Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

I'm having a small problem with netplay, I'm trying to play Mario Kart Wii with my brother, and to both of us when we run the game separately, it runs perfectly.

But when i try to host and he connects, fps drops from rock solid 60 to 20, then spikes back up to 55, then again 33, and so on.

I have followed instructions from the official dolphin tutorial, everything is the same with both of our configs, and I truly don't know what to do. I have also taken into consideration pad buffer(latency).

So any help would be greatly appreciated!

Any recommendation on Rogue Leader settings? I get it to work on build 7157, but having massive slowdowns when explosions happen in the death star attack mission, wondering could it be that my CPU is not powerful enough?

Build:
Xeon E3 1230 V2 (server equivalent of an i7 3770)
16GB
Windows 10 x64
GTX 970

Settings:
D3D
DSP LLE recompiler
Default CPU clock
Default resolution
Skip EFB Access checked
Store EFB Copies to Texture Only unchecked
No custom textures

Rogue Squadron games are just buggy in general right now, lot of software trickery that isn't yet properly emulated, so you'll have a tough time running full speed on any setup and speeds can vary wildly from build to build.

On Dolphin forums there are a lot of successful examples with HD texture pack and high resolutions running at 60fps with little to no slowdowns, was asking there as well.

Hi all,

has someone problem with Ishiiruka dolphin version + Hypatia textures for Wind Waker? Many HD textures not load. I try every possible combination settings but not works. Some small textures and HUD works fine but the environment textures not load. With official dolphin everything works without problem but is unplayable with many lags...

Set texture cache accuracy(?) to safe.

Yes I try but it did not help. Latest Hypatia pack works with "safe" settings texture cache. From dolphin-emu I got this answer

"I already know what the problem is. It's because Ishiiruka doesn't load .jpg files. That project(Hyaptia's Wind Waker HD Project) is full of .jpg textures."

Some time ago I went a little crazy trying to get those HD textures to work for Wind Waker. I finally go them working after trying various different versions of Dolphin, sorry but I forgot which one worked for me.

Basically every graphics/texture mod I tried myself looked weird or/and made the game almost unplayable with constant stutter.

That's something Ishiiruka addresses, I believe, but yeah I had the same experience in regular Dolphin.

Mario Galaxy has this annoying bug/glitch/weird setting that if you use the controller's stick to move the pointer, it dissappears when you move it over to the Yes button. Can't start or save the game due to it, but the normal KB+M controls work fine. I have yet to order my Dolphin bar, so it's a bit of a pity I can't play SMG since the game would work fine with a controller if you map it correctly. I found someone having this same issue on the forums in a 4 year old thread, but no working solution. Does anyone know a solution maybe, or it is Dolphin's fault?

I was reading the dolphin blog about the new HLE audio emulation and decided to give Wind Waker a try. However, even though it is running @30fps all the time, I can feel some random stuttering. Overclocking my CPU (3570k) to 4.3Ghz did not help. :(
edit: oops, forgot that my desktop refresh rate was set to 75Hz, changed it to 30Hz and it seems to be fine now.

Can't you select it using the main stick?

I finished SMG2 using the 360 controller only.

I finished SMG2 using the 360 controller only.

I fixed it, set something stupid in the controls that I thought wouldn't have an effect. Binded the tilt controls (for the rolling ball levels) to the same stick, but didn't know Dolphin emulated the Wii Remote going out of bounds too. Cleared it and everything works fine now.

Diving back into some time with Dolphin VR, had been since the Oculus Rift dk1 that I tried it. Lordy the improvements they've made, being able to use low persistence (smooths motion) makes re-experiencing games such a treat. Used a guide from reddit to get Thousand Year Door working well on it, it's the perfect game for VR, all the environments look like dioramas that sit at about chest level so you can lean in and take in all the details. So cool.

Unfortunately Mario Galaxy 2 has visual bugs galore with the VR branch of Dolphin, though it still looks cool as hell seeing the bigger levels and looking around seeing things at large scale. Going underwater creates a disorienting visual distortion where when underwater the underwater area turns into a flat plane with the rest of the world being rendered in 3d behind it. Haven't tried RE4 yet, curious how that'll look scale wise. Is it that hard setting up a wii remote for use with PC? Pretty sure all I need is a bluetooth dongle for extra hardware.

Zero lag as far as I can tell.

In fact, on the HDTV I'm currently using, I'm prretty sure Dolphin + GC adapter + RadeonPro has less input lag than the actual gamecube itself.
Interesting, I might be tempted to pick one up then. I've got the old Mayflash adapter, and the lag, while slight, is definitely noticeable in something like Melee.

