as though I'm over the hardest part of the mourning process now. I'm looking forward to hearing more memorials over the week, too. It's easy to forget how other executives, such as Reggie and most-certainly Miyamoto, must be feeling right now. They were all obviously very close in a way that goes beyond business associations, considering all the gags and skits they all did together.

In the future, I hope Nintendo doesn't lose its sense of playfulness with Iwata. I hope we can still laugh during Nintendo Directs even though his influence over them has ceased.

I don't know if already posted, but NoA updated its press site with a more recent image of Mr. Iwata (this photo was taken on June 23 this year):

He lost so much weight, it definitely shows that something was wrong.

As I know not everyone reads every post, please stop posting about the NeoGAF logo. We would like to not have to say this again.

Rereading his old interviews it's still hard to stomach that he's gone. Like in a few weeks he's back with a new Direct, or a new Iwata Asks. Or in a few months a gaming journo people will ask him about NX and he said "Please wait until next E3."

We're not going to see Iwata unveil NX out of his suit pocket ._.

Maybe but like other said his cancer prevented him to get nutriments from the food... he was so fine looking last year before his cancer... *hurt*

Fuck cancer!

I just keep crying every few hours, poor guy. Thousands will attend his funeral.

It doesn't seem like Iwata was the kind of guy who would have wanted folks to be sad right now. I've been trying to think of some way that we can come together and do something fun to remember Iwata. If you guys were going to put on a Balloon Fight tournament throughout the week, how would you do it? We could do a scorechase in Balloon Trip, maybe.

Rest in peace, Mr. Iwata.

He gave us so much through Nintendo and remained true as a gamer by leading the company using 'Play and fun' as the driving mechanism when thinking the audience.

Itoi's text on Iwata's passing is bittersweet. Rest in Peace, Iwata.

If there is something to take out of this it is the fact that people seem to stick together on this one. After all the crap surrounding gaming for the last year where people have flung crap on each other back and forth it's heartwarming to see so many people (including competitors like Sony and Microsoft) set aside their differences and mourn a great loss.

Like so many other people I grew up on Nintendo's hardware and I really doubt I would spend so much time gaming if I would never experience many of the games Iwata was involved in.

Thank you, Iwata. Thank you!

May I ask why?

I immediately asked the art team if they could come up with something upon hearing the news. That being said, the posts yelling and demanding a logo change have in some cases been extremely rude and inappropriate, and the current Pride logo was intended to run through July to celebrate marriage equality in the United States, which is an important sentiment in its own right. If the art team creates something we're happy with then a special memorial logo may be uploaded. Please remain calm and let us run the site on our own terms, and do no derail the thread around logo change talk, either way. Thanks.

Hopefully not. It should be a private event.

Well maybe, I don't know, I don't know private Iwata, I only know public Iwata and I can say personally that lots of people both at Nintendo and who never knew him would want to pay their respects. Wasn't Hiroshi Yamauchi's funeral a grand affair or did I imagine that?

In seeking to make a bit cleaner version of a tribute NeoGAF logo, and in respect of the amazing painting by phileep, I put this together:

Changed the GAF colors to something reminiscent of HAL Laboratory's logo.

Individual images:

They're the same dimensions as the current pride logo.

Couple notes to reiterate:

1. The dark one with the light grey text is specifically for the dark NeoGAF theme. There needs to be two versions.

2. NeoGAF has already stated that their art team is at work on a tribute logo that will be evaluated. However the Pride logo was scheduled to remain through the end of July, and that will be a factor as well.

I was thinking of paying tribute to Mr. Iwata by making a pilgrimage to Nintendo World in NYC (closest location to me rather than Seattle or Vancouver).

Anyone else here who are doing the same, do you think they will have a place where we can leave our condolences?

If I don't make the trip I will do a drawing on miiverse like this :

I thought this was some sick joke at first, but its really not. The industry has truly loss someone who actually genuinely loved it. I feel an incredible sense of sadness. :(

Rest in peace man and thank you for all the memories.
