Dishonored: DE (PS4/XBO) - In the days that follow, your trials will be great

They aren't advertising it because its not worth the money, really. They've already spent a lot of money on marketing the game originally, all of that communication costs a lot of money. They've already got that level of brand awareness and recall that they need. They're releasing this with as small of a budget as possible in order to make the most money, and that includes a marketing budget.

They're not trying to convince you to double dip, what they are doing is taking advantage of their strong branding and previous marketing efforts to put the product on the ps4. Their strategy is to use the previous marketing and have it available on storefronts and stores on ps4, where people will probably just pick if it up if they haven't played it. Under that context, it will definitely make its money back, but that kind of segment isn't worth pursuing with a proper integrated communication plan like the first time.
Releasing a YouTube video that's like 3 minutes long that goes over the details of it only costs like, 1 hour of wages for the person talking/playing and another hour for the person editing the video. I don't think anyone is asking for a billboard in Times Square but uploading a video to YouTube is basically free.

While I agree with the sentiment your calculations are grossly simplified. Putting together a professional looking trailer that holds up to scrutiny and then editing it would take much longer than that.

But not saying they shouldn't do it of course, just that it isn't as easy as you make it sound.

This is a retail game right? Seems odd they'd pay the expense of producing boxed copies for a product they don't seem to think is worth making a single pre-release trailer for.

Odd but they do have the box art and pre-orders up and such, so I don't care. It is a remaster after all, not much to say.

It is weird though.

This isn't meant to be a big release. It's just spreading brand awareness leading up to the market push for Dishonored 2 next year.

Chillax.
I really don't understand what's so unreasonable about wanting to know a bit more about a remaster before it releases. It'd be nice to at least get something. How's performance? Is it even 60FPS? Any new modes or challenges? Any visual enhancements, textures, lighting, etc? Anything at all? Whoever's in charge of this is completely incompetent.

Well then, even a blog post somewhere would suffice. :p

You might say its free, but in actuality its the opportunity cost from having your marketing team work on something else. Keep in mind they have Fallout 4 and Doom coming out, two projects that are massively more profitable. Also in a marketing department its not quite as easy as creating a youtube video because you feel like it. There are processes in place to make sure it aligns with your integrated communications plan, and evidently they don't see the money in taking the effort to inform people of a game they already are aware of.

I was being a little facetious and understating how much work it is for my point, but I was trying to say that it's not that much effort or money to at least give people a reminder that the game is coming out in a few days, and a reason to upgrade. They paid for the port and the physical production of the games so surely it's worth at least a mention.

Not even a single tweet sure looks like the port is simply awful.
I mean, one of the devs COULD say something to spark some interest in the damn thing already.

Looks fishy as hell actually.

Right, because people might not like what they hear. How many developers do you know that purposely hide the fact that a game is 60fps?

A YT video may not be free, but it is the cheapest and fastest way to get word out. A 2-3 minute YT isn't that expensive or effortful for an organization of Bethesda's size and scope. There's really no meaningful excuse for this. Why even bother with this DE if this is how they're going to release it?

All this silence is telling me is that they are trying to hide something.

After all the issues with broken promises, downgrades, hype trains, pre-order fuckery and bullshots over the past year, you would think a publisher just releasing a game and letting it be judged on its merits would be a good thing.

But no. According to some gaffers this is the biggest "fuck you" in the history of gaming.

This is why we can't have nice things.

The type of consumers they're targeting don't really care about that. They are absolutely releasing this with one main strategy in mind, which is to pursue people who have heard of dishonoured but haven't played it, and have a newer generation console. The kind of guy who will buy a game because he heard of Dishonoured and know that its quite good, but doesn't need to look hard into his purchases in the same way. The kind of guy who is led more by the content of the game than the technology.

So how many thousands of dollars would a tweet confirming that it's 60fps cost?

I mean, only a few people care about that so a regular dev could just tweet it out and it could be picked up and shared by and for those who care about that stuff.

They just aren't concerned with the people who would care about that stuff. I'm not defending them, I don't even know if its 60fps. But its indicative of nothing, its just how the marketing industry works. Its a question of strategy, its not malicious in nature. Marketing departments exist to sell products, not to cater to the public's every whim and question.

I don't think it's a big fuck you but I'm fairly doubtful of the quality of the port, considering how many shitty 'remasters' we have seen that had little marketing behind it before it comes out.

I also don't mind a game being judged on its merits when there's little marketing, as long as it's in a form of a demo, not from me putting up money for it.

So unlike Uncharted, which is a day one buy, I'm waiting to see if the port is any good. Right now though, looking at how hush hush it has been, makes me fairly doubtful.

I sure did thought it through.

Top notch rebuttal though.

