SCE Executive Vice President: Possible enhanced version PS4, no first party for Vita

My guess would be a high performance Ps4 to better handle VR games.

I think this is 100% correct. The only reason I could see them entertaining something that risky is if they are unhappy in testing with VR experience the current PS4 gives and feel that they need a more powerful system for a better VR experience.

I don't want any first party stuff from Sony anyway, most of their -alive- franchises are not that interesting. Just continue to pay 3rd parties to support the system. I'm ok with working ports like RE:R2 or XCOM.

I wonder if the high performance PS4 will just brute force 1080p30 games to 1080p60. I don't think it can work like that though.

Maybe he meant better battery for the DS4, larger SSD storage, more power efficient, and 4k support for blu Rays only, not gaming and something that can handle VR better.

While splitting your base is typically a bad idea (and Sony knows it), this idea could get some traction IF the VR thing takes off. Essentially, if they find a fair amount of interest in VR, but run into technical limitation (as many have suggested they will), it could be to their benefit to produce a "high performance" PS4 in order to support enhanced VR experiences. That having been said, that is a lot of "ifs".

RIP 10 year cycle. Vita means Death.

People would bitch about a mid-cycle home console upgrade but I bet they still buy it. Both Sony and MS should maybe consider it, their systems weren't really bleeding edge anyway this gen. Sony probably needs it for PSVR to be at all competitive with PC based VR solutions too.

It's also been speculated Nintendo's going this route with NX mimicking a more OS based/device agnostic iOS/Android platform model. That might not be a bad way for PlayStation and Xbox to go either longterm unless they just want to jump to streaming services primarily.

Nintendo fans ate up the N3DS without much complaining, so I guess there is a market for such a thing.

I doubt they'll do it though.

PS4 is already the most powerful console ever right now. Why bother adding more power when games are running best on it?

It strikes me that the main thing holding the 4 back is the CPU - the GPU seems to do things well enough and it just seems like a smudge more CPU horsepower would be enough for 1080/60 with bells & whistles.

If they can do that without fracturing the player base - for example by encouraging devs to use settings sliders - I wouldn't have an issue.

Although PS5 would be better obvs.

I'd buy a higher spec PS4 if it means games run on both PS4 versions so I can still play with my friends and the newer/higher spec version just runs some games slightly better with better framerates and/or more details (on games that take advantage of it).

If they just mean releasing a PS4 with a larger hard drive I'll skip it.

N3DS costs significantly less than a high performance PS4 would. Not really a fair comparison.

The original was a PS3 exclusive before it moved to Vita though.

I guess the better example is Tearaway then (and that bombed worse on PS4 too X().

Still, bites that Vita exclusives are jumping ship but that's a different topic all together. Personally done with Sony (only getting a PS4 for Ratchet & Clank, KH3 and FFXV) though.

Did most people suddenly forget Apple is on a yearly cycle with the iPad that does not render the older model useless? i welcome a mid gen performance bump if handled properly

I'd happily buy a new PS4 if it has actual high-end components inside and games can utilize it.

The high performance PS4 is not going to cost more than current PS4 if it was just simply an upclock with a possible die shrink. An upclock can move the PS4 from 1.8TF to 2+TF from the same APU at no cost increase but a possible decrease in cost.

Who's to say how well a PlayStation 4.5 would do. It would confuse the average consumer tho, just like how the average consumer think the Wii-U is just an upgraded Wii. Also just like the Xbox One with Kinect and the Xbox One by itself, the average consumer would just choose the cheaper version. "They're the same thing basically right, just this one is cheaper?"

Developers make console games for closed specs.
You basically want a PS4 with faster menus.

maaaan, their Vita management was really poor, imho. even if it's understandable. the main issue is that is really putting heavy shadows on a possible new hardware in that segment (and not, I'm not happy about this. at all).

Pay more for more perfomance on single player games, and make multiplayer games run equally on both consoles.

Options are welcome, and this can be done well without splitting the user base.

That still doesn't make sense. You've already had your chance to play the game on PS Vita. Nobody is buying Vita for Tearaway, not in droves anyway so what does it matter that PS4 owners get to play the game now?

Eh I dunno man, I thought Gravity Rush was a fantastic original IP

You can handle it, but can the mass market at large without being completely confuzzled?

Hmm releasing a PS4 with more horsepower would be awkward, games would have to scale for both... Unless it's like New 3DS and it gets exclusive games, but we all know that really isn't a good move. Especially considering where the PS4 currently stands in it's lifespan. If they make it easily scalable, that would be cool. But I can see some current PS4 owners getting upset over that. :I

Couldn't care less about first party Vita support. Just keep helping third parties and Indies to get on the platform.

Rigt now the Vita could be my favorite platform of all time. There are so many great indie games that are simply awesome in portable form.

I loved the game on Vita, so I played it and had a blast with it :).

Just bites that games that are home to Vita are being yanked away from it, that's all.

Again, different topic for a different discussion, so I will drop it.

Sorry for de-railing the thread guys.

PS4.5 would just be confusing to market, Let alone sell, Especially when people are still in the mindset the X1 still doesnt support used games lol. The internet would be wise to it but the general public wouldn't.

Surely they know of the WiiU fiasco.

Trainwreck waiting to happen that would be.

A higher performance PS4? I buy a console for it to last till the next main hardware launch....not to see it get a boost alah the New Nintendo 3DS bullshit. If they want to release incremental hardware, I might as well just start upgrading my computer more.....because I won't be upgrading a console.

Handhelds have a long history of mid/late cycle architecture upgrades though going back to the late 90s. GBC, NGPC, WSC, DSi, n3DS, even the PSP 2000/3000 really (doubled ram). Although consoles used to too really, it just usually came with a media add-on (FDS, TG-CD, Sega CD, 64DD, etc), although not always (32X, Saturn/N64 RAM carts).

The closest thing we've had recently are interface expansions last gen like the Wiimote Plus, Kinect and PS Move. I guess PSVR sort falls in that camp too now.

Bought a Vita a few months back - loving it so far. I think I only own something like 3 total 1st party games for it, so doesn't really bother me that 1st party support is dead.

I don't understand the distinction. A normal 3DS also costs significantly less than a normal PS4.

Both would be a mid-gen hardware upgrade, for a higher price.
I think Nintendo has the most die hard fanbase of the 3 manufacturers so there was little oposition and outcry for splitting the install base and making exclusives for the upgraded hardware and I would be expecting some outrage from the core PS4 install base, but overall the 3DS > N3DS transition was a very smooth one in the market imo, so maybe it's worth considering.

that's how i see things as well.
an upgraded version serves little to no purpose, unless it's a version with more ports or something only directed at us , the addicted gameers
