NPD Sales Results for August 2015 [PS4 #1 HW/SW, 7M Amiibos LTD, 600K LTD Splatoon]

The Last of Us missed out. It was slightly under.

Hmm. I mis-remembered then.

I think that some people are overestimating Uncharted 4's debut potential though. The 10M+ for Uncharted 3 includes a shitload of bundling and free software giveaways. Overtime, a lot of Sony's first party stuff ends up with impressive LTD shipments for similar reasons. Look at the first Littlebigplanet.

Man, it's seeming less and less likely there will be a PS4 price cut this year. I've been holding out out of fear a cut/larger HDD SKU is just around the corner. I hope they announce if they have any new holiday plans soon.

There's no reason to wait with some of the good bundles that are out there. Even if you sell stuff like Madden and unity thats probably $50 right there.

7 million Amiibos. Looks like once this whole video games fad blows over, Microsoft can go back to selling Office, Sony can go back to selling financial services, and Nintendo can go back to selling cool toys.

I don't see why some people are so confident that Halo will outsell Uncharted. Firstly, we have the Nathan Drake Bundle (which will help reintroduce the Uncharted brand to those who may have forgotten), secondly, we know that 40% of PS4 owners are people who never owned a PS3 and a huge chunk of those are going to be 360 owners, thirdly, Millions of people will have been exposed to the quality of ND because of TLOUR, fourthly and supposedly the last (MGSV effect), Uncharted 4 is going to be the most thrilling and visually incredible entry for the franchise, and fifthly (that sound wrong) the marketing behind Uncharted: A Thief's End will be insane and will probably accompany a price drop.

I'm not too sure Halo will outsell it.

In US will be a easy victory. Halo 4 sold 3.2m on first month, Uncharted 3 sold less than 900k.

Even with Halo 5 going down (what is possible) and Uncharted 4 going up (possible too), the difference in the size of the franchises on US market will remain big.

Halo will outsell Uncharted, the discussion is only by how much.

Before you guys go nuts with your bets. Have we had an exclusive game move over 1 million units in a month yet?

None this gen yet, but since 2002 for Sony, only God of War III made it.

While Microsoft has had 8 million sellers since 2002:

  • Halo 2
  • Halo 3
  • Halo 3 ODST
  • Halo Reach
  • Halo 4
  • Gears of War
  • Gears of War 2
  • Gears of War 3

All those Halos except for ODST did an amazing 3 million + in its launch month in NPD.

I'm sure Nintendo has a ton of them as well.

Halo 5 will kill it with proper marketing. Its already turning out to be hot title from the things we have seen so far. With ESL stuff around the corner, its going to have big legs.

I believe bungie going multi platform hurt the xbox brand alot.

Before Bungie announce Destiny, I was thinking it was so smart of Microsoft to let Bungie to do its own thing and then bought exclusive for it, all the while leaving Halo to the somewhat star studded 343i.

Gears and Rare also had a really nice deal from the Microsoft Store, if you preordered either one you got $15 in xbox live credit posted after 15 days. So a $30 game became $15 and a $40 became $25.

Until Dawn did better than I thought it would, especially with virtually no marketing and not much buzz and a $60 price tag. Its twitch popularity sorta charted that too, with 70k viewers in the UD channels the first week but down to under 2k now, 3 weeks later.

Is Splatoon at 600k in USA good? That seems super low to me, we're at what almost 5m Wii U's sold in the USA. I know Wii U games can have long legs but are there really that many people left who would still want to buy it?

i know how important winning (by quantity) is for microsoft so is a holiday with pricetag $299, 3 free games, Samsung TV and 3 month XBL GOLD a safe bet?

Based on Minecraft, I wouldn't hold your breath for anything other than Madden being much over 200k this month. I wouldn't be surprised if the top 10 bottomed out at less than 100k.

I remember those games:

Super Smash Bros Brawl: 2,700,000
Super Mario Galaxy: 1,120,000
Mario Kart Wii: 1,120,000

If we are just looking at companies, you can add some Pokemon to that as well.

Right!

Pokémon B/W: 2,400,000
Pokémon D/P : 1,757,000

There was a huge gap in favour of the 360 last gen but now there's a small gap in favour of the PS4. There are also a lot of people who owned 360s that are now PS4 owners. I really think it's not as obvious as people believe. I'm still going to lean towards Halo but I'm not 100% certain.

I'm not sure if I'm ready to assume Halo 5 debuts to over 3 mill but I think anything less than 2.5 would be a disappointment.

I don't think U4 will even approach 2 mill month one.

I agree, the whole statement is strange, don't they usually just say thanks for the support?is the Madden comment true if you include bundles?

Ya afaik they usually say "ya, we sold the most hardware and software, thanks for the support". I get the call outs to Madden and such, that makes sense since those are part of NPD. The BLOPS3 statement is just so out of place haha

It's been a while since I visited NPD threads. Xbox one exclusives seem to be doing quite well considering the negative launch the system had. Is the Xbox one doing well relatively to its launch and PS4?

Also, it's really nice to see Splatoon selling great numbers for a new IP. I hope this encourages Nintendo to experiment more often when it comes to games that are more ambitous in scope and production values.

Only because Until Dawn is #7 and Heavy Rain was #10 that's doesn't mean Until Dawn sold more...

Not sure how this comparison works. Ranking #10 in one month can be higher than #7 in another month with sales volume.

True. But I highly doubt it since back then Heavy Rain was dodged with a lot of skepticism by many gamers. In fact more people were claiming that they're not going to buy it back then. In contrast, the reception for Until Dawn is a lot more positive.

It all depends on what released that month (and the month before). For example, The #10 game in September is probably going to sell more than the #5 game in August this year with the amount of new releases we have.

NFL sold best on PS4? Free copy effect?

It certainly could be that enough copies were included in Xbox One bundles that the NPD retail numbers showed the PlayStation 4 version selling more this month.

We had a similar effect at the Destiny launch last year.

Shh don't break the carefully crafted illusion that just because UD is number 7 this month that it did well.

Judging by the long standing games that it's around, I'd guess that Until Dawn is probably somewhere around 100-150K, which I'd argue isn't bad for what the game is. I think the thing that hurts the idea of whether it's a success or not (and whether it gets a sequel) is how long the game was in development (remember that it started out as a PS3 Move title), and if Sony thinks that now that they have the formula for it down they can get another one out quicker.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Somewhat surprised PS4 took the month with Gears and Rare out, not too mention Madden deal.

Well, the next month up for grabs is definitely October now. That will be an amazing NPD thread no matter who "wins."

Totally forgot its NPD day. I see some things never change like PS being #1. It kinda puts more emphasis on price cuts for the holiday season for Xbox One :D. Definitely gifdy about Black Friday now. Also with a long Nintendo lull, seems NX can't come soon enough. Glad to see Until Dawn do well too. Now where is the apple pies with whipped Cream :p

We have full top 10 numbers before Fall 2010. Heavy Rain debuted with 219k sales.