Oh I haven't tested input lag in comparison to other controllers. I'll compare with a PS3 controller later.
As for the HDTV remark I made, keep in mind it's an HDTV with inherent input lag and all that. I haven't played Melee on a CRT in a long time and I dunno how things would compare if Dolphin was connected to a CRT.

Edit: The official Gamecube Adapter input latency feels at least as good as that of a PS3 controller.

Picked up one of those Wii U GC Adapters, and can can confirm that there is much less lag than with something like the Mayflash. Definitely the best way to play GC titles

Hi.

Bought a dolphin bar. The problem is that my laptop won't read the disc and I can't install the software.

Any other way to deal with this?

nvm, now it works.

Gaf, is it at all worth investing worth in one of those DVD drives that are capable of reading actual Wii discs? Will Dolphin let you play right off the disc like PCSX2?

I still play a LOT of Wii games, on my Wii U in 480pi. I have a new, very good computer and could be using Dolphin instead, but my discs... I don't know if this sounds silly, but playing ripped ISO's just wouldn't be the same...

Why would you want discs? The read speed of a SSD is so much faster than a DVD drive, plus it makes noise and wears down your disc. I think Dolphin can let you play off the disc if you have the right drive, but why would you? Just rip the Wii games using your Wii U, it's not hard and perfectly legal.

You would probably be better off using a Wii or Wii U to rip the discs. There's not much point in buying a DVD drive to do it. Dolphin cannot run games right off the game disc. They need to be ripped.

Dolphin cannot play games off the disc. They need to be ripped. Also if you want to get technical ripping Wii games probably isn't perfectly legal but pretty much no one actually cares about that point.

What? You are allowed to make personal copies of media you own as long as you still own the original. Of course, that's here in Europe, I do not know how the law is in the US.

Yeah, of course it depends on where you live. For example in the US it is legal to make a backup copy of a game you own but it's not legal to circumvent things like copy protection to do so as that would violate the DMCA. GameCube and Wii discs just so happen to have built in copy protection measures. In the UK it is even worse. You can't even legally rip a CD you own to your computer there.

I see. I don't think anybody will ever make a fuss about it though, since the target group is small, I legitimately bought those games and nobody's losing money over it (not even lost sales, since it can't be sold on PC). Sometimes I wonder what Nintendo's internal stance is on Dolphin. Are they amazed too by how good their games can look, or do they totally dislike emulation because they see it as piracy. We will never know.

Because I'm just attatched to my discs. I paid money for them and when I play a game I want to use them. It's not really a logical thing.

Well, that sucks. Alright, thanks.

I got a new laptop yesterday, and no matter what settings I choose, it stutters. My low end desktop handles the same settings without a problem though.

Laptop specs:

CPU: i7 4700hq
RAM: 16GB DDR3
GPU: Nvidia GTX 860m
OS: Win 8.1

Desktop specs:

CPU: i5 4430 (Intel HD 4600)
RAM: 12GB
OS: Win 8.1

Would trying a dev build make a difference?

Welcome to the world of laptops and Nvidia Optimus, where programs use the Intel iGPU by default and specific programs have to be manually set to use the Nvidia GPU, for power-saving reasons.
Right-click the desktop --> Nvidia Control Panel --> Manage 3D settings --> Program Settings --> Add the Dolphin program, set preferred graphics processor to High-performance NVIDIA processor.
Also check out the Dolphin forum's unofficial laptop performance guide.

Both dev builds and release candidate builds should be fine. Just don't use the stable builds, they're incredibly out of date.

Games play fine for me but my problem is for some games like Tony Hawk on GameCube,
it plays "to fast". Is there a way to "slow down" the game so I actually have time to do tricks like when playing on console.

What do you have Framelimit set to in the config? If it isn't already set it to Auto.

Anyone know if Dolphin VR works with the 7.0 Runtime? Also what is the link to the newest version of Dolphin VR?

This build should work: https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/101772879/dolphin-vr-x64-4.0-8949-06.exe

It's just binary data man, that's a bit OCD. The discs won't make any difference in your gaming experience.
Think of it this way: you won't be handling the discs and potentially scratching or dirtying them at least

By default Dolphin should run games at the exact same speed as an actual GameCube, loading times and slowdowns and all. Did you change any other settings?
Might be a PAL vs NTSC thing, but otherwise there shouldn't be any speed differences.

I knocked the FPS to 55 and it plays more normally now. Weird that this problem only surfaces with Tony Hawk games

Check out the controller configuration guide. There isn't really one perfect setup for an Xbox controller with Wii games as Wii games have a number of different input styles so you may have to experiment a bit depending on the game. Also note that if you want to play MotionPlus games they will require an actual Wii remote.

I assume I can play my games from disc yes?

No. They need to be ripped.
