Any recommendations for a fun space adventure like Outlaw star? I've watched quite a bit of anime but need something with a bit of style, comedy and action.

I've only watched a couple of shows these past couple of years so not sure of whats out there in the sci fi genre.

How furries are made.

Actually a good emotional episode for Ataru. Maybe the first time he's actually lamented on what a jerk he is. Not that I expect him to not be a selfish jerk anymore though so whatevs.

Also Cosmic Cycler.

Animator Expo #27: Bubu & Bubulina

I really liked this one, it didn't feel like I was watching some sort of trailer or preview, it was just a neat little short that wrapped up pretty nicely.

I'd recommend everyone to watch it, nine minutes full of dynamic animation, fun and wacky characters plus a cool soundtrack to boot.

This is what Animator Expo is supposed to be, awesome

I haven't watched it myself but Space Dandy might be worth checking out.

This was a really nice return to form. One thing about this short is that it's immediately apparent that the director has a lot of experience doing short films. Rather than trying to squeeze an overambitious concept into a short time span, or using the short as a pilot film, he just tells a simple story well structured and designed for a short piece. The characters are charming and make very good use of expressions rather than dialogue to define their characteristics, and there's a lot of fun and kinetic mischievous action on display. I really like Takashi Nakamura's work (everyone should watch Fantastic Children!) and I'm glad he pulled off another solid piece here. Getting Toshiyuki Inoue to animate a chunk of it no doubt added to the quality significantly. :)

I'm really not feeling the last three episodes of School Live compared to the first three. My problem is a mix of doing a couple of not interesting flashbacks with a predictable outcome, a couple of anime tropes (Miki's fanservice is really, really out of place) and most importantly introducing a fear that it doesn't ever plan to change the status quo to something more interesting.

There was also absolutely no reason to
confirm Mika-nee's non existence like this. As obvious as it was the ambiguity and watching the rest of the characters keeping up the play without a confirmation that it was one made it a lot more interesting.

I'm glad they've moved on past the Megu-nee stuff. In fact it feels like it's taken too long to get to this point and there's only so much they could have played it up.

Well, it's not like anyone told Yuki the truth so we are gonna keep playing with the Megu-nee stuff only now it's gonna be even more boring. It feels like we will be getting the worst of both worlds now.

My understanding is that the manga covers a lot more than just Yuki so I think this works fine as a way of shifting focus from her. Obviously we have to see how future episodes handle it but I think this plot point has long been played out so it's time for something new.

Some production figures. I always knew it was low, but 150k per episode is lower than i really expected. And even then most don't break even. And of course just like Hollywood a small subset of successful shows fund the unsuccessful ones.

It does make me wonder just what kind of amounts overseas licensing generates. I've always wondered about that, especially given the amount of content Funimation and Crunchyroll stream for next to nothing.

My guess it depends on the show. Certain genres are probably more expensive such as action and mecha because they require many more cuts per episode.

Mecha can be cheap. You just need to animate intro poses, one ground battle, one space battle, and then trace over them over and over again! Yeah!!!

We know what ADV were paying for shows circa 2006, but prices have been in flux since then quite significantly thanks to the collapse of US physical retails for this stuff and half the anime labels disappearing and the like. Current industry scuttlebutt is that we are very much back in a licensing bubble, though, so licensing expenditure is climbing pretty rapidly at the moment.

So yeah, I make this short.

If you can go through the first 3 episodes, it becomes a highly enjoyable show.
Just prepare for a ton of inconsistencies and plot holes.

I kinda feel like this show should have ended after episode 7 since things kinda wrap up at that point.

the ending is sequel bait-y but not so much so that it's annoying.
dancing near a grave seems... inappropriate as well...

there's also a not so slight pedo-vibe in some scenes, specifically the ones involving the student council prez made me feel super uncomfortable.

overall, I enjoyed it (episode 2 be damned) but it's definitely not for everyone.

Yea I'm sure Seed Destiny wasn't exactly breaking the bank.

I recall a chart of show budgets going around at one point way back. SEED Destiny is actually one of the most expensive TV anime ever produced. When you're making a sequel to a super successful series, expect to break the bank to sign new contracts for the major players, even if the animators don't get a dime more. :)

Where's that Shirobako chart with the VA salaries?

