Love this thread, so I thought I may as well contribute some pics too:

The Falling Man

The_Falling_Man.jpg

The Falling Man is a photograph taken by Associated Press photographer Richard Drew of a man falling from the North Tower of the World Trade Center at 9:41:15 a.m. during the September 11 attacks in New York City. The subject of the image, whose identity remains uncertain, was one of the people trapped on the upper floors of the skyscraper who either fell searching for safety or jumped to escape the fire and smoke

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Falling_Man

How hard must it have been to jump from the WTC to escape the fires? Impossible decision.

I can't even wrap my head around pictures like this. How did all these people get there? Getting all those people in that one place must've taken half a day to assemble at the very least. Where were people using the bathroom?

Too much hype to use the bathroom.

Also, this thread is amazing - I love it!

Here are some pics of Manila during the Spanish occupation. Most of the old city (Intramuros) was destroyed by the Americans to flush out Japanese soldiers hiding there in the Battle of Manila. The old city could have been spared if they didnt do the air bombings but they want to end the war on the city immediately. It levelled the old city to the ground with just a church spared.

I'm fascinated by seeing historic figures when they were younger. It's an interesting (and occasionally eerie) reminder of youthful innocence.

A young Yamamoto Isoroku, as a student at Harvard University from 1919-1921.

For those unaware, he'd later go on to become one of the greatest Naval officers in Japanese history. Due to his time studying/living in the US, he was personally opposed to unprovoked war with the country.
Although there is no documented confirmation, he's reputed to have made this classic statement after the bombing of Pearl Harbor: "I fear all we have done today is to awaken a great, sleeping giant and fill him with a terrible resolve."

Wasn't this televised? I remember my dad telling me about it. He was watching it on TV while my brother and I were playing in the living room. We were little kids at the time. I guess my dad yelled out, "Holy shit!!" then took us out of the room.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.

Live footage of your suicide is a pretty shitty legacy to leave to your children to watch.

Yeah, his speech is haunting.

If I recall correctly, I believe the charges against him was false and being made up by someone just to screw him over.

I'm not sure if it was televised live. It may have intended to be, but I can't confirm. It was definitely video recorded and photographed. A video can be found on YouTube, but as you can imagine it is HIGHLY GRAPHIC and disturbing.

In the short video recording, he gives a short written speech before handing out a series of envelopes to his advisors before pulling out a thick manila envelope that contained the revolver seen in the photo. He says immediately, "Please, please leave this room if this will... if this will affect you." Gasps and pleas of "Budd no..." can be heard. As some of the press mean and women move around, either to exit or to move toward Budd with continued pleas, he says "Don't, don't, don't... this will hurt someone... please don't..." In one quick movement he puts the barrel in his mouth and pulls the trigger.

Arguably one of the most profound and shocking public suicides in history caught on film.

Holy shit this is bad ass. I'm stealing this design

It's actually a photo taken some time in the 1960's by the Dutch photographer Cor Jaring (http://translate.google.co.uk/trans.../nl.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cor_Jaring&prev=search).
Photo was taken as part of a protest/political movement in Amsterdam: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Provo_(movement)#The_White_Plans

The attitude to death was so different then - in a large part due to much higher rates of infant mortality. Parents would often pose a dead child for one last picture with its siblings, as though it were still alive.

Adults would be propped up - either by relatives (as here) or by wooden frames. You can often see the bottom of the frame in pictures.

So creepy to modern eyes.

Last photo of Joseph P. Kennedy, Jr. (Elder brother of John F. Kennedy) He was killed during Operation Aphrodite, that made use of unmanned, explosive-laden Army Air Forces Boeing B-17 Flying Fortress and Navy PB4Y-1 Liberator bombers, that were deliberately crashed into their targets under radio control. These aircraft could not take off safely on their own, so a crew of two would take off and fly to 2,000 feet (610 m) before activating the remote control system, arming the detonators and parachuting from the aircraft. As planned, Kennedy and Willy remained aboard as the BQ-8 completed its first remote-controlled turn at 2,000 feet near the North Sea coast. Kennedy and Willy removed the safety pin, arming the explosive package, and Kennedy radioed the agreed code Spade Flush, his last known words. Two minutes later (and well before the planned crew bailout, near RAF Manston), the Torpex explosive detonated prematurely and destroyed the Liberator, killing Kennedy and Willy instantly. Wreckage landed near the village of Blythburgh in Suffolk, England, causing widespread damage and small fires, but no injuries on the ground. According to one report, a total of 59 buildings were damaged in a nearby coastal town.

Great contributions. Thanks for not making them too graphic. Some fuck always ruins these type threads by turning it tasteless after a few pages.
