This has surely been posted already, but this is one anecdote that really makes me respect the man.

http://www.escapistmagazine.com/news/view/125717-Satoru-Iwata-Refuses-to-Layoff-Nintendo-Employees
"I sincerely doubt employees who fear that they may be laid off will be able to develop software titles that could impress people around the world." - Iwata
Thanks for posting this. I was going to dig up the quote from the investor briefings, but I couldn't while I was at work.
I spent the day following this thread instead of working, but wasn't able to post.

I've used it a lot over the years. I think it shows that the 'Nintendo Difference' wasn't just about the content of their games, and I think it goes some small way to explain why so many of us are so upset by the death of a man we never met in person.

Earlier in this thread I posted my initial condolences, and a little over 12 hours later I'm still shaken by a profound sense of loss. I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Iwata, but you could always tell when other people spoke of him how much respect he had earned from nearly everyone he ever came into contact with. The personal stories that have been posted since his death have further cemented his legacy of putting people and relationships first instead of what might have been the most lucrative. He always took Nintendo's failures right on the chin, refused to deflect accountability, and famously refused to lay off workers in spite of investor presure. I will always hold him in the highest regard for being prioritizing art and people ahead of profit and I hope that sense of humility and humanitarianism remains in Nintendo's culture forever.

I've been reprocessing a lot of my careless statements over the years when it comes to opinions on Nintendo's priorities. Primarily, I think I owe Mr. Iwata a posthumous apology. I never fairly considered the pressure he was under to preserve Nintendo's reputation, or the responsibility he must have felt to the children that grow up on Nintendo's products, or his passion and commitment to his vision for what games are supposed to be. So, Mr. Iwata, I understand now and I hope you can forgive me. Rest in peace.

This made me tear up, but at the same time feel weirdly better.

That's actually not the HQ, it's their Kyoto R&D building.

Which is kind of even more appropriate, since we're remembering him as he wanted, as a creator, not an executive.
And I'm crying again. This is absolutely incredible.

Only learned that HAL isnt owned by Nintendo. They have been tied at the hip for so long I just assumed it was a part of Nintendo.

Also whats the deal with that logo. Its a dog keeping eggs warm?

Still shaken up by this, but at least I managed to stop crying. He went far too soon. But it's good to see most people paying their respects. If anyone deserved respect in this industry, it's Iwata. He, at least, remembered what games are supposed to be: fun. A word the industry shies away from nowadays.

Couple notes to reiterate:

1. The dark one with the light grey text is specifically for the dark NeoGAF theme. There needs to be two versions.

2. NeoGAF has already stated that their art team is at work on a tribute logo that will be evaluated. However the Pride logo was scheduled to remain through the end of July, and that will be a factor as well.

I know that the GAF team is working on their own thing, but I'm glad that you liked my painting enough to use it for your mock. I appreciate it!

Anyway I've been in this thread all day and I really don't know how I'm supposed to get any work done at the office.

Why are strippers at the U.N. bad when they're great at strip clubs???

Mr. Iwata is gone, but it will be years before his impact on both Nintendo and the full video game industry will be fully appreciated. He was a strong leader for our company, and his attributes were clear to most everyone: Intelligence, creativity, curiosity and sense of humor. But for those of us fortunate enough to work closely with him, what will be remembered most were his mentorship and, especially, his friendship. He was a wonderful man. He always challenged us to push forward…to try the new…to upset paradigms—and most of all, to engage, excite and endear our fans. That work will continue uninterrupted.

Over half a day later, the news still hurts. I've said and thought things about Iwata in the past in regards to his role at Nintendo, but I won't go any further than that. It feels insignificant to how he held himself. This man represented Nintendo for over a decade. As its leader, he tried to live a Nintendo life, to show us how fun Nintendo games should be. I don't think anyone can replicate that.

This sucks, and I don't think the pain is going to subside anytime soon.

Def a sad day for anybody part of the video game industry and especially for his family. I just want to thank you Mr. Iwata for all of the great memories you have brought to me and my family.

I am trying really hard not to shed tears at work... ;~;

However the Pride logo was scheduled to remain through the end of July, and that will be a factor as well.

There's an easy solution to this. Put the Iwata tribute logo on as soon as it is ready and leave it there for, I don't know, 2 weeks? Then put the pride logo back on and leave it there for an extra 2 weeks after July to make up for the time it wasn't there. Everybody's happy.

Guys, I'm on my way to Nintendo of America HQ. I will leave this somewhere. I just want to pay tribute to a man who brought us so much joy.

Dealing with the loss of someone you cared about is something I'm still not used to, so don't know what else to do.
I've dealt with loss and grief myself, but this one has hit me pretty hard, especially for not personally knowing him. Leaving something out can help, so make sure you do it in a spot where others can join. Seems the memorials are growing in number.

Thank you, GAF, for helping me realize exactly why I love this man so much.

The Directs, the Iwata Asks, the E3 shenanigans, the messages to fans, so much more... He cared about games, his partners, and gamers first. That was clearer than anything else in this industry.

Whatever happens to Nintendo in the immediate future, I don't think we need to worry for the slightly more distant future of the industry. Iwata's influence will be around for a long time in us gamers whose hearts he made smile.

Hate to be a bother but would someone mind putting an Iwata ribbon on my avi as well?

I'm still in such disbelief that he's really gone. Here's to his legacy, may he live on in the hearts of his fans, colleagues, family and of course, Nintendo.

Visiting the Nintendo World Store to hang out for a bit in NYC.

Anyone else going to head up there today? I'll definitely be there after 6, 6:30. If you want to meet up, PM me, I think that'd be a nice thing to do.

The thread goes fast but I think the above should be placed in the OP.

Thank You.

"That work will continue uninterrupted."

I love the sound of that. Iwata was such a strong leader, those who worked with him know his vision and efforts can't be deterred even after his passing. They'll make sure his legacy continues.

Man, to leave this world knowing others will carry on your vision and direction, as well as how many people you inspired must be a great way to go.

Clearly a man who took pride and joy in what he did.

Terribly tragedy and loss for our medium... Thank you for everything, Mr. Iwata.

Rest in peace.
