Rumor: Half Life 3 still not in full development

Sounds about right, although the reasoning for delaying it seems like speculation at best.

It doesn't make sense to launch Half Life 3 except as a platform exclusive. You could make the case for SteamOS + VR, but it doesn't seem like those are ready yet.

They are the ones with the Dark Souls 3 leak, Tomb Raider PS4/PC confirmation a month early, and revealed the Kinectless XB1 a year before MSFT announced it. We don't know Silent Hills isn't coming to the XB1 it just seems unlikely.

Personally I believe them based on their successful track record.

Oh I know Dark Souls 3 but didn't know about others sorry then

What's the deal with that space game? It was rumored pretty heavily with a name about 3 years ago (Stars of something, wasn't it), and I seem to remember a resurgence a few months ago. I assume that's where their development efforts are going?

I'd rather they not make it at this point. Its only value is in the fact that it hasn't been released yet. Like Duke Nukem Forever before it went to shit.

Can you imagine the backlash when The Last Guardian ends up being an 8/10 game instead of the earth-shattering masterpiece it was hyped up to be? Half Life 3 has to completely reinvent gaming based on the hype around it.

I am starting to accept the fact that I'm gonna die without knowing how this ends.

God dammit, Valve. Not like this.

We'll never know what the Borealis did, either. Aw :(

6. game culture has changed since 2004 ("sadly, most people are shitheads" - anonymous source at valve)

I wonder what the reasoning behind this is. Not joking, genuinely curious. It seems a strange attitude to have toward your user base (or gaming consumers in general), even if they're not incorrect about some people being shitheads.

It's been called Stars of Blood and Stars of Barathrum. We only found out about it because the project was canceled and someone who worked on it was then allowed to show the concept art he did in his portfolio. There hasn't been any new activity that I'm aware of.

The only way they can achieve that is with VR. Make it the first big budget AAA VR exclusive title aimed at the mid to high end market. Some people will be pissed but it'll turn heads.

Yeah, I don't even know how to interpret the comment. What has changed that makes
"most people" who play games "shit heads"?

Like, I don't even know what that means.

They are going to wait to see how the VR launch goes then wait to see if HL3 can even happen in VR without major compromises. If those go well they will make something like DOTA or a new IP. Then finally HL3 in 2020 starts development. Releases 2024. Your welcome.

Stuff like the advent of social media means that enormous internet backlash is way more magnified on all fronts and far more public instead of largely being regulated to message boards or anonymous image boards in the early/mid 2000's you could choose to ignore (not saying that's the right response mind you). That's my guess anyhow.

But he did!

simpsons ended over a decade ago, no clue what this is

Even for those who never once played Half-Life, surely Valve has to realize the game will crush in sales simply on the mystique and anticipation alone right?

Games like Aliens: Colonial Marines, Duke Nukem, etc. that were in development hell had hype, but Half-Life 3 has become a product desired (and a joke used) worldwide, this thing will absolutely crush it if/when it drops.

They'd be stupid to not finish it and finally get it over with. Soon, people will let the joke and hype dry up forever and whenever it finally arrives, it'll a relic like Duke was.

Valve don't do exclusives. It's pretty much against their philosophy at this point. The only time a game is "exclusive" is due to an organic reason such as the game not being possible else where due to services / features / peripherals etc

I want this game to come out just so we can hear about its development. Between Episode 3 and full on HL3, I refuse to believe it hasn't been in development since before Episode 2 released even. Just getting rebooted over and over.

Wouldn't this earn them just as much bad will when people here they stopped developing their most popular title in favor of more F2P games and shitty Steam releases? I mean look at Konami, or hell, look at Capcom and Square a few years back. Companies that did the same thing and financially faltered as a result.

Honestly at this point, I would rather Valve put out "The Making of Half-Life 3" instead of the actual game.

Hahahaha

In what universe is half life anywhere near their most popular title?

Isn't half the point of being a private company that they can do these vanity projects without having to worry about shareholder backlash?

Half Life as a game and as a business decision is dead to valve. The few people that would really be wanting to make it have moved on, or in the case of Mark Laidlaw created fan fiction basically. (Breengrub)

It should have been obvious after Portal 2 came out they they have no care in the world of having those universes connect. I mean the writing is so outlandish that Id have a hard time taking the crossover seriously. And don't give me the "years later" thing. It's plainly clear that half life was not a thought in their mind while making Portal 2.

At this point I just wish they hadn't ended Episode 2 with a cliffhanger.

Man, whatever. I'm not sure how much I would care about current-Valve making HL3, honestly.

Everything in this rumour is something anyone here on GAF could've come up with. I'm sticking with what I said before: Half Life 3 will launch within 6 months of the Vive.
