iOS Gaming July 2015 | Apple bans the revolution

Think I'm going to get Operation Dracula, even though I really, really need to cut back on spending.

Probably will pass on even downloading AB2. A comment on TA resonated with me that the biggest part of Angry Birds was always trying to get better scores/stars through trial and error. Having a heart/timer based system sucks the fun right out of that. And like that same commenter mentioned, I still have tons of AB games I never even finished if I really want to play that kind of game.

Also want to keep an eye on Warhammer: Arcane Magic. Want to get through Deathwatch first (and likely play again on Veteran to watch me suck even more ;) ).

I suppose it was too much to hope that Angry Birds 2 wouldnt be filled with freemium nonsense but they really went all out

last day for the SNK sale

any suggestions for an easy to control fighter to pick up?

Only KOF-i 2012 is actually easy to control (and even then, not THAT easy) because it was made specifically to mobile. The rest is fairly playable but not great. Good luck trying to pull advanced moves.

thanks, i tried the free version and felt the controls were actually not bad. having a dedicated "special" button is a smart feature.

do you know the difference between the paid version and the free version?

Operation Dracula is awesome (and harder than hell). Arguably the best shmup in a while, standing with the Cave games, Danmaku Unlimited 2 and Sine Mora as my favorites on iOS (with .Decluster pretty far up there too).

Ah, those damn timers

That's the same thing that ruined Trials for me. I thought the gameplay and visuals were solid, but the excessive timers and endless grinding overshadows any positives that game had
Ah, Trials...

I've never played a better game on mobile that was as ruined by grinding and IAP junk like Trials Frontiers. It looks and plays so well, but the ridiculous amount of collecting (that relies on a wheel of fortune chance spinning wheel, so you don't even always get what you need) you need to do to continue with objectives and upgrade your bike along with the limited Fuel mechanic is just a nightmare.

I played that game a LOT and even spent money on it (regrettably, I didn't expect the game to hit as big of a wall as it eventually becomes) and it's just insane how bad it gets. Right when the levels start getting decent challenging, the time requirements to progress become astronomical. At least you could ignore the fuel mechanic if you changed your iPad's clock forward a few hours every time you ran out, you could even speed up bike upgrades that way until they made it so you needed to be connected to their server to upgrade the bike.

It's crazy that Bike Baron is still the best "Trials" game on IOS and that came out in 2011. Blows Frontiers out the window IMO

Draw Rider Plus is a solid runner
-up. Those two are my favorite bike games on mobile

The Trial Extreme games are pretty close to Trials, but most of those have a freemium element to them (although not nearly as bad as Frontiers). Urban Trial Freestyle could have been great if they had spent a more time polishing it and tweaked the controls a bit.

I love Bike Baron, but it's a little more arcadey and has a different feel to me than Trials.

Ashame Redlynx couldn't have released a proper premium Trials game.

Yeah this is disappointing. Will mean I give up on it soon. I've ran out of lives and I have to either wait for a refill or spend gems. Yawn. Can't blame them I guess but the ship has sailed with Angry Birds. The "sequel" is very similar outside of a new paint job. But being IAP heavy kills it for me. It's nice to pick up and play again after a while away but it not doing much if anything different plus not being able to play it with infinite lives hurts that "have another go" factor.

Also with the levels having up to 3 (so far at least) stages, doing badly on one means having to restart the the others, which again isn't fun. I think the levels also seem a little randomly generated so they aren't quite the same next time.

Hey Pitta, since many of us low lifes here don't have access to posting where the devs can see it, has anyone even mentioned or asked for the ability / skill / equipment slot unlocks to be a little more reasonable in cost in Deathwatch? Sure would be nice to try a few - - after all, that's a big part of each class, but I just can't see saving for them instead of upgrading your stats.

I just had my whole team wiped out and all saved XP gone, which thought me a valuable lesson to spend when you can. Sure you can grind earlier missions, but still seems silly to have such high XP values for abilities.