Completely hiding the state of a game and any information on it while at the same time taking preorders is just as bad as "broken promises, downgrades, hype trains, pre-order fuckery and bullshots"

Luckily there are websites who analyze such things. If Bethesda isn't gonna release information, then there's nothing to do but wait for it from other sources.

If it winds up being a bleh port at least I'll feel less bad than I did last E3 where the remaster announcement came right after I'd bought the original Dishonored in a sale on Steam.

In a post Silent Hill HD Collection world I can understand people being paranoid about a remaster having virtually no media about it less than a week before launch.

With how quiet this game has been it certainly doesn't inspire confidence to jump in early, especially with some of the lackluster (Sleeping Dogs) to downright poor (Prototype, Saints Row) remasters we've got before.

I probably wouldn't jump in at first anyway since I have the GotY edition on the PS3 but 60fps would go a long way in convincing me to double dip.

Yeah i'll wait on the Eurogamer take on this.

In lawsuits if they can't keep that promise? Several thousand, several refunds.

I'm digging people thinking that editing a trailer or even a letsplay, or a gameplay trailer showcasing new features is 2 hours of work. Lol. They have to play the game, capture the footage, run through it, log it. Have a team look through it, pick best segments, do a paper edit, write dialogue for the trailer, record it. Then edit, then export, it's rough, preview, make adjustments, make it tighter, export, preview, have your graphics team do titles, lower third in style of the game, pop ups showcasing the changes, sync them to the voice over, export, final preview, final notes, final edit, final export, upload. You're looking at least a week.

Or hire one of the YouTube kids who do those amazing kills in the game, on consoles, gift them the game, have them record a thing or two, upload. You're looking at 2 weeks then. Getting comfortable with the controls, practicing the kills, uploading the footage, make sure everyone is happy, and promote.

Fact is that it's a hell of a good game that was a major surprise with many, and a lot of people will double dip mainly because of that.

Press release is also a lot of work.

This game has been in the back of best buy for over 2 weeks now. Everytime I read this thread I just want to take one and play it for you guys lol. And I dont even play dishonered.

I played this in 1080p with 4xSGSSAA using a Geforce gtx 580 and a sandy bridge cpu. As I remember it, the performance was solidly in the 60 fps range. 1080p with post-processing anti-aliasing and sub 60 fps for current gen is disappointing if true ...

They expect the game to sell a week before the busiest release period of the year starts without any info or advertising. Do they think people will just buy it again without any details? "trailer costs money" a blog post that just says "hey it looks like pc on high - ultra with 30fps" or whatever costs nothing.

It's not really a big deal. If you've played Dishonored before you can afford to wait until after launch to hear how it is. If you haven't played it well, it's not like this is gonna be worse than the other console options.

Yeah, maybe a YT video ain't free, but Bethesda is a major publisher. They have the resources to throw together a 90 second trailer detailing a quick rundown of enhancements. It doesn't even need anyone on screen or VO narration. They had plenty of time to do this.

And if a YT video is so difficult for them, then a blog can do. How about a tweet? A forum post?

That they are showing absolutely nothing really is inexcusable.

In the spirit of the game, the marketing team decided to do a stealth marketing campaign. It's actually been an amazing success, it's a shame no one appreciates how wonderfully meta it is.

No, no it's really not. All of those things are the exact opposite of letting a game be judged solely on its merits post-release.

The exact opposite.

I actually would even be fine with a locked 30 at 900p.

My fear is just, that it will run sub 30 or has some weird bugs that never get patched ...

Hopefully we get some gamer impressions tomorrow for both PS4 and Xbox One.

Stunned at the amount of apologists for lazy remasters.

If the remaster is bad there'll be plenty of complaining.

On the other hand, if you've waited until now for dishonored might as well wait a few days more until it's clear how it performs?

Halo MCC should prove that marketing means little.

I got a pretty crappy PC that is well below the power of both consoles. Old Core 2 Quad and a GTX750.

From the little I have played of the PC version I get pretty similar performance to what I was getting with Borderlands 2.

Both are UE3 games so I guess it makes sense. 1080 and 60fps with some heavy dips to the 30's when stuff pops off.

I see no reason this game couldn't do 60fps on consoles like the borderlands games other then its a development decision to get it out quicker and with less work involved.

I hear you, but I meant run the above video at 1080p/60 FPS so maybe we could see if the footage looks like it could be from a higher resolution, or possibly run better than current console versions ;)

That's perfectly reasonable. Every product should have this sort of scrutiny.

But my question is: Who the fuck is saying you CANT do that? The game will be released on Tuesday and you will have twitch streams, reviews and everything. More than enough info to determine if the port is worth your time.

I'm going to assume that's Xbox One footage. I'm on mobile so I can't really tell resolution -- maybe someone with a decent rig can try to run it at 1080/60 and see what it looks like.

It's very likely footage from the original Dishonored on Xbox 360.
