There are some super unenthusiastic lines in the dub. It's not all bad, combat lines are mostly fine, but some of the cutscenes are pretty bleh, especially the comic stuff. And the grunts when running...really need either major delay between grunts or to be removed entirely. They just go "UH UH UH UH UH UH" constantly which is incredibly awkward when you're running around with no enemies.

And there's some really awkward stuff like Kagura doing a pose and saying something in Japanese with english subtitles...in the dub. Not sure what that's about. It's always so incredibly awkward it must be intentional but...I dunno, I guess I'm not the market for it. Are they trying to mimic the "japanese person says something in english to be cool" thing? Because I don't really think that works the other way at all.

This is what I was worried about as well. There are too many idiosyncrasies to Kagura's voice work in JPN that just wouldn't translate. That weird growling GNYAN she throws into some of her syllables. her terrible engrish. None of this would translate.

That's exactly what we were trying to do, and I respectfully disagree with your assessment. ;) Heheheh...

I think Kagura's voice turned out amazing, and her bad Japanese lines in place of the bad English in the original are absolutely some of my favorite moments in the entire dub. "Oi, mogra... koroshte yah-roo!" still gets a chuckle out of me every time I hear it. ;)

I think the Kagura stuff is just playing up the camp of the game. Kagura by far to me seems like the standout character of the bunch.

Kagura is the Dante of this game. She's the Rayne of this game, it's utterly nuts situation and she's making light of it. She sets the tone of the game much lighter due to her antics. I like that she's like that.

Had no idea this was out already. Went straight to Amazon and grabbed a copy. Should be some good fun!

Good:

Combat is good, two bosses are good, a lot of shit to unlock, a lot of stuff to do, practice mode, etc.

Bad:

Enemies are like punching bags.

Score:

Banana split/10 = Buy the physical copy ... Now.

Reposting from the other thread: anyone else's PS4 slowing down to a crawl after trying to open the digital manual? I have to reboot it to get it back to normal, just closing the tab doesn't help.

Does the digital version have the banana split costumes? I was hoping to review this one but my fellow editor sniped the review code from me and my GS ordered 10 copies yet all of them seem to have sold out already.

They're super cheap. like 2.99. I got them for the hell of it.

Yes, retail version has a free code for the Banana Split "costume", an OST (not sure on how many tracks) & an artbook (not sure on how many pages).

Maybe worth putting in the OT?

Too late, someone linked it in a previous thread. All I have to say is looolll they KNEW why they did that.

Does every current retail version in NA come with all of this stuff? If so, I'll probably just bite the bullet and pick it up.

EDIT: Looks like it. Time to find it.

Yeah the one bad thing about the gameplay, other than the stuff resulting from lack of polish, is the enemies don't do too much. But the challenge is really in getting your score high, at least on Medium.

Do not play on easy, medium is already quite easy, I only died twice so far and I pretty much never use items and I forgot I could heal for the first half of the game.

I normally like that but she doesn't really do much for me. I seem to be in the minority though (at least, among those who enjoy the game)

60fps huh? I'm actually a bit impressed with the Video's I've been watching...

Anyone know what the "XMB" icon looks like for this?

Welp, I finally broke and decided to get this so marched on into Best Buy ready for my 20% discount plus my $25 worth of vouchers from being a member of GCU.

No sign of it on shelf. Asked the first Best Buy employee I saw, a guy with stinky breath and an Amish beard, to check the back. I had to do this for Resident Evil: Revelations 2, my Best Buy seems to have a habit of not putting games out unless they're big ones. He comes back a minute later and tells me their shipment hasn't arrived yet, check back in a couple days.

Guess I'm buying it on BestBuy.com and having it mailed to me.

Enjoying what I've played so far, and did not expect the physical box to be so big. Thought it only came with the game so the art book and cd is a nice bonus.
One question though, anyway to get back to main menu from in game at the stage select?

Have you played the earlier games? I think they are diriving her on what people have grown up with the change of tone from her to Aya where that's really where her silliness comes out. I think she needs better writing to really push across what she is about.

You need to hear Kagura in Japanese, but she still sounds hilarious in English. Saki has a ton of personality too, while Aya and Saaya are more reserved, and their VA nails the tone.

The English VA is solid, but there are some awkward comic panel cutscenes with dialogue that slowly writes itself on screen, and the actors try to match their voices to its pace. Those will be the parts that stick with people and make them think the English VA sucks, but as an actor, there's only so much you can do. If I were voice directing, I'd have had them ignore the pace of the text, but I understand the choice to replicate the style of the Japanese VA. Kagura's English VA is the best at overcoming this adversity, and all the actors do what they can for some good delivery where possible.

But during the other cutscenes and during gameplay, everyone sounds great. I'm going to really enjoy playing the game in both languages, but as I said, I'm sticking with the English for my first run. I started playing in Japanese, and wished I could understand the little bits of combat dialogue (taunts, etc) that obviously aren't subbed, and the characters' reactions to their grades at the end of each Bayonetta-style verse. Playing in Japanese will be better when I'm familiar with the English.

