Until Dawn |OT| I know what you'll play this summer

I'll mention a cheat to anyone who doesn't want to mess up the game due to their fucked up:

After each major situation where you successfully completed the game (you make the decision), quit and copy the save file elsewhere (cloud - turn off auto-update first OR USB - saver option). Then go back to the game. So if you fuck up, you can load the save file from the previous moment where you haven't fucked up.

But seriously, if this is your first go, just play it regardless of consequences. It's only later on when you try to mop up for trophies that you may want to use this cheat.

I found that if you just hold in the PS button and close application immediately upon a bad outcome you can reload before the bad thing

Yeah, as long as you're quick, you can manage it. Me and my friends did it once towards the end of the game because there was a shooting segment and I asked people what they wanted me to shoot at and in that time late game spoiler
Chris got beheaded :(
. So I immediately quit the game and went back in :p

Just started playing this tonight. A couple of chapters in and I'm liking it a lot so far. Amazing presentation, really solid dialogue and acting, excellent pacing and I really like the psychoanalysis stuff with Peter Stormare, even if his face is a little bit creepy.

Very impressed.

Finished it last night...

I felt like such an asshole when I didn't wait the one more time for Mike to leave. I'm such an asshole.

Four survivors.

Went through it this week-end. Thought I was doing pretty good until the last few hours...
finished with three survivors :|

Sam
Matt
and
Chris

I was pretty sad when I lost my favorite character
Ash
because of a stupid mistake.

I found that if you just hold in the PS button and close application immediately upon a bad outcome you can reload before the bad thing

why even play the game then ?

What's the logic with the flare gun?
I gave it to Matt but it never even came up again. Both Matt and Emily survived in my game.

There's little logic behind it

- If you give Matt the flare gun and he has high approval with Em, he shoots it automatically which is a no no.
- If you have low approval Matt keeps it, which he can later use if he tries to save Em twice but fails. He uses it to defend himself against the creature.
- If Em keeps it, either with low or high approval, she can use it to avoid getting bitten, which would avoid all of the awkwardness with the "does the bite make you turn" business.

If he doesn't use it right after getting it and you keep trying to save Emily instead of jumping clear, he will apparently use it to save himself. If you don't have he dies.

If you jump clear instead of trying to save Emily then it never gets used.

This is what I've heard.

which again it's silly logic
so high approval makes him shoot it automatically, but keeping in character high approval should make him try and save her twice and therefore keep the flare gun to survive. Which is silly

That's actually not how I took it. I
jumped to safety because I felt going any further on the platform would surely kill her. I thought there would be some twist after landing to save her.

I just never saw the
flare gun
mentioned again after she gave it to him so I didn't understand what the paths were.

Hmmm so having finished this this evening, I thoroughly enjoyed it and I definitely feel it's a "PlayStation classic" - the sort of game I'd want to keep around in boxed form to go back to later in the gen. That said, I do agree with some reviewers who said that the game kind of just fizzles out. I thought it was absolutely fantastic and tense, right up to Chapter
9
and then the story just kind of fizzles out, and ends pretty unsatisfyingly imo (I managed to save everyone first time through, too).

Also, fuck the
don't move spam
at the end. Ended up turning off vibration and just leaving my controller on the table, lol.

Now you have my interest. I have no idea what you're talking about with Matt
because he fell off a cliff due to crazy deer. I'm guessing he can get past that and go up to the fire tower with Emily? Also I know he can make it down the cliff alive because I saw it in the making of clips :p
actually sounds quite complex as Emily's
solo escape was fairly straightforward

Is there a website with a summary of the key actions for each chapter without being spoilery? Looking for the chapter where
mike and Jessica go to the cabin because I want to try being less of a dick to her
, and also the chapter that leads to
Matt and Emily and the deer (I guess that would be them heading out to the cable car office)

Yep if you
didnt hit the bird in the beginning or attack the deer, you can walk pass them with no problem

Damn. I need to get out of the habit of reacting to every QTE. I did it for your first example (does that go horribly wrong otherwise?), but messed up with Matt.

some of the characters I don't really want to mess with too much -
jessica seems quite difficult to kill. I'm guessing she'll fall down the mine whatever happens, and getting out of the mine was fairly straightforward

I....did the same
and also feel Bad about it. But I was sure, I wouldn't made one more of those hold still events.

Also Four survivors. Great game, some length in the end but that is ok.

Jess can die at the beginning when you're chasing after her with Mike. If you're too slow getting there she dies.

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.

I'm pretty close to saving everyone so I might do that via the episodes (can probably do it jumping in around chapter 5), and then maybe go for a 'kill everyone' full run through, being an absolute bastard to everyone and getting them all into fights :D

Finished the game just now. It's absolutely amazing and I can't wait to play it again. I'll spoiler what happened in my playthrough, just in case:

I was very pleased with my playthrough. The only mistake I made was getting Matt killed. I chose to save Emily but she fell into into the mine. Matt moved on but was taken by the wendigo and was put onto a hook and died. He was the first one to die. Josh was the second (and last) to die, but I didn't feel bad about it seeing as he was the psycho.

