Edge Special List: The 100 Greatest Video Games

I really like the direction of this list a lot even though I don't agree with all of it. I've been a gamer for 25+ years, but the value placed on retro games vs modern stuff is typically over inflated on all-time lists. Good job Edge

I don't agree with a lot of it, but kudos for ignoring nostalgia & not giving games points just because they were older.

Top 4/5 games released in the past several years = a bullshit greatest of all time list. Lacks contextual history and reverence for environment in which some games were originally released.

Dark Souls and Bloodborne in the top ten is interesting. I guess clunky mechanics and poor combat need love too.

This isn't about The Witcher 3. From's combat is fantastic.

Also, have people actually read the write-ups instead of just taking shots at a list that nobody will ever agree on, no matter the games in there?

2007's list (and special edition magazine) was so great I still read it every day on the john.

Bomberman?

I hope that's just a listing for the series in general because that's definitely a game where the sequels improved on the formula.

For example Bomberman II is the game that introduced battlemode, which the series is famous for.
In the Bomberman article of 2007's list they specifically state that Saturn Bomberman is the best one.

Premature usage of this gif. You blew your load too soon.

I think it's interesting how most of these lists that feature classic games typically have games that haven't necessarily aged well or are outdated compared to later titles. And then here's one that just decides to omit most classic games entirely.

If anything I think it shows how segmented the retro gaming community is from the modern gaming community. You don't see tons of people who heavily follow the latest releases scouring eBay for some sought after Sega CD game, so it's not very likely that the publications covering new releases will have played those games.

Was expecting to see the usual Nintendo guff at the top so Dark Souls at number one is a bit of a surprise.

No Suikoden 2 makes the entire list invalid.

Having beaten that game this May, no it doesn't. Great game but it's actually coming in third place for Suiko games so far.

Also: people still getting mad over lists? Why? You could fill 100 great games in a single decade. There's no way you're getting every good game across like, 25 or so years? Forget it.

I don't think it's necessarily that, I think they played games on old consoles & know them very well, they're just not giving older games extra points for being old, which happens in 95% of "best of all time" lists. So I think this list is surprisingly refreshing, even though I disagree with most of it.

Demon's Souls should be #1

With such a list their opinion on anything is a no no for me now. Two of the most overhyped and mediocre games of 2014 are on that list

I need more context to understand the intention of this list.

Consisting of 212 pages and presented with a foil embossed cover, this limited edition celebration features 100 essays on the videogames that deserve to be in your collection, from old favourites such as Tetris to modern day masterpieces such as Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain.

If it's just this I can agree with most of them.
But if it meant to be a ranked all-time Top 100 list of all videogames (like it says on the cover) it's a really weird one.
