NES or N-E-S?

Folks, I just wanted to pop in and say that the response to this has amazed me. Despite the vitriol, I'm loving the discussion over which way people have come to pronounce NES. I just want to remind everyone that if you want to be a part of the study I'm doing, I need you to respond to the Google Form. It's already up to around 150 responses from around the world! Amazing!

It's only two questions, takes about 10 seconds if you don't go long winded about it (though some of the longer winded responses have been great as well), and it'll add more linguistic data for defining the boundaries of NES production.

Thanks so much. ^_^

N-E-S and S-N-E-S, or Super Nintendo when I was younger. Shortening it seems to be a British thing. They do that for some reason, like with other disgusting words like "journo" or "noughties" (spell check even agrees on that one).

I'm worse than all of you because I'm inconsistent.

For NES I use N-E-S, but for SNES I use S-NESS. Like the S is a modifier for NES. Which doesn't make sense because I don't even say "NES."

How's that even possible when virtually every 16bit Sega game had the SEGA sound bit, right when you started the game?

The whole Seegah thing started well before the Mega Drive launched. TV ads for the Master System and SC-3000 always pronounced it as Seegah, and it caught on and just stuck. Pretty much to this day.

From the day I received my first N-E-S system, it has always been N-E-S for me. Even the Super Nintendo was known as the Super N-E-S when discussing it with my friends back in the day. "NEZ" just doesn't sound right...

I don't think I've heard anyone use a Z before instead of an S sound when using the Nes pronunciation.

I usually go with n-e-s, but I honestly can't remember the last time I said it. But I guez there's no real way to say it is really wrong, cause you know, tomato potato.

For the other system I just go with super nintendo, cause.. it's easy I guess.

America. I always referred to it as Nintendo and Super Nintendo!

HOWEVER, when looking at the acronyms NES and SNES I always pronounced it as N-E-S and S-N-E-S. I've don't think I've met anyone who has pronounced it as NES or SNES, this all seems so foreign to me.

EDIT: I don't understand how people get Sega's pronunciation incorrect. It was spoken/sung at the beginning of all of their games. Seh-ga!

Actually the speech sample wasn't used in that many games in the Gen/MD era. Certainly not the ones I've played. Outside of the mainline Sonic's I can't think of a lot (Edit: And here's the proof). Having it spoken on logo screens was fairly inconsistent before 3rd party Sega decided to have one that does say it every time.

It's been pronounced in enough games by now though to have heard at least one of them though.

Nintendo or old nintendo

I've never actually heard anyone vocalize the abbreviation when talking about the system, and when reading it I usually unconsciously convert it to nintendo in my head.

Something tells me this is the difference between people who actually grew up with the system and its games and those who picked it up post hoc via emulation.

I always said Nez (and still do).
When I was younger, I usually said Super Nintendo for the SNES with the odd time saying Snez. Now I always say Snez.
Sega = Say-gah
Mario = Marry oh

I say NES like you would say NESS (as opposed to NEZ and N-E-S).

I also say SNES the same way (as opposed to SNEZ, Super-Nez, Super Nes, S-N-E-S, and Super N-E-S).

I'm from Australia.

I'm from Spain, and where I (still) live the most typical pronunciation was:

NES: (La) Nintendo
SNES: (La) Super Nintendo (abbreviation, when we were talking about consoles: (la) super)
N64: (La) Nintendo sesentaycuatro (abbreviation, when we were talking about consoles: (la) sesentaycuatro)

It ALWAYS was this way when I was younger. Until recent years, I NEVER heard a Spanish talking about the 'NES': it always was 'la Nintendo'.

- 'Yo tengo la Master System, ¿tú cuál tienes?'
- 'La Nintendo'.