For ages I thought Jess was dead, even though Mike got there very quickly, so I was very surprised and pleased to see that she was alive. She successfully got out the mine and was the first one to survive 'Until Dawn'.

I was desperate for Chris and Ashley to survive seeing as I'd grown quite fond of them. They luckily survived with no real problems. Emily made it out as well along with Sam and Mike. Apart from Matt, everyone I wanted to survive did, so I'm quite pleased about that.

The final scene in the cabin was tense as fuck and I was glad that Sam and Mike lived through it. The Sanitorium and Sanitorium redux were probably my favourite parts of the game.

Overall, the game is really good and I hope they make another one. I'm excited to see what they could bring to a second game. I'd give it a 9.5/10. The only thing I didn't like was that I failed 80% of the don't move parts because there was almost no warning before it happened. Other than that the game was great.
That's the point of it. Irl you wouldn't get a warning. It's brilliant

Creamium

shut uuuuuuuuuuuuuuup
I beat the game yesterday and it's been a while since a finale or game's final act messed with my head this much, mainly because I had a very bad ending, and I had so many regrets afterwards. I want to beat this game again asap to get the best ending, because mine was a real downer. Time to break it down

It looked good for a while, but in the end only Sam and Jessica survived. I was really bummed out. What happened to everyone:

- Matt was the first to go. Didn't give him the flare gun, tried to save Em twice, which led to too much lost time => dead. I didn't mind this one too much
- Emily died on the moving track. Instead of jumping I stayed on, then missed the button prompt. Emily puree. This one sucked because she was getting less annoying, slowly becoming a bit of a survivor.
- Chris: UGH. This one sucked so much. Way too slow to aim (was doing it with the left stick wtf) and the Wendigo got him.
- Ashley: another facepalm. "Oh, Jess is alive! That has to be her pounding on the plank". NOPE. At this point I'd seen 3 characters die in a span of minutes, it sucked
- Josh: I got every single twin clue, except the last one. And apparently that's the one you need to survive. He got his head smashed in. Everything went wrong in my run :p
- Mike: I hit every single Wendigo, never missed a prompt, got to the cabin... Then decided to let Sam play the hero so I could light the wendigos up. Didn't think Mike would end up in the blast as well.

I felt so bad when the credits rolled, but I loved it at the same time, because it's rare I think about a game this much after it's done. I remember every single mistake I made and characters that got the axe. To top it off
Jess survived, one of the few characters I really couldn't stand.

I was wondering if anyone had a similar crappy ending and felt bad because of it. If there ever was a game with replay value this is it. I need a better ending, need redemption hah.

One complaint though: just baffling there's no option to invert the y-axis to aim. Another game that lacks this, unbelievable. I'll probably switch to motion controls for aiming. I was too slow struggling with 'normal' aim
leading to character deaths

So I just started the game but I already know how the 'prologue' ends but I've been wondering...

Do both have to die or can I see one of them?

Edit: Oh, that was the point. XD

Just finished chapter 5 last night. Really impressed with this so far - it really sensibly takes a while with the set-up, and you know shit's going to hit the fan at some point, but you're just waiting for it to happen. The psychoanalysis stuff with Peter Stormare is really interesting, and I love its use of the DualShock 4 - for instance, having to stay completely still is such an incidental feature, but it makes so much sense in context and it's a really good use of the controller.

Story-wise, I thought it was going to be that
Josh had called everyone back as a trap to kill them in revenge for the death of his sisters (maybe with the 'cooler' one of them having survived the fall and they were working together), but seeing as he was the first to die in my game that's obviously not the case. I also wondered whether the psychologist was the murderer, but now I'm beginning to think that maybe the patient in his office is the Psycho?
Anyway, I'm thoroughly engrossed by the premise and I think the story presentation is superb. I hope to finish it over the weekend (I assume there's
10
chapters?) and I've played about 4 hours so far.

Okay I just had Chris tell Ash...

All of the information regarding what he has found after finding the threat letter to Hannah. Holy shit I didn't realize that since I found the phone message that he would mention it. I thought when they said that notes and such could help effect events I thought that just meant in the choices you make. This is amazing. What if I hadn't found that answering machine!?

Also is there sometimes multiple paths to take? I don't mean dialogue choices but actual multiple paths that change the story? Cause I see two paths but I have no idea which one leads to totems and the other which continues the story.

Cause I'm at the part where Chris...

Has to go find Ash. I have a fork in the road and I have no idea which one will continue the story.

Anyone able to tell me?

Just finished, only
Josh
died, not really sure how to avoid that either.

Ending was insanely tense, I had to literally set my controller on my footrest.

When you begin chapter 10 with Sam and Mike, explore the area around the lake before finding Josh. You will find a clue that is necessary to keep Josh alive

Hm... The more I play the more I feel like some deaths are completely out of my control... It's starting to get annoying in that way. D:

Kalentan

Nah, they're completely in your control. Otherwise, keep playing.