I feel like one of the biggest strengths of the short format is that it gives animators much more freedom to explore mediums and styles that might be outside their comfort zone. It's not often you see actual paint (aside from watercolors) in an animation, and the backgrounds in this short really could have worked as their own art pieces. But even better I think was how well the backgrounds mixed with the foreground animation, which I want to say was probably accomplished by the less constrained penwork around the solid objects both in the backgrounds and foregrounds. Perhaps the writing wasn't particularly compelling, but the art itself was striking enough that it held my interest throughout, and really, the plot was more of a backseat to what ended up being a successful experiment in engaging animation with tools that may veer away from the standard.

This is kind of how I felt watching The Diary of Ochibi, although that was more a creative use of CGI.

That's why stuff like Genius Party was so great. I was a huge fan of the Animatrix format too, but Warner sadly got worse and worse with how they managed such stuff. Halo Legends was not bad, but much less ambitious, while Gotham Knight turned out to be a total bummer. Madhouse even demanded their names to be taken off it. We need more good anthology projects in animation! :(

Not really CGI though. It was actual stop motion animation. They did an Indiegogo campaign for it originally: https://www.indiegogo.com/projects/animated-short-film-ochibi

The range and variety of animation types showcased in Animator Expo is the coolest thing about it. :)

Maturity, bitches.
For those worried about YrYr S3 I should note that the team behind it saw my review for the OVA and after bowing and apologising profusely 600 times they ensured me that the upcoming series would be an improvement.

They also requested I stop making things up.

Was the OVA a substantial dip in quality? I know it was done by a different team, but I imagined it was still decent.

Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya

YESSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS, IT’S SOOOOO GOOOOOOOD ~~~~ Not even yuri, not even mana sharing and it ended up being the best Fate related material in existence. Seriously, super seriously serious, mahou shoujo like this is amazing, so freaking wonderful, so absolutely fantastic, so incredibly awesome. I don’t care what you like, what you dislike, I don’t care what you think about mahou shoujo’s, watch this anime, do it for your anime filled heart, do it for your soul, do it to experience ultimate badass awesomeness that is escalated a thousand fold and doesn’t stop, you won’t regret it, it’s impossible to regret; JUST DO IT!

Following 4 girls, Illya, Miyu, Rin and Luvia, we witness some of the most amazing things ever. Don’t worry about the lewd, aside from well-drawn lines nothing bad happens (I’m lying, there are fan-servicy aspects involved, it’s just not a lot….). Illya is the star of the show and holy crap does she deliver. The cutest girl, the most adorable eyes/eye color, insanely cute seiyuu, her personality, it’s freaking perfect, 100000% perfect, Illya is amazing, <3 <3 <3 <3 <3. Miyu is amazing too, super cute and extra determined, the way Miyu and Illya can be with each other, phenomenal and just amazing. Rin and Luvia are good too, Rin manages to be super good looking, Luvia is okay, their personalities clash and they fight a lot, but they have some really good moments too. All about Illya and Miyu though, especially Illya, holy crap Illya, I mean…. WOOOOOOOW, it’s that good.

Art/Music/Whatever : Yeah I was so caught up in the show that everything is perfect to me; I can’t actually look for faults, why would I do that to begin with? I fell so hard for this anime that even if there are faults, I’ll look passed them and think about all the enjoyment I had watching this. The fights, the art used for magic, it’s mahou shoujo good, it’s so freaking good, the music, yeah expect to get hyped while watching, the BGM is good, the sound effects are great; the sound effect that goes with Illya’s ability to fly is super cute and will be stuck in your head because you can always hear it. The way it’s all shown is just incredible.

Story is fantastic too; there are 7 cards that need to be collected (Which are actually FATE related characters); only the girls with kaleid-sticks/wands can really do it, since the cards are protected by the character they’re fighting. The kaleid wands allow a girl to transform into a mahou shoujo and perform rather incredibly feats, so when Illya and Miyu do their stuff, it’s so much fun to watch. The transformation scene is beautiful and I’d link a gif, but people would freak out because reasons, but it’s sooo cute and squeeful, joyful cheerful fun.

Special Shout out to Episode 6: HOOOOLLLLLLYYYYYYY CRAP, that just happened. This is the episode that turned Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya from a 10 to freaking infinity, eternity, anime of all time, just so much goooooooood. After that it’s just amazing after amazing after amazing after amazing, because that’s what Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya is: It’s amazing, it’s spectacular, it’s phenomenal, it’s one of the greatest things to exist. It’s the reason why everyone needs to watch the first season, at least the first season, please watch this first season, it’s begging you, I’m begging you, do it for Illya, do it for Episode 6, just…. please.