So far, I am enjoying this more than I initially thought.
The story is stupid, but the combat is better than I expected.

It's like the opposite of Senran Kagura. I like the story in SK, but the combat is shallow.
Here the story is stupid, but the combat interesting.

Solid FPS too. Been seeing more 60 FPS retail games out of japanese studios than western ones on PS4, it's kinda funny.

Circle doesn't send you back? Or do you mean the "choose a nation" thingy? Just pick an area and "give up" and you'll go back to the chapter you started I think.

You died?

Anyway, I'm already on my hard playthrough. I want to unlock those weapons to see what's what.

Yea, I'm at the part where you choose from the 5 locations, give up worked when I went into the stage to go back to the main menu.

I keep going back and forth on whether I should pick this up or not. I don't really need a new game to play, but it looks interesting. I did find one at a local GameStop, so it would be physical. Is there any chance of this becoming hard to find? Should I jump on it now?

As someone who plays through games once, is this worth it, or is it more for people who are into collecting and multiple playthroughs? I don't mind the game being on the shorter side, as long as it's a fun experience.

I'm so indecisive sometimes :/

I died right after they gave you Kagura's transformed state. Forgot about the whole "you constantly lose health" bit and just died from gradual bleeding out lol.

Am I the only one that had a hard time with
Misha Xtatic
? Anything that landed ate at least 1/3 of my health.

I did beat it eventually but the difficulty felt way off compared to the previous bosses.

Kagura and Saya are half vampires they can cheat that system. Also when you get the ring and the proper weapon even berzerk mode means nothing if you have enough thing to beat on. Also use blood recovery, the half vampire princesses are no joke when you find out their broken shit.

So, what outside of skills are absolute must buys? Best rings? Also, are the weapons actually better or are they just different skins for visual purposes?

I'll be honest, I skipped all the story bits so I don't know who that is. I beat every boss the same way. Constant life management, stylish combos, always call all the girls out when I can, transform each on purpose, and bring out the girl who can parry when I got a boss that can attack 360 degrees. No items or rings required.

Welp, guess I'm not getting the game. As I mentioned earlier my Best Buy doesn't have it in stock in store and also isn't available for in-store pickup. My only choice is BestBuy.com but... I can either pay $18 shipping to get it in a few days or I have to wait till August 3rd. If I end up having to wait 2-3 weeks after a game release, I might as well keep waiting.

Shit Best Buy, I know it is a niche game but c'mon.

(For those wondering why I don't try Gamestop or Amazon or what have you; I get 20% off at Best Buy on new video games)

Anyone else having problems getting it?

Get all skills or the latter difficulties are gonna wreck you. Cool combos are a must when you do the later missions. As for rings, there are 2 that give infinite berzerk meter, there are ones that make combos easier and those that have health recovery. I rock combo, vampirism and sometimes the berzerk meter. Although Kagura and Saya can build that meter pretty quickly when you have the combos down. Also utitlize the burst mechanic where you hold down the transformation, the flash will liquify most shit around you. You can also cancel into it.

They have free shipping on orders $35 and up, basically any new game is shipped free, and definitely onechanbara would be. Unless you mean free shipping is too slow, but I usually get it in a few days. Not prime, but you can't expect stuff to be in stores. I never buy in store anymore

isn't the transformation R3 + L3? how can I hold that down :x
This game has almost too much shit packed in.

Assist meters.
Climax attacks.
AND transformations.
That's THREE meters! on top of the combo system that already requires timing.

I might need to hit practice mode cause I don't think I have all of the systems down yet tbh. Some of the stuff is pretty straight forward but unsure about a lot of stuff still.

I just added it to my cart on Best Buy's site and shipping options are Monday (Expedited) for Free or Friday (Express) for $9.49. Located in NY, US. Shipping prices might be different due to Elite Plus membership.

Screw it, went ahead and bought it off Bestbuy.com. I can only hope it gets here before Aug. 3rd. XD

$16.38 after my Best Buy discounts. The price definitely helps with knowing that the game isn't going to be a masterpiece. XD

So this is a dumb question but..... how do you unlock the gallery? I've completed a bunch of the "Quests" and unlocked garbage in the gallery apparently but its still greyed out.

For me they're not MUCH slower than Amazon 2 day, one or two days usually, in the middle of the US. IT only hurts when Amazon offers release day shipping and Best Buy doesn't because then it's like a week difference

I never made that connection. I roll my eyes at Dante being so corny and I don't like Kagura here, so that validates it, ha ha! It doesn't diminish my enjoyment of their respective games or anything, but I definitely prefer Aya and Saki.

As for my impressions of this game, I like it because of solid combat, fun enemy designs, and a lighthearted grindhouse atmosphere. Sure, the environments look like an old PS2 game, but it's not relevant when you're killing dudes nonstop and things are moving briskly.
