Assassin's Creed Syndicate Review Thread

good is highly subjective, obviously. I want a dynamic world full of emergent experiences. the open world in AC games has always felt static and lifeless despite being full of stuff. they're basically fancy menus where you select your mission.
Well MGSV wasn't a very dynamic open world. It has little spots of life here and there and was completely empty everywhere else.

GerAlt-Right. Ciriously.
Starting with AC3, it seems like the ones released in odd years are good.

2009-AC2 - (great)
2010-ACB- (good and great)
2011-ACR-(not great, but not bad)
2012-AC3-bad
2013-AC4-good
2014-ACU-bad
2015-ACS-good

why do people say this? Would a game you don't like getting high scores displease you?

Numbers also aren't everything......
The other angle is that they're just happy to see the game is being received well, ergo might be a game worth playing rather than likely a piece of crap. It kind of is the real purpose of reviews, rather than being like judges on a performance in a competition.

Kinda surprised at the reviews given all the negative press this was getting pre-embargo.

Maybe I'll Ben using this after all. Or I'll stick to my original plan of hoping someone buys it for me for Christmas.

Do any of the reviews or gameplay indicate that they added ambient music to gameplay outside of missions? With a great soundtrack, that was one of my favorite things about the Ezio trilogy.

Isn't that just the same as saying 1, 2, 3, or 4?
no. the same way that 1, 2, 3, and 4 aren't directly equal to most sites' scores around 100, 75, 50 and 25.

1, 2, 3, and 4 end up being "well, I called that game a 3, and I liked this game more than that 3, but not as much as that 4.. so do I rate it up to the 4, or down to the 3.. or do I introduce now a 3.5 to account... what to do what to do..." It's inevitable and human nature probably.

By applying terms to it... You take tendencies to compare off the table.

Is it worth paying full price for? If not, is it at least worth buying on sale? If not, is it at least worth a 24 hour rental?

Even Daily Radar's old descriptions provided more value. Direct Hit is the game got pretty much everything right. Hit means you are going to enjoy it a lot. Miss means you may enjoy it, but there are problem. Dud means keep away. Again, such descriptions make it easy to put one of them on a game without worrying what you said about any other game.

Also descriptions like that conversely hold up well over time, again because they avoid comparison. When you say Mickey Mouse and the Castle of Illusion is a Direct Hit/Worth Buying, it doesn't matter if over the next 25 years games come along with better mechanics, better graphics, more value, etc. It's "must buy" score holds. Whereas with numbers, it tends to be "Well they gaev castle of illusion a 4/4, but then gave the newest Rayman 3/4 despite everything about it being better than castle of illusion"

Finally, when you use ratings, it ends up causing reviewers to want to stay away from both ends of the scale (1/5, 1/10, A/F, etc) Readers have a tendency to think the ends of the scale are perfection (either perfect good, or perfect bad). So when a site says 5/5, people complain that "this game is not perfect, how can you call it perfect". By assigning it a term "must buy", it takes the seeming absolute of math out of it and forces readers to view the rating for what it is.. a subjective opinion.

You can pretend it doesn't look worse all you want but you know they would have made it look like Unity if they could have handled it in cycle. Instead we get old, flatter lighting. And frankly I find it weak to say that fixed cycling with atmospherics like the gorgeous Unity had pull you out of a game more than an uglier step back to the Syndicate/Black Flag look

lol, the detail of Unity's static light maps is NOT happening this gen through dynamic lighting. If you think it will (and that Ubi is just lazy) you are going to be sorely disappointed. Dynamic lighting will improve, but static light maps like Unity are out of range of current gen consoles CPUs.

I can't believe how much they milked this franchise. It had all the potential to stay fresh just because of the premise, but I think releasing them so fucking often really takes its toll. that being said, the reviews are looking far better than Unity so I hope the people that are into AC still get something they won't be disappointed with.

How does the detail and density of the open world compare to the Witcher 3?

Kinda want this game just for the cool city. Thinking about making it my first Ass Creed game.

Was interested in playing this after seeing the reviews, oh look at that, Ubi has brought back their grand ol tradition of releasing pc version a month later! Just lovely. Thought they might have been turning a new leaf with Unity, guess old habits die hard?

I am guessing the question is ultimately....... would you rather have day and date, or would you rather have much less buggy?

Guess I was lucky but Unity didn't give me a ton of problems, then again I did have to upgrade my gpu to get it to run smoothly but it was kinda demanding when it was released. Can't remember what other titles in the mainline series came out same time as consoles, those didn't give me issues either, ditto with Far Cry entries.

I'll give this game a rent. Didn't play Unity, so I'll be coming off Black Flag. I wish the series could return to the glory that was AC2.

I'm glad it's reviewing well. It restored some of the confidence i had in the series. I have this game on it's way from gamefly... so i'll give it a try and see if it wins me over like some of the reviewers.

Yeah, you've made yourself very clear on the subject. AC sucks and those of us who like it are suckers. We get it.

No, Assassin's Creed 1 sucked. As did Unity. Calling AC1 the best in the series is foolish in my opinion. I loved 2, Brotherhood, 4, I'm even fond of Liberation (for some reason). But the fact of the matter is, whatever I thought of the AC games I liked, I'm just so over the series. Even a fun AC is just more AC--something that has lost all novelty with this yearly release schedule.

You can try to act like I'm some dark horse but my opinion lies firmly in the mainstream (of GAF at least). AC is tired.

Why on earth are you spending time in multiple threads about a new game in this series then? Mind boggling.

Well if buying this bring us closer to a mainline game set in Asia, then I'm in! Doesn't hurt that it's being received pretty well.

I'm more tired of the constant AC shitposting that goes on in every AC thread nowadays then I am of AC itself.

People who find the series boring and stagnant aren't allowed to express their opinion?

There's shitposts for sure but there's also a lot of valid criticism

This game got better reviews than expected and some people want to just pretend everything is fixed now and brush off any negativity

There's room in here for both praise for improvements and critique on things that still leave much to be desired

I don't think you're a dark horse. I think you're just a plain dick for making personal attacks based on taste in video games, and for shit posting.

Guy literally just came in here to say "she loves this shitty series" and then bounce

Dude, it's cool that you think your opinion "lies firmly" in the "mainstream" on GAF, but he's not calling you to task for being some kind of "dark horse" - he was pulling you out on the carpet for overtly calling someone a "fool" just for liking a game you don't. You could have left it alone but instead chose to come in here and shit up the thread a bit, and now you're being put on blast.

Sharing your opinion in a coherent manner is great. Making a one-off post that just straight up says "you're a fool" to someone expressing their opinion with absolutely no provocation is ridiculous.

You can criticize AC without insulting people who still enjoy it. Saying people are fools or have shit taste for enjoying AC is unwarranted.

I'm glad it's reviewing well, but I'm not playing Russian roulette with my $60 anymore when it comes to AC. Maaaaaaaaaan unity burned me so bad, felt like an asshole for defending it. But it'll be $40 bucks in a matter of weeks