I wish they had had separate skill points or something for those vs your regular attributes.

.. And yeah, reiterating that Operation Dracula is a must buy if you are a shmup fan.

You can email devs or Tweet to them. 99% of the time, that's my preferred way to get in touch and ask questions. Much more direct than a forum and more likely to get a response

True. I have used Twitter quite a bit for that purpose. Just know the devs appear to be active over on TA. And sometimes if it stirs a discussion, then it can have a little more impact than just one person on Twitter. Or maybe even lead to a discussion that may help understand why it was designed that way.

I know there are legends around but I'm not part of Rodeo and besides mails during the beta I talk with them mostly via Twitter.
Actually they are really nice people, and when I sent mails asking/complaint/etc...they always gave me reasonable answers.
They are pretty busy these days with the patch and multiplayer, but they are really active in TA on right now.
I know they have requested an account on NeoGAF too, they want to be active here too (actually they asked it before the TA account) but they are still waiting for approval.

I will ask them if you wish so (not that me asking would be different from you asking) but I suggest to ask them over TA, hoping the question won't be buried by the tons of discussions there right now.
Actually, I do not think the requirements are excessive and I can testify you do not have to grind in the game.

Let me explain (but Rodeo coukd provide much more infos), based on my experience.

The game is set up in this way:
A first play through at normal...that generally grants you some veterans and some tier 2-3 items.
Very few skills.
A second one at veteran...IMHO the 'real' game...you will level up much faster and get much better loot (champions and tier 3 and 4 items)....you will now unlock many skills and face aliens with a lot of new skills too.
I have yet to hit heroic, but it's when you have fully unlocked almost everything I'm told.

The fact there is so much loot and tier 4 marines doesn't mean you have to get them to complete the game (on the contrary a fresh tier 4 is much weaker than a leveled up normal marine).
As a matter of fact I competed normal with just tier 1 and veterans marines.
I think 3-4 skills in the total squad and some tier 2-3 items.

Now I'm in the middle of the veteran campaign with all champions and one Sanguinary Guard, with many tier 3-4 weapons and items and many fully developed skill-wise.
Nobody has th second item slot unlocked (but I'm about to unlock one).

I never grinded any level, I replayed twice if I recall well one level because I missed so,e chatter and I was 40XP short of an 8K skill.

That's my experience...just play the game....trying to 'crack' the levels with what you have at disposal is IMHO the most fun to play the game and where Rodeo games really shine.
Actually I read many on TA that have still to complete the game on normal and grind like madmen or pay a fortune and already have unlocked almost everything.
They will breeze through the game on normal...but hey it's their fun.

Thanks. Figured you probably were aware of my lack of ability to even be on TA, but won't get into that again.

I guess it just feels weird to me that you have these abilities /traits that are special to each class, but I'm finding that it seems wiser to upgrade your accuracy and health at lower costs than unlocking those abilities. Saving up for them can be a dangerous way to go (at least for me, just reeling from a big loss of XP). Guess I'm used to many RPGs (and I know this isn't a normal RPG) where those kind of skills unlock automatically through leveling up and/or separate skill points. So having to choose upgrading stats vs unlocking skills and such feels a bit odd. And, as I mentioned, the costs associated with some of them are really high.

I mentioned the medic in an earlier post. 8000 XP to unlock what I would think the main benefit of being a medic is? That's pretty harsh since it could possibly take eight entire missions to gather that with high risk that you'll die and lose it all.

Just my opinion.

I love the game and guess I'll probably just have to play it as if everyone was the same class and concentrate on stats over skills.

Just a strange design choice to me. But that's just IMO.

There is a light version of Blockwick 2 to try, Basics... Lets see how it goes... been interested in it for a while....

This game is fantastic. It is also fantastic on iOS. Buy it. And buy Operation Dracula. Be warned, it is extremely difficult-even on easy. But it is an absolutely fantastic shmup.

iOS9 doesnt let me download anything now... sigh... anyways, back to the original plan... buy Race the Sun when I arrive home since I already addicted to the Steam version...

