Assassin's Creed Syndicate Review Thread

as a reminder to anyone that cares...there are some in-game items you can get on the http://www.assassinscreed.com/rewards site...some weapon packs and outfits for Jacob and Evie (there's an Edward outfit for Jacob but you can unlock that with Uplay points anyway)...just for signing up you'll get 10K points and it only takes like 1,250 to get the DLC items so it's an easy way to get extra stuff

Outfits
Evie Nighthawk Gear Set
Jacob Suave Outfit

Weapons
Master Assassin Pack
Industrial Pack
Pirate Pack

edit: it was pointed out to me in the OT thread that it's a US only offer...sorry for not knowing that earlier

The hype is real! Don't know whether to get this on PS4 now or just wait a month and get it on PC. Probably PC.

the PC version will be more affordable with people already selling their NVIDIA codes for around $30-$35 so that will sway some people (I'm going PC as well)...plus other PC sites will have vouchers and all that to make their prices lower

Ubisoft pandering to people with these thoughts has soured the franchise for me quite a bit.

The series has lost its narrative thrust and I couldn't care less about the shit I do as an assassin because what the hell does it even matter with no future pay off.

I wish the devs could find a happy medium to satisfy both sets of fans, but hey they caved and still sell gangbusters every year.

The Desmond story is awful. They create fantastically realized historic settings with some cool characters and then go and shit it up with someone no one could care about.

Mention AC and people think Ezio, Altair, or even Connor or Kenway before they ever mention Desmond.

I'll have to get it for London - but I'll wait for a bit and check for patches and word of mouth after extended playtime. And maybe a price drop as after a number of weak entries and the buggy mess of Unity Ubi owe me a little margin.

Sheesh, those scores are all over the place.

One review says too much filler, another says great focus on the story. One review says great innovative changes bringing back the fun, Forbes says its another stale annual iteration. A guy on Gaf says "Oh hell yeah, such fun, a guy on Reddit says "Wtf? Such trash."

Such a decisive game :D

I think I'll wait to buy this next year to be safe. That way, I can play it after I finish next years game (next October). My backlog overfloweth anyways.

Edit: Screw it, I'll probably get it next month. If it's better than Unity, that's a big improvement regardless.

It's funny what expectations can do. People are pleasantly surprised at the scores this has been getting, but the meta for PS4 is currently 78%. For most AAA releases that would be seen as a pretty disappointing score. The same average as COD Ghosts, slightly lower than Watch Dogs, slightly higher than Destiny. These are games that are widely seen as disappointing but the same performance for this game is seen as good?

Put it this way, if Halo 5 gets these scores people won't be pleasantly surprised! This is what expectations can do.

Great reviews for the most part, that is refreshing. From what I gather if you like AC games then this is one of the best in years, but if you don't then this isn't likely to change your opinion too much. GameSpot's review is the biggest surprise, but I'm not sure on the reviewers affinity with the AC series.

The usual suspects handing out 9/10s casually and are collectively like "Get this game. Get this game". No thanks.

Lost count of the amount of games that are meant to be great and must-have this year.

I dont think people are really paying attention to the metacritic score, its the individual 9s and 8s for a game they expected (wanted?) to get 5s and 6s. If Halo gets 9s and 8s from some publications and 5s and 6s from others, I suspect this will be a very different thread where the focus is on the 5s and 6s being clickbait or unfair.

I would buy it if the PC release was tomorrow. But not next month in the middle of a ton of other games

oh well

Same. It's a shame they couldn't get it out with console releases

Now would be perfect as I could finish it in the 3 weeks left before Fallout but there's no chance I'll have time for it once I'm playing Fallout and Battlefront

Actually surprised with the good scores. The videos I've seen really don't make it seem that good or anything. Maybe it has a lot of heart or something when you really get into it.

FYI if they are reviews there were a ton of requests on stuff to NOT show. Might be why.

It already looks better than Unity for me. Good.

Now can we get the next one to be set in feudal Japan please? They've got to do that one before they inevitably run this franchise into to the ground.

Unity felt like the game was struggling to barely keep the game in a playable state at all time. From the controls, to the animations and the framerate, the game just felt super loose and janky. The character never felt like one with the world.

The Giant Bomb QL makes everything seem pretty solid and cohesive. The combat also seems a lot snappier and more responsive.

The combat is indeed more responsive. It was one of Ubi's plans. and it pays off.

The gamut of scores is strange, but I'm currently watching the GB quicklook and this looks really cool. Will check it out on a sale, which based on previous UBI games, shouldn't take long at all.

About the ridiculous app stuff in Unity: that doesn't exist anymore. Was patched out awhile ago. It was one of the worst design decisions I've come across in recent memory and deserved to be blasted into outer space, granted.

In case you're serious and don't actually understand how to read a Kotaku review:
kgqalqfqplxsbxpeg589.gif

They rearranged the box, but it's all still the same.

i know how you read most of it :p

check mark = pros
x = cons
gray box with ? = ?

the only gray in your gif is for "should you play this game? not yet" which doesn't correlate with "the best entry in years..." anyhow i get the gist of the review. its positive.

As a note to everyone, while we've been mulling it for a while, we're now banning for complaining that different reviewers at the same site have different opinions.

This is a good thing. This thread got pretty heavy on the vitriol very quick....is there something in the water today?

How come none of these reviews are comparing differences between platforms performance wise, (even if slightly), like they used to?

We have to wait for a DF comparison now for anything at all?

They do not even mention specific platforms. It was a huge thing last gen, and the beginning of this one.

I think it's past that. We already know what platform is always going to have the best looking and running version of 3rd party games. It will always be the ps4.

Cue PC crowd hue hue hue

So all the modern day stuff is just cuts scenes this time around, but with a little more attention? Kinda lame, but considering that Desmond has been dead for several games, they can't seemingly come up with a new character we can all connect with. Still, I hope the modern day stuff has a bit more focus.

Definitely not with last years debacle with the game, etc, and how it ran on each system. It is more important to point out the differences with their second attempt with their new engine to see how/if it has improved, IMO.