But like...

I chased after Jessica succesfully as Mike, even used all possible short cuts and only missed one quick time event. Despite that she died regardless. So what was the point in failing or succeeding if she was just going to die?

What do you mean by she died? Is it:

A. Mike found her semi-conscious on the lift and then the lift fell down.
B. Mike was late and she fell down from the tower and her jaw is ripped open (the game shows you where you failed in flashback tinted color). Then the lift fell down.

There's a big difference.

If it's A, keep playing.
She's still alive.
If it's B, it's your mistake since you failed the QTE. Although IIRC, I once failed one QTE and she's still alive regardless. I think the game was forgiving depending on which part of the QTE you failed.

Okay, it was A.

I guess thus far the only one of my peeps who have died is...
Matt
.

Can you save him by...
Jumping instead of trying to grab Emily? But then does she die or does she still go through the cavern?

You can save them both if you jump to safety as Matt. The game gives you two chances to do it.

You can save him depending on a choice you made earlier in the game. But yea him jumping is the best option. But again, he can come out alive from both options. The one you chose just depended on a choice from earlier.

Just finished the game. 2 people died
Jessica and Sam.

Pretty devastated by both of their deaths.
Was really happy to see Jessica was alive after all this while, but then she died just a few moments later when Matt found him. Sam died right at the end trying to save Mike, I didn't succeed on the final "don't move" phase
:(

Really great experience overall, I thought the story was pretty solid too for a horror movie/game. Definitely a contender for my GOTY :)

My survivors were,
Mike, Chris and Emily.

Matt got killed by having his face impaled on a hook. Honestly couldn't see any way out of that. The Butterfly effect thing said he didn't have a weapon, but he fired the flare gun without me even telling him to I think. Also confused as to why a Wendigo would kill him that way when in every other case they've gone for using their bare hands to remove/rip apart people's heads.
Jess got killed because she tried to run. Realised right away it was stupid rather than hiding.
Ashley got her head twisted off for investigating a noise she thought was Jessica. Nobody in the group seemed to notice her missing.
Sam was killed in a bullshit third in a row "Don't move" in the cabin at the end where even though I didn't move it decided to flag up and kill her anyway. Was I supposed to just go straight for the light switch?
Josh got dragged off by Hannah-Wendigo because they recognised each other. Saw him post-credits half turned into a Wendigo and eating a head.

Think I might have to do another playthrough, maybe just use a guide this time for maximum survivors and to find all the clues/totems

is this game buggy for anyone else?

just started tonight, got to the snowball scene with mike and jess and the game hung trying to get to the next scene. stayed black for like 2 minutes. i tried to quit the application, but then my whole ps4 got black screened. manually turned off the ps4 and it's now recovering partially installed data. kind of scared to play this game for the wrong reasons.

It's been fine for me. Did you start the disc after using 'suspend/resume' for a while? It can sometimes make disc access screwy/non-existent since the latest update, and usually means a rebuild after a prolonged shutdown.

Sam death in the end is bugged, many here reported that she died even if they didnt move

Reached Chapter 7 last night. It's already throwing quite a few twists at me - I have no fucking idea how
Josh did not die in the sawblade trap, and I was expecting Emily to have died when the radio tower fell into the mines, so was pretty surprised when she showed back up. So far the only character who has 'died' has been Jess, but I didn't personally see her die (she fell down the elevator shaft after being dragged out of the cabin window)
so I don't know if I can trust even that.

My earlier theory was that
Josh called everyone back to the cabin to murder them in revenge for his sisters dying, and I'm beginning to think that's right. Maybe Peter Stormare is his therapist? Or his father? EDIT - and I also think there must be multiple Psychos. From all of the ghost shit Ashley and Chris were seeing the basement I'm guessing one of the twins is still alive (Beth), unless the game really is going down a supernatural route as well as psycho-murderer. But there still must be multiple killers as Mike was following someone around the Sanatorium while shenanigans were happening back at the lodge.

Anyway, I'll try to finish it tonight if I have time. Didn't play much over the weekend but I am finding the story thoroughly engrossing.

wow, finally had time to play this game on friday. Finished it in one long sitting basically. I so hope this sells well and warrants a sequel, we need more games like this. It was just a great experience all around, and some scenes looked outright stunning.

I have 1 question though: Why didn't they turn on any lights once they're inside the cabin?

It was nigh-time and the cabin was practically in the dark the whole time during the entire game.

How long did it take you?

I've been thinking about getting this and inviting some friends over and playing it collectively with them near Halloween.

I'm not finished yet, but based on my time with the game I think it's going to be about 7-8 hours for a single playthrough (unless the final 3 chapters are much bigger). There are, I believe,
***ten***
chapters and each has taken me about 45 minutes on average. A good length of time to sit down and play one or two a night, or manageable if you want to binge and get a lot done in one sitting.