As for Operation Dracula, I am not really into bullet hell games, the one I liked was Danmaku Unlimited 2 and waiting for the soon the be released third installment in the series. But I will keep an eye on it.

Edit 4 or 5 cant remember xD: Still cant download both Blockwick 2 and Race the Sun. Will keep tying :/

Sorry I wasn't aware you could have TA problems.
(I saw you asked on Twitter but I doubt the medium limit can provide an answer).

To get in topic (maybe we can move all this in the Deathwatch topic? I too would prefer to contain all iOS games infos/opinions here but I guess it could be annoying for others, and I know I'm not concise): I see now where the 'doubts' come from.
Deathwatch is NOT an RPG...even if it may seem one.
You won't unlock all the skills...probably you will trash and sell your half developed marines for the higher tier one (who will be weaker being fresh).
Progression is quite different form a RPG.
And you can even forget about unlocks and fully develop your initial squad (many do this, instead of using the higher tier marines).
If I may...don't waste XP on health....just focus on accuracy (you will eventually unlock marines that have a much higher starting health) and the skills you think could be useful and the first item slot (for grenades or stimpacks).
Every time you level up the cost goes up exponentially...so if you level up health...accuracy or crit (which is important later on) costs MUCH more.
I generally level up just accuracy at least till 15 level.
You probably won't fully develop a marine till later in the game, so do not be obsessed with it.
Try to crack the missions with what you have at your disposal.
At first, if you are not sure of what your facing, spend XP when you can...believe me it's not worthy saving for 8K skills and be killed or 7.9K (been there, done that).
Apothecary is overrated IMHO....I'm playing without him in my veteran play through...,but that just my style and I change it according to what I unlock.
In my first (beta) play through I used all tactical marines with mid ranged meltas...in my actual one I'm using mostly up close and personal assault marines.
Many other marines can heal or equip healing kit.

Just my two cents.

Don't move the topic to the deathwatch page! Even if I'm not so deeply into the subject I still like reading your guys opinions and views. Keep this topic healthy with lots of long and deep impressions, don't worry! If I get tired of reading I just skip down to the next post. ;)

I actually do the very same thing even for games I'm not interested at all but several times already thanks to NeoGAF I approached and enjoyed genres I would have never touched.
I just said that because in the past some people (legitimately) complained (very kindly).

Thanks again. For the most part, I am working with my initial squad. It sometimes feels wasteful bringing in a Tier II or even Tier III marine and watch him get his ass handed to him because despite his "tier" he still can be far weaker than your other leveled up Tier I marines.

And after seeing that 8000 XP heal unlock, I've pretty much dropped my Apothecary as well. I do have another marine with a medkit.

Most of my main go to marines are currently level 8-9. I've probably spent the most XP on accuracy (per one of your earlier posts), but have done some HP upgrades as well. Guess I'll concentrate mostly on accuracy again for a while. Honestly, some of the abilities don't even sound that powerful so it makes the cost seem even more questionable. And the ones that do sound decent are out of reach without taking huge risks.

I suppose that risk is one of the game's strategic aspects. But I'll take your points in mind as I'm wanting to play even a little more cautiously after my last defeat.

---

And also, I like keeping things in this thread. It's kind of funny, but when I first came to GAF that was probably my biggest complaint -- not having separate threads for every game. Now that I've been here a while, I actually prefer the free flowing conversation in the iOS thread and rarely go to the OT if one exists.

Continuing the trend of excellent PC ports on IOS, Race The Sun plays perfectly on mobile

I have to say, between games that I own on both PC and IOS, I tend to play more of the games on mobile. I'm farther along in Transistor, DoorKickers, Race The Sun, etc. on iPad than I ever was on Steam

Anyone else?

