Mechwarrior 2, the greatest mech sim ever, was released 20 years ago today

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
Tonally, thematically, and mechanically completely on point. I think its legacy is helped by that distinct post-Cold War ominous dread that hit a lot of media late 80s early 90s, like The Terminator.

May I ask why? I haven't followed the Mech series at all really since MechAssault came out.

They really don't listen to the community and there's a lot of nickel and diming involved. I haven't played it for a long time, but the company and business practices are a HUGE turn off.

Woah, I remember playing the Mechwarrior games on my family's old Gateway when I was little.

Apart from what I think was Tribes at the time, it was one of my favorite games.

I wish this game could make a comeback someday.

A magical time in PC gaming. This game was THE reason to own a Sidewinder joystick. I did finally toss that thing about 5 years ago. When it first came out, it totally gave me Battlezone vibes. That slow turn and saying to yourself "Hurry, turn!" as you either line up someone or get lined up.

I was a big Battletech fan and I used to play the original Mechwarrior back in the day. When I heard about Mechwarrior 2, I basically built a new PC just to play it. And it was great! Not only did it bring the Battletech universe to life, but it had 'Mech action exactly as you'd envision it. On top of that, the music was really groundbreaking for the time and it probably would stand up even today. All in all, I was already a PC gamer by then but Mechwarrior 2 went a long way in cementing that platform for me.

Loved the Ghost Bear Legacy. Man expansions used to be so much better back in the day.
I mostly liked Ghost Bear's Legacy but that one water mission was complete ass.

Why MS hasn't used the license for a 360 or XB1 game is baffling. Would love a modern version
Microsoft doesn't value any of their FASA IP very highly. They're all a bit too gribbly for mass appeal so they don't fit with the company's visions for gaming.

One of my all time favorites. The follow up (Mercenaries) was also incredible.

Still waiting on Pirahna games to do the incredibly obvious move of taking their awesome assets from MWO and making a single player game.

Loved the idea of this game and played the hell out of the old Infocom game and the Strike-like Genesis/SNES game, but I have a dirty confession to make. I never got past the first mission because I couldn't figure out how to end it. On both the PC and PS1 versions. Now, I was 20 years younger, but I'm old enough that I should've been able to figure it out.

Forgot about that, you are correct. /shudder

And agreed about MSFT, why did they even buy it if they sent it's rich universe to die. Such a disservice.

Mechwarrior 2: Mercenaries is still one of my favorite games of all time. The last mission where its you and two wingmen versus an entire nation of heavy mechs is unreal and just the perfect level of difficulty.

The Microsoft that bought up FASA is very different entity from the one that exists today, especially when it comes to gaming. Back then, Microsoft's gaming department was firmly invested in PC gaming with the Age of Empires games, Flight Simulator, Crimson Skies and Mechwarrior/Mechcommander. They originally saw PC gaming as a field that was related to their main businesses, but one that they didn't have much presence in, so they invested in it hoping to get at the front of the industry. After Microsoft released Xbox, their priority changed to looking for hits, and their old franchises simply aren't well suited for that. There's no malice involved, but that doesn't help us any.

I thought Zone of the Enders 2 was the best mech game ever, oh wait, I didn't read the sim part on your title, you are right I agree with you.

This was game of the year for quite a few people back then. Personally Mercenaries was godlike.

The fanbase exists for these type of games but the modern offerings haven't been as fulfilling.

You are correct. Didn't Wizkids (the old FASA founder) purchase licensing back for gaming?

Shame Microsoft Games is full of suits and no yosp or Iwata

They managed to push out two nice games before Fries and Allard ruined PC gaming

"Kill the meat, save the metal...". Mercenaries was the first game where I was all in. I read the manuals, faqs, anything I could find. So much fun.

God I played the shit out of that game on my crap computer of the time. I'd love to see this or even MechAssault remastered on PC/Console

Loved the game... made me a mechwarrior fan. Haven't played MechWarrior Online though... don't have a PC to do it.

I would love Microsoft to resurrect MechAssault on Xbox One.

Shutd... *boom*

Fuck your shutdown, computer, I ain't no Jenner's lunch. Gonna LRM-20 that mofo from 5 meters away. ALL SYSTEMS NOMINAL, BITCH.

If GOG and/or Steam got all the classic MechWarrior games, and had them running nicely on modern hardware, day one for the entire series. I still listen to the soundtrack.

Still have my original CD and run it sometimes. The game is just plain fun, to say nothing of the soundtrack (which is among the best ever composed).

Limping back to your dustoff point in a shot-up Stormcrow while 5 Summoner IICs chase you down is as tense today as it was back then. It's great to see so many people still love the game!

Fuck that water level in GBL.

If anyone is I terested, some awesome dudes actually are running a modded version of MW4(?) in some INSANE simulation pods. They were at Dragoncon last year and man this was the most amazing experience.

One of my favorite games of all time. I think that, besides the clumsy loadout/criticals system, it's basically perfect. I love the the way the software renderer looks with sparse texture mapping and basic shaded polys, which it totally ruined by 3d acceleration. I love the way movement and targeting works and feels, which i think hasn't been matched by any other game in the series. I love the aesthetic touches, the startup sequence, the music, everything. i don't think a remake or remaster could do the game any favors, honestly. The DOS versions of MW2 and Mercs is all I could ever need.

Fuck ghost bear though. Shit is broke.

I still have old Pentium edition from bundle and it's considered one of the best versions? Great news.

Still would like Gog offer MW2 trilogy and MW4 . Maybe one day

This was one of the first games I ever bought myself, and I loved it. What's the best version of it to play now (DOS, Windows, Titanium)? I lost my copy ages ago, would love to pick it up again and try it out.

Loved it back as a kid, even if I sucked at it and knew nothing really of tactics. I usually just picked the biggest mech and fired all I had at the enemy.

DOS, especially Mercs. The windows/titanium ports of Mercs are buggy as hell. The software rendering in the DOS games look nicer in my opinion, and they're really easy to run in DOSbox.

It's impressive to go back to the game, dated as it is technically, to see how much atmosphere remains. The low poly, desolate landscapes, and the slow, heavy movement of the mechs, along with the ambient music, really create a unique vibe I haven't seen in any other game.

It definitely captures the feel of driving a huge walking vehicle better than nearly any modern mech in a game.

Sweet, thanks! Used copies are wicked cheap on eBay and Amazon, so I'll probably jump on that this weekend. Never got to play online, but mech2.org seems to still have a pretty active community.