Specials: Episode 1 of the specials, yes this is good, this is real gooooood, so gooooooood, much good. Episode 5: Holy crap this was amazing, absolutely brilliant and funny; Illya’s mom is just fantastic.

OVA: That dance, oh my gao, yes that was good fun, sparkles make everything better too!

Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya is one of the best things I have ever seen, bar none; it has absolutely everything I would ever look for in a series, cutes, amazing mahou shoujo action, a great and simple story (which gets more complex next season), a cast that invokes only <3, performance from seiyuu that leave you breathless, the scenes are all amazing. I honestly loved every nanosecond I watched Prisma Illya, every single nanosecond and I am so glad I watched it to begin with.

Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 2wei

YESSSSSSS OH MY GAO, AMAZING, SIMPLY AMAZING, JUST AMAZING! <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 <3 AHHHHHH!

It starts up the perfect way, almost recreating the same scene in episode 10 of Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya and then everything is thrown full force into the goodness. A new girl appears, she’s amazing, super cute and just incredible and then episode 2 happens and you’re all like OOOOOH YESSSSS; that intense kissing, the s*****; SHARE THAT MANA, SHARE IT ALL! Illya, Miyu, Chloe, the trifecta, the perfection of perfection. Ahhhh, it’s so good, it’s so damn goooooood ~. Best Fate material ever, just ahhh.

Fan service goodness, oh the greatness that is Fate-kaleid, the perfect compositional mixture of fan service and mahou shoujo. I’ve yet to see anything that does what Prisma Illya 2wei does; Illya, Miyu and Chloe, the angels of the show, the goddesses that they are, 100% <3. I originally planned on writing how Prisma Illya 2wei doesn’t have a lot of fan service, then I realized I was super biased; don’t watch this if you don’t like this content, simple as that. However, if you do, wohooo, we should be friends!! The kissing, the girls, I can’t even talk about but…. it’s the greatest, simply intense and most definitely appreciated…. Ahhhhh, it’s so good, it really is just so freaking amazing and I almost want to have everyone go watch it regardless of how you feel about it, enjoy the mahou shoujo aspects, enjoy the crazy fights and love the girls, so much… just so incredible.

Illya is super adorable, mega cute, she’s still incredible and even with the twist that occurs, it’s still so good; she’s also incredibly smart and the way she deals with fights is incredible and totally unexpected. Chloe is fantastic and instantly lovable. Miyu continues to be great, refined and uplifting, though she’s still mysterious and much is unknown about her, even still, she’s so great! The relationship between all three of them is so good and the way it all comes to fruition in episode 9, you will never see it coming. Illya’s mom; yeah her exposition was awesome. The
nurse
, she’s so going to be involved in season 3, she’s the enigma, the mysterious one, the only person we really don’t know about that’s been shown. She seems to know what’s going on, but we don’t know why or how, I want to see her get more screen time for sure. I hope Shirou doesn’t get more screen time, I want the yuri to unfold, we don’t need him, baaaah, get him out of here! (I know about some Fate material, so I get it).

Fate-kaleid liner Prisma☆Illya 2wei still looks amazing, the fights are still the best, the music, animation, girls, it’s all perfect. A lot of people seem to say that it has no right being this good, but it has all the rights in the world, all of them, to be this good. Ilya is <3, Chloe is <3, Miyu is <3.

As you’ve noticed, I’m not talking about the plot in Season 2, because I don’t want to spoil a darn thing about it, if you enjoyed the first season and feel like you can handle the ecchi nature of 2wei, give it a go, the story and exposition and mysterious-ness is all incredible and soooo badass, especially the last first, holy crap at the last fight….. you will never see it coming, I mean… you actually won’t unless you’re a genius, it’s so damn good, Miyu <3 Illya <3 Chloe <3.

The way the season ends, the fact it’s now summer, there is going to be so much good involved. Summer + Fate kaleid is already a winner, follow it up with the mahou shoujo and it’s going to just…. I can’t…. like…. Mana Sharing, more of that…. ~

Specials: Episode 1: This was really funny, very good, much appreciated. Episode 3: Yessssss Mana Sharing, yessssssss! Episode 4: Super cute china dresses on all the girls, yes great short! Episode 5: Wowowowow!!!! Simulation mode is fun!

OVA: The kissing, the grinding, the animation and noises, the intense passion, Illya x Chloe, oh my gao, that was too good, that was just way too freaking good, so good, perfection!!!! One of the best things ever, simply put. ~~ <3 <3 <3 <3 ~~