I sold my PS4 a few days ago without regrets. My iPhone serves me as my perfect platform for gaming. iOS is the best because of its diversity: You can get both worlds: full fledged games of the like of Transistor or Oceanhorn and arcade time wasters like endless runners and puzzlers. Both can coexist on the platform perfectly, suiting many tastes. And the portability helps a lot too.

I enjoy mobile a lot, but my PC is easily my most played platform. I guess I just enjoy mettier experiences and I love me some eye candy.

I'm playing a lot of PSP on my iPad though!

Thanks mostly to my son, I have both an Xbox One and a PS4 as well as, more recently, a PC that can actually play stuff (my old one was a POS).

But just because we have the consoles, doesn't mean I play them as much as I want. That said even with all of that stuff, I can't afford to just buy what I want. Between my son and I, we only have a handful of retail games on PS4/Xbox One as well as the PS+ and GwG freebies. And I still can't get into PC gaming for some reason.

As far as ports go, though, with my limited time and money, I only double dip if it's something I really, really love and it isn't a huge deal to double dip.

Hence, the only recent game that I have on both a console (Xbox One) and mobile is Geometry Wars 3. I have Race the Sun on PS4 and I dig it, but not enough to make me want to double dip. Maybe some day. Just not something I'm jumping up and down about.

I also own some others on mobile and console like Bastion. I have Transistor on PS4 and, again, it's a great game, but not something I want to buy twice.

Really comes down to how much I want something on the go. I love Geometry Wars so that was a must buy. Race the Sun, I can actually see being really good on mobile being a runner, but not essential.

I have to be more and more picky since I tend to get too many games only available on iOS. And I do buy some indie games occasionally on Xbone, PS4 or PC.

iOS still takes up at least 2/3 of my gaming due to time restrictions alone. The other 1/3 split mostly between the consoles (although I generally prefer my Xbox One to the PS4, don't ask me why).

Probably sound like a spoiled brat having access to all those platforms, but if it weren't for having a teenage son, I wouldn't be in the position I am. I can't get every game I want and spend too much already, mostly on iOS, to have an enormous backlog.

Edit: LOL. I actually posted this on my PC and now, looking at it on my Mini, holy crap was that a long post! Sorry!

Don't follow the thread very closely but what are the opinions on Puzzle Mayor? It peaked my interest as a sort of Threes/Triple Town sort of thing. But I may be totally off on that assumption. Might wait to play it when it comes to
Android
, as it seems suited more for phones than my iPad.

edit: Ah, OT said early July but it doesn't seem to be out yet.

Anyone know what is going on with the long promised updates for both Ridiculous Fishing and Super Crate Box? Are they submitting it from an Amiga 500?

Also checked out Blockwick Basics (the completely free version) and is really good and the smoothness of moving the pieces is unprecedented to me, so easy. I wonder what special bricks lies ahead in the full version but it wont be long before I know since I am already buying it as I write this post. So in the end I got Blockwick 2 and Race the Sun, awesome week. Impressions soon.

Regarding Angry Birds 2's energy mechanic from Pocket Gamer.biz:

“The users liked this implementation in soft launch,” he (Rovio dev) said, referring to the Angry Birds: Under Pigstruction game released in Canada.

Seriously? Who were these people? What hosers.

I find it hard to believe anyone really "liked" this. I downloaded AB2 out of curiosity. And it's actually pretty good...save the heart system. Urggh.

Those people aren't really gamers... at most, casuals who play one level every day at most (pretty much 90% of people are like this. Girls form a huge percentage), so they have 5 retries to beat a level. And then wait hours to play it again. Casual style. They dont care nor know about whats really going on.

Then there are gamers, who love to play games, dont like timers... and know their gaming.

And last, hardcore gamers. Us. People who breathe games. People who has Twitter gaming dedicated accounts, talk about games on forums, websites, who search the internet daily for new games. We hate timers.

And Rovio preys on those casuals.

Well, what's the measure of users "liking" the energy mechanic - actual praise for it, or whether its inclusion raised user retention? I'm going to guess this feedback was all in the numbers.
