NES or N-E-S?

I say NESS, but I refuse to call the Super Nintendo SNESS. I don't know why, it just sounds stupid to me so I always just say "Super Nintendo". I would probably call the NES, Nintendo if it wasn't the name of the company. NA here, mid 20's.

We say 'Ness' and 'S-Ness' here in France! But I pronounce it 'N-E-S' when I speak in English.

I think this can be explained by the way we pronounce the 'E', saying 'N-E-S' in French doesn't feel very natural.

Other than that, first time I hear the 'NEZ' pronunciation oO

Just because kids in one town/country called it one thing back then, doesn't mean that was global.

I've seen this discussion many times over the years, broadly while NA kids pronounced it N-E-S and Super N-E-S or S-N-E-S or even Super Nintendo, UK kids called it NEZ/NES and SNEZ respectively. Five syllables was a bit much for the playground :D

I wonder if the UK pronunciation was also helped along by popular use on our games TV shows of the time like Gamesmaster and Bad Influence.

Nez or Nintendo
Snez or Super Nintendo. Some people would say Super nez.

There's only one 's' so it's pronounced nez (like the name Les) and not ness (like the word Less).

En-ee-ess is just too much of a mouthful. Like asking for a Pee-Eye-En to access an account or talking about En-ay-ess-ay's Space Shuttle.

Say-ga Megadrive, obviously.

It's also Yosh-ee not "Yo! She". That one's just a fact from the Japanese, but it was fucked up by us Westerners.

Hard g in gif.

I go back and forth between calling it NES and pronouncing it 'ness.' On occasion I will just call it Nintendo. I always just call the SNES Super Nintendo though.

Here in Brazil is mainly "Nintendinho" ("small Nintendo") and/or "Nez". In brazilian portuguese we tend to speak acronyms as names.

Great topic!

Nez and Snez to rhyme with fez, UK. This was the way people said it when the nes was originally out in the uk too.

The first time I ever heard it spelt out N-E-S was only a few years ago when reggie mentioned it on a direct or something. Then I heard the Ess N-E-S/ Super N-E-S too lol. Sounded weird then and now

33 years old and have always pronounced them En-Ee-Ess and Ess-En-Ee-Ess.

I got bought systems close to their launch dates too way back in the day. We lived in the woods of N.H. so I didn't have a lot of friends to talk about them with, so I only read them written out in Nintendo Power and pronounced them those ways in my head.

You guys think Nufel player Tom Brady should be investigated by the Fuhbye or the Seeya for cheating? (NFL, FBI or CIA, for those of you who pronounce acronyms as words).

Also, anyone who says "yosh-ee" needs to be checked. The character says its name properly!

I think people are just getting confused by others phonetic spellings on that one. Some people pronounce Yoshi as Yow-shi, which is wrong and what I assume the original post on the matter was about.

Oh man, "regular Nintendo" is one I use sometimes. I also say "the 8-bit Nintendo" to some people. It has so many names!
Best system ever

N-E-S

I also say G-U-I instead of "gooey"...

I mean, are you seriously supposed to call a UI an "ooey"?

Pronounce NES as N-E-S.

Call the SNES the Super Nintendo.

When actually asking if someone wanted to play either of the systems, I would always just say Nintendo or Super Nintendo.

NES, would imply that its a singular word that is shortened.

N-E-S, is the proper way to shorten the multi word name, Nintendo Entertainment System.

Not really, it's an acronym. Like NATO.

Canada, N-E-S. Everyone I've ever met has said N-E-S, it's an acronym not a noun damnit.

It being an acronym is precisely why some people would prefer to pronounce it as a word.

NATO, GIF, scuba, laser and radar are examples of acronyms that are not spelled out.

N-E-S

And then Super N-E-S

Though when I was a kid I would say "Super Nintendo" and "Regular Nintendo" after the SNES came out.

Edit: I live in Florida

Famicom.

But on topic, it's N-E-S.

In Germany I remember that in magazines and among friends we used to call the SNES "Super Famicom" and were waiting for its official release. Much cooler name than SNES.

But the NES we called simply Nintendo.

Back in the days we just called it Nintendo and Super Nintendo, but currently I called the first one "Nez", calling it N-E-S should sound really odd in this country lol

Edit: I'm from Venezuela, I supose it's the same for the rest of South America
